I have been thinking about Groot from Marvel and was curious what powers would best replicate the big guy.

Musts would be having armor made from bark and having weapons that can be grown.

I have 2 possible ones in my mind which are progression and verdant aether.

Do you need to have seeds to use progression? Or already have the plant material on you?

Can verdant aether shape the vines that it grows to act as a thick barklike hide?

My current view is that the aetherbound would likely have more control and an easier time at this but progression does a lot of nifty stuff too. I know it can grow vines but I believe those were more Lifts spren manifesting in the physical realm right?  To really grown and control how something grows would require the seeds or starts of a plant right?

According to the WoR Lift Interlude, progression requires plant matter to grow, but does include an unknown amount of influence in how it grows:

“You do all the complainin’ too,” she said. “How do we get through this?”

“You have the seeds?”

<snip>

She did so, throwing the handful of seeds at the window.

“Your bond to me grants two primary classes of ability,” Wyndle said. “The first, manipulation of friction, you’ve already—don’t yawn at me!—discovered. We have been using that well for many weeks now, and it is time for you to learn the second, the power of Growth. You aren’t ready for what was once known as Regrowth, the healing of—”

Lift pressed her hand against the seeds, then summoned her awesomeness.

She wasn’t sure how she did it. She just did. It had started right around when Wyndle had first appeared.

He hadn’t talked then. She kind of missed those days.

Her hand glowed faintly with white light, like vapor coming off the skin. The seeds that saw the light started to grow. Fast. Vines burst from the seeds and wormed into the cracks between the window and its frame.

The vines grew at her will, making constricted, straining sounds. The glass cracked, then the window frame popped open.

Lift grinned.

Likewise, Tress  (once she realized the Luhel Bond) found some control over how Verdant Spores grow so it is reasonable that Aetherbound would have even more practice and control if using a Verdant Bud. Tress Ch 44:

In that moment, the last vestiges of Tress’s spore fear died away. She’d made a mistake, and she would be careful in future experiments. But today, her mistake had merely cost her a little dignity—traded away for the pleasure of knowing what it felt like to be a grape trellis.

“In my bag,” Tress said, still chuckling. “Fetch me the silver knife.”

As Huck scrambled to obey, Tress noticed the ends of the vines were still growing. As before, when she thought about them, they turned toward her. In this particular case, she didn’t want them to constrict her further, and so she thought of them pulling away. Remarkably, they did.

It wasn’t perfect control. Plus, she couldn’t do anything about the already grown vines and had to use the knife to cut herself free. But it left her wondering how far her control could go.

Hope that helps
