He nodded. “Same thing.”

The man shrugged. “We just walk out of the fog.”

Aelorin whispered. “I fear there may be no going back.”

“Feeling emotions can’t be that bad, right?” Her voice cracked.

"Oh Agony... I have a boyfriend who must be worried sick..."

Really want shardplate eh?

Well yes, but I think Cole is horrified at the murders he committed under the control of Madness, and the desire for lightness are a result of his former powers.

The armor sends confusion, but melds into that shape, turning into a light, silvery armor of deceptively thin plates.

Cole picks up his armor, hearing that they’ll need to leave. He takes the rest of the rock, too, figuring that someone will likely have use for it.

He shook his head. “Depends on the emotion.”

Ison walked up beside Aelorin. "Do you happen to know a man named Gurwarp? He owes me an explanation. He said he was going to a place called the Thread?"

He shook his head.

"Huh. What qualifies as "modern"?"

"It'll be a bit hard to explain. Smart phones, which are tools that store all of human knowledge, and let you communicate with anyone from anywhere instantly. Skyscrapers, which are metal houses that stretch into the sky. Airplanes, which let humans fly through sky and go around the world in hours."

"All of human-! . . . I think I want a smart phone."

She shook her head. "Anyway, my point is: how do you know your world is truly modern? What if there's a more advance civilization that you don't know about? Wouldn't they be the most modern?"

"It's the most modern world here. Anything else is speculation."

"Exactly. Here. What about other places? You're not on your homeworld anymore, Jakob."

"Who knows. Are we sure other world beyond those here even exist? We'll never know. And anyway, when I say modern, I mean in comparison to everything else here. Nothing objective about modern, unlike physics."

“Nearly there. We will need to have you meet with one of the Witches.”

The fog ended some 50 feet in front of them.

"...Witches?"

"Have you heard of multiverse theory?"

“They know most how to use the Threadstone.”

She looked scared. The man realized she couldn’t have been older than 18.

"Course I have. Just because there's more than one world doesn't mean there's infinite though."

He spoke reassuringly. “Sorry. They aren’t actual witches, that’s just what people call them. All that name means is that - like you - they were chosen by Threadstone.”
