Really was wishing for some gold compounding skills this week and then thought of how unfortunate it would be to get so cocky with that power set... I imagine myself getting happy to face tank everything and then end up allowing nightblood to nick me... oof.

For this one please assume Miles has full metalminds ready to be tapped and burned, implanted and hidden in every extremity including his head.

I mean...

A shardblade wound to the spine will kill him (I think) so a blade just has to get a good strike.

I should probably have left these in the first post.

Questioner

If a Shardblade was put through Wayne's eye, would he able to use his ability to heal the wound?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, he should be able to heal that.

Oathbringer Leeds signing (Dec. 1, 2017)

Wayne's eye and head should be in the same realm as a shardblade to the spine.

Spoiler

Questioner

Could a bloodmaker heal a Shardblade wound?

Brandon Sanderson

Could a...whatmaker? Oh, could a bloodmaker heal a Shardblade wound? Um, yes, yes they could. So, what...so, yes, this is possible. (Long pause) Is it possible? I haven't actually thought about it. I have to work through the mechanics of the magics. Jury's out. Jury's out. I've gotta go and look at the actual mechanics, so I'm gonna "jury's out" on that one. That's a read and find out as, you would think I'd figured that one out, because I'm planning for the conflicts but I haven't, like... So what's happening with the healing on Roshar is that they are using Stormlight to bridge the severed soul and glue it back together, right. So, the magic of bloodmaking is different to an extent, in that it is prompting healing directly from the body, right... I'm gonna go with yes, until I look at it but, jury's out.

I guess this one where he went back and forth was before the Wayne one. I dont think that the shardblade severing the spine is going to really do a ton other than slowing them down and using resources.

How many times could Miles heal through it?  I dont know.  At least 10x more than Wayne would be my guess. Would that be enough to allow Miles to make it through the shardbearers defenses?  Bullets or knives through the eye slots?

  1. Plate+Blade vs Miles
    • Plate and Blade is faster, stronger, more agile (Plate improves dexterity), and has faster reflexes (ditto). Offensively, they need single good strike to the spine, and they can grab miles to hold him mostly still.
    • Miles has healing, some guns (that won't penetrate the plate) and maybe few sticks of dynamite.
    • I'd say Plate and Blade takes the day, they are all around superior.
  2. Plate vs Miles
    • As Above, but know the way to defeat Miles is to grab him and rip him apart (easy to do with Plate strength).
    • I'd still say Plate wins, but it is tougher.
  3. Blade vs Miles
    • Miles wins, shooting Blade wielder from distance.

I don't think those WoBs are consistent with what we see in Stormlight, there Radiants (and Fused) get killed with Shardblade to the spine or head pretty regularly, and Radiant/Fused healing is explicitly the same as what Bloodmakers do, only with pure Investiture fueling it. I.e. it is basically the same as what Compounder can do.

As a Bloodmaker ages, what keeps them from healing the damage and carrying on as a very old, but very healthy person? Do they come to a point where they can't store enough health to stave off the aches, pains, diseases, and other things that come with old age?

This makes sense for traditional Feruchemy as it is end-neutral, so storing health becomes a zero sum game - eventually, you're going to get sick and you're not going to be able to overcome it with your natural healing ability no matter how much you manipulate it with a goldmind.

...Unless you've got a supply of Identity-less goldminds lying around. Would a Bloodmaker with a sufficient source of Identity-less goldminds (or the ability to compound, thus bypassing the end-neutral part of Feruchemy) eventually just die from being too old?

Brandon Sanderson

Basically, yes. They can heal their body to match their spiritual ideal, but some things (like some genetic diseases, and age-related illnesses) are seen as part of the ideal. Depends on several factors.

Questioner

I notice that Stormlight seems to be a bit volatile in how well it heals or who it heals. Because it seems like Renarin's eyesight would have been a long term problem, kinda like Rysn's legs maybe and Lopen's arm. But Lopen's arm got healed, Rysn's legs didn't and Kaladin's scars didn't. So I didn't know if there was a reason for those things.

Brandon Sanderson

So Stormlight healing, there's a couple things that have to be considered. But in reference to what you're saying, the person's perception of themselves is a huge part of it.  The way healing works in the cosmere is, you've got the three versions of yourself. You've got your Physical version, your Cognitive version, and your Spiritual version, And a lot of Stormlight is taking your Physical version and matching it to the Spiritual version which is your ideal self.  But it has to be filtered through the lens of your mind, and things like this.

I almost always--probably should say always--am using it to reinforce some sort of character attribute. The fact that Lopen never saw himself, even though he only had one arm, as being disabled, as a big influence, versus whether Kaladin feels deserves his brands or not. Does that makes sense?  And those are two very different things that influence how the healing works. And you will see that as a metaphor and theme, if you watch what heals and what doesn't.

Orem signing (March 10, 2018)

So per these Bloodmakers heal body to match spiritual ideal, and so do Knight Radiants with Stormlight. Since Radiants/Fused can get killed by Blade to head/spine, so must a Bloodmaker/Compounder, for consistency. Which makes sense, since Shardblade severs the soul from body, and then body has no Spiritual template to heal to.

Alternatively, Metalmind has to be attached to the body to provide Investiture, so cutting Miles in half severs him from those Metalminds.  In that case, all Plate wearer has to do is grab Miles, and start ripping him into pieces.

1. Miles blows the plate with dynamite, tanks the blade, and then just shoots the other guy

2. Same as 1, but Miles doesn't need to tank the blade

3. Miles just shoots him

Miles is good at fighting and healing, but I don't think he'd be able to beat shard plate. All they would have to do would be to grab him and it's over (even if it takes a while.) Plus Shard plate gives you enhanced speed and reflexes, which should make it really hard for miles to get away.

The only situation he has a chance in is a against a blade, assuming he has guns and he's far enough away. But you could use the blade to block bullets, so it'd be close.
