Perhaps this is why my gaze did not Still Rust.

She nods. “If you can describe what a soul is, I would be very interested. It’s likely a substance intrinsic to your species; we may know of it non-biologically.”

Adtae hesitated.

When my people were made, along with my world, we were each given a charge of Andarik to give us life. And then, no person died. But then… the sickness hit. It tore through our souls, made us lose Andarik, leak it into what was previously the Overflow. And so, a few of use were blessed. Not me, though. They were blessed to be a well of Andarik, the energy spilling out to others and sustaining them. But then… I died. I was exiled for thievery. And without the presence of the Andarik, I died. This started wars, and soon, all of the Blessed died out. They were murdered, and their wells of Andarik spilled out into the Overflow. Sometimes their souls claimed their power, sometimes others did. But it was irrelevant. For the power did not discriminate, and with this great charge of power, the Demons, and the Angels, were born. Each had near infinite access to Andarik, but none of them had the special circumstances that surrounded my death. So I, though with less Andarik, was able to keep them in check. I cannot banish them, but I can block them, for a time. Prevent them from accessing their powers. I have this in place for many of them, but it requires my constant attention.

He paused. That didn’t answer your question, did it? I cannot really describe it very well.

She shrugs. “It doesn’t answer my question, but it’s useful information nonetheless. You say you were made?” She turns to a technician. “Do we have a tesla coil around somewhere?”

Spoiler

Ah crap

I have to remember how a Tesla coil works…

as in, I have to figure it out.

all I really know is it zappy zaps things

Adtae waited.

Yeah, pretty much. It builds up a charge around it, which then grounds through the air when it gets too much.

The technician comes back with a small table, then sets it up and places a device on it. There’s a base with a cord and two metal spires, on with a ball on the end. “I would not get too near, unless you’re certain this is Andarik.” Dr. Warren cautions. “The light this device makes is rather dangerous.” She turns it on, and a small arc of electricity snaps between the two spires with a buzz, changing shape rapidly.

Adtae steps towards it, heedless of the danger. One of the arcs hits him, but it appears that was coincidence - it isn’t affected at all by him, and just passes through him.

Dr. Warren is shocked (no pun intended). “You said you were incorporeal, but if you’re unaffected by electromagnetism, what are you made of?”

The Andarik. Condensed into a hollow, broken shell.

As the pure Andarik flows through this shell, I can grab some of it. Force it to my will. He extended a hand, and a shadowy dagger appeared in it, next to his shadow writing.

“May I examine that?”

He handed the dagger over.

It… felt strange. There was no light reflecting off of it, and it almost felt like it sunk into her flesh.

If she had an Andarik soul, it would feel slightly different. ;)

Confident her gloves will prevent electrocution, she passes the dagger through the tesla coil induced lightning.

I seem to have bolted things by accident. Do you want to play-by-play the experiments, or shall I summarize the tests and only roleplay important actions.

Somewhat disappointed, she tries to pass the dagger through the table.

Depends on how many actions there are. If there are a heck of a lot, I’d like a play by play.

It passes through cleanly.

It did.

Over the next hour or so, Dr. Warren has Adtae try creating shadow in different light conditions (infrared, ultraviolet, various light sources), tests the tensile strength and other physical properties of shadow, and interview Adtae more. She follows up on any interesting discoveries and is willing to answer any questions he has.

Adtae is surprised to find that the light doesn’t seem to block his Andarik shadows. He explains, though, that it must be because this world does not have the Andarik.

The Andarik does not break, and seems to overlap slightly with everything it touches. When it gets near Adtae, that overlap stops.

For a brief moment the fact that light from Adtae’s sun prevents formation of shadows makes perfect sense, explaining where the energy comes from. Then Dr. Warren thinks about it too much and is bewildered again.
She also makes Adtae create a paper-thing shadow, then tries to use the overlap to pass it through things, and attempts to bend it.

It can neither bend nor pass through things.

A technician does measurements on the overlap as Dr. Warren continues talking to Adtae. She’s still unable to quite grasp how the powers work (because they defy the laws of physics), so she’s mainly asking about what they can do. “Have you ever seen your shadows shatter? They seem unbreakable.”
