Question

Do we know if Bondsmiths can have shardplate and shardblades? Like wielding their spren as the blade? The reason I’d like to know is I’m planing to kitbash some 3D printed Shardbearer miniature together to make one Radiant Shardbearer for each order. And I know the, wait, spoiler:

Spoiler

I know the Stormfather specifically said Dalinar would be a Radiant without Shards,

but is that true for other Bondsmiths? I’m thinking if shardblades aren’t typical for a Bondsmith I can just put a battle hammer in its place. Also, as for the Stickmongers, (a meme-joke order of Knight Radiant based on Shallan’s interaction with a stick while trying to Soulcast it) what do you guys think the shardplate should look like on them? I’m thinkin matte white, with some basic brown stick patterns painted randomly around the armor. As for the shardblade on the Stickmonger, I’m think I’m just going to go with plain brown, like a stick, for the whole thing.

Bondsmiths do not generally have Shardblades - they might have Plate (Their plate spren are believed to be Gloryspren) but that is not canon or confirmed.

The Plate spren for A and 3-9 are canonical, and the deck can be cited in the Coppermind as confirmation for those orders.

The Skybreaker Plate spren are canonically confirmed to be mandras/luckspren. While I was working on the deck I was under the impression that gravitationspren were the same thing, but I art directed these cards over a year ago at this point, and don't recall where I got that impression. Continuity was totally slammed with WaT at the time, and the explanatory card did not go through their department. In the absence of confirmation from a more definitive source, you can cite mandras/luckspren as the Skybreaker plate spren and treat the 2 card art as an example of an official depiction of mandras/luckspren, but do NOT make any assumptions about whether or not gravitationspren are the same thing based on the explanatory card.

As for the question of whether Bondsmiths can have Radiant Plate, which came up previously, I am not privy to any more information than you guys. Gloryspren were included so that we could have something on the 10 card, and chosen solely because of their significance in the Oathbringer sanderlanche and [WaT] the scene where Dalinar opens the perpendicularity to the Spiritual Realm.  No conclusions about the question of Bondsmith Plate should be drawn based on their inclusion here. No canon, just vibes.

Questioner

And there's one last question if I may: I'm really into swords and such. I couldn't help but notice king Elhokar's Blade. It's just... All the others are ornamented, and they may have some glyphs, but it is the only one where it is explicitly it is told that there are ten fundamental glyphs on it which are the glyphs of the orders. I read some of the chapters from Dalinar from Unfettered II, and I know how he got it for Elhokar. Is there also some more backstory to this Blade?

Brandon Sanderson

There's a backstory to every Blade and every one of them is special, that's the problem. But I will be exploring the origins of some of the Blades. Eventually. Not a ton, but a little bit.

Questioner

As it is ornamented in such a way... Could it be related to a Bondsmith?

Brandon Sanderson

Bondsmiths didn't have Blades.

Questioner

All of them? It's just... Maybe it was just the Stormfather...

Brandon Sanderson

No. That's a really good guess. Really good guess. I'm gonna RAFO Bondsmiths because you gonna learn a lot about them in the next book because it's the Bondsmith's book. That's a really good theory, but it's not true.

Questioner

But maybe there is at least something to it.

Brandon Sanderson

But there's a reason to it, why it has all the 10 orders.

Can other Bondsmith spren become Blades for their Bondsmith? And how would it affect the Tower if the Sibling became a Blade?

Brandon Sanderson

I'm gonna say it's outside the realm of plausibility for the Sibling right now. Is it possible for the other two, yes. It's possible but implausible. Highly implausible for the Sibling.

It is also theorized that each Bondsmith would have different Platespren, in which case if Gloryspren were Bondsmith Platespren - it may only be for Stormfather's Bondsmith, and the other two would have different platespren.

Hope that helps.
