Haymitch spends the whole hunger games (in which he was illegally reaped) trying to discreetly defy the Capitol. He figures he'll die anyway, so he's mourning never seeing his family or girlfriend but is relieved that they won't be killed for his actions

He wins against all odds, and when he finally gets let home after a week of being locked in a cage in parties in the Capitol, he finds his house with his mom and brother "accidentally" caught on fire, and they didn't make it. In that week, President Snow stuffed him with bread and milk to make him immune to poison. Before being reaped, Haymitch gave his girlfriend a bag of assorted colored gumdrops. When he got back, she had another bag of all red gumdrops. She'd been in prison and starved, and as soon as Haymitch realized that the gumdrops were from Snow, she swallowed and ended up dying in his arms. That's why he's an alcoholic in the original series, but it's just the sadness but almost poeticness of the character deaths
