Do we have a tech level? I assume I cannot do any Rebus-style shenanigans, but I would like to know if we want things like energy weapons, FTL, force fields, human-level AI, and other advanced technologies.

The important decision is whether we want FTL to work; the others mostly establish tone unless you apply very rigorous science, then most of them become very potent.

Basically you ignore some of the most important laws of physics and pretend you aren’t potentially causing time paradoxes, so you can have your character go to more then three star systems in their lifetimes without dying of old age. 
There are some plausible ways to do it, or you can just pretend it works somehow and call it a day.
