“I refuse to believe that.”

He wasn’t acknowledged.

“I’m sorry.”

Dolly met his eyes. The spark in hers was gone, replaced by a grim determination. “Sorry enough to help me get out?”

“Dolly.. there’s so much at stake… even if I want to I don’t think I… we’ll see. But I can’t say yes now.”

“Didn’t think so.”

“We are in our right to do our actions.”

“They moved me and my wife out.”

“I’m not saying we’re not. I’m saying the public might not feel the same way as we do.”

“I’m sorry.” He took her to do more tests that compared her to Sari.

“Which can’t be much. There would be panic and riots if they knew how we got our ‘volunteers’”

She does them half-heartedly. Once she mumbled something about sample sizes, the downfalls of matched-pairs experiments, and statistical inference. She didn’t sound like she cared anymore.

It isn’t him. It can’t be him.

What if it’s him?

Seeming to find validity in what she said, they made two more clones from her blood. Ben kept his face carefully neutral, though some sadness crept into his eyes.

“Legally, they all are.”

“Legally? Yes. Morally? Ethically? Hardly. Each and everyone of them were tricked. Or were lead here under false pretences.”

He was not responded to. Apparently insubordination was not an idea here.

Dolly named them Darla and Ally, respectively. They actually seemed to cheer her the tiniest bit.

”You said I can…socialize if I behave. I’m behaving. Or was that a lie, too?” What if they’ve never lied?

Once it was done the clones were all separated and Dolly was taken to the courtyard.

She ran into the sunlight before even looking around for other people. Tilting her chin, she felt his welcoming rays on her face and smiled her truest smile.

“Hey,” she whispered. “I’ve missed you. You miss me?”

In her heart, she felt that his warmth was a promise that he had.

”Tell Dad I’m okay. And keep Bell warm for me.”

After another minute, she turned her gaze back to the earth, looking around for anyone who looked the way she felt.

Dolly smiled back hesitantly. It could be a trap. It could be more of their lies.

Does it matter? I wasn’t made to be alone.

”Hi.”
