DoctaDajman Posted March 6, 2025 Posted March 6, 2025 (edited) I love combining magics. This one is going to look at awakening and F steel (bonus A bendalloy thought). We know that an awakened cloth can react to the speed of an arrow at least... and I know this is not the same mechanic but we see a vine able to catch a bullet. I say that simply to illustrate how fast certain magics are able to move and react. I imagine the spore sees similarly to awakened objects. Maybe not though, if needing to default we know for a fact that the awakening can react to good traditional archery equipment. But what of awakening while the user is tapping speed? I assume the biggest benefit here is being able to visualize and verbalize commands far faster than a traditional awakener. But what does that mean beyond that? If I command a rope to act as my hands and grab what I want them too, but I am moving at 4x normal human speed, do those ropes move like slugs to me or do they maintain the speed I am currently at assuming the material doesn't get destroyed in the process? Likewise, if I awaken something while my speed is tapped will that rope maintain that original speed because that is what my hands were working at when I spoke the command? Bonus... for someone with the 9th heightening or above who can awaken at a range... will it cross through a bendalloy bubble? Edited March 6, 2025 by DoctaDajman
Duxredux he/him Posted March 7, 2025 Posted March 7, 2025 (edited) Okay, let's break these down. There are presumably natural limits on the speed and power output of Awakened objects. For example, there isn't a particularly meaningful reason to have ropes acting as siege engines limit their output. The Law of BioChromatic Parallelism indicates that it isn't the number of Breaths that determine the strength of an Awakened object, as a handkerchief cut in the shape of square will require more Breaths to Awaken than one cut in the shape of a person, but will perform the same function once Awakened. I assume that this is a generalized statement, and does not include extreme cases like Nightblood. In other words, Breath count doesn't seem to significantly affect the function of the Awakened object. Tapping Speed during the act of Awakening will let you rapidly modify whatever loadout you are currently using for Awakening in addition making it difficult or impossible for opponents to hear what Commands you are using. Unless you are consciously or subconsciously limiting the output of the Awakened object and tapping Speed lets you remove that reduction, I don't see why tapping Speed would make the Breaths move the object any faster. Pretty sure you can't Command a stick to yeet someone at Mach 1 and have it work, even if you ask nicely or can run that fast yourself. What tapping Speed will let you do after you have Awakened your objects is capitalize on the strength enhancement Awakened clothing gives you at the top speed of the clothing. As noted, Awakened objects can move significantly faster than unenhanced humans. This will let you more seamlessly encorporate the enhancement into your own accelerated movement so long as you don't exceed the Awakened clothes. As for the Bendalloy question, if you're asking if mental or verbal Awakening will cross a speed bubble, I'm guessing either no or not significantly. Coinshot Steel lines and emotional Allomancy are disrupted by speed bubbles, and those operate by Spiritual Realm Connection and Cognitive broadcasting respectively, which seems at least in the same ballpark as ranged Awakening. Even if the mental Commands could do what Allomancy can't, the Breath would still have to pass through the boundary of the bubble and through normal time to the target. It wouldn't surprise me if the Awakener was too powerful and tried to force it, they would just pop the bubble and dump themselves into normal time. Edited March 7, 2025 by Duxredux 1

I think this is where my head was at more than anything. I am tapping 10x normal speed and I want to grab something on the other side of the room... if I awaken a rope with a specific mental imagery and command to act as my arms and hands and grab that thing, will it happen slower than normal? Part of your response seems like all awakened objects already move far faster than the humans could who are awakening them. I believe that they can move quick but I am just trying to picture in my own mind if ever the Steel ferring could outrun and get tripped up in his own rope that was awakened to act as a part of him while he was tapping the amount of speed that he is moving at? Does the Breath and the command recognize time and his need for hand eye coordination in the time dilation he is working at when the command is given or does it work and recognize his time at all times? Or do you suppose that the rope used grab that thing moves the same speed regardless of the awakener who is asking it to act as a part of themselves? 1
