Chirolina she/her Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 Maybe this has been discussed before, so feel free to point me to the right topics if I missed them! I just finished my reread of RoW and am working my way through the chapters of WaT, so if the answers to my questions are in the released chapters please RAFO me LOL Kaladin - do we have theories on why his eyes were Spoiler glowing "yellow/gold/red" when he was grieving Teft? Wit - The very last chapter of RoW, when that weird thing happened with Odium, I could have SWORN something similar happened in one of the secret project books, but I can't remember, and it's bugging me!!! Spoiler Where he's like having a train of thought.....something happens with Taravangian/Odium...and then his memory like resets and he repeats himself? I felt so familiar but I can't put my finger on it. What happened there??

Probably something about how Odium may or may not have been prepping him as his champion since Dalinar refused him. He is angry about it when he talks with Dalinar, and it drives towards the date of the duel being set. 1 hour ago, Chirolina said: Wit - The very last chapter of RoW, when that weird thing happened with Odium, I could have SWORN something similar happened in one of the secret project books, but I can't remember, and it's bugging me!!! I felt so familiar but I can't put my finger on it. What happened there? Odium messed with his Breaths, removing memories. The Father Machine tried to steal his Investiture and Hoid locked up because he had prepared in case anyone else did what Odium did. 2

WoBs: Spoiler Quote Questioner Kaladin's fight with the [Pursuer], his eyes are described glowing a color not quite the same as usual for corrupted Investiture. Is this supposed to be that he's burning a different Light? Brandon Sanderson No, it’s more he's on the border of some dangerous stuff. Dragonsteel Mini-Con 2021 (Nov. 22, 2021) Quote Questioner Is such a motif present in any other books? I think I see it in Stormlight. Brandon Sanderson Yeah, in Stormlight you can see it. So, Ruin is a red-gold... not Ruin, Odium. Odium is a red-gold. Honor is a blue-white and Cultivation is green, obviously. So, those motifs stay, when you... when you see a red or a gold, it's a reddish gold sort of thing, either of those colors, it's going to be Odium. Questioner Even when we something we might suspect to be outside influence in other worlds? Brandon Sanderson Not necessarily, because red can also mean corrupted Investiture in the Cosmere. So, I would call Odium's real color gold, because you're going to see red when Odium is corrupting other things, so... Answered above, but possibly the similar thing you are recalling is Warbreaker? (Spoilers): Spoiler Ch 49: Quote As they reached the mansions, Vasher paused on the street, setting the girl down. “Child,” he said. “I’m going to say some words to you. I want you to repeat them. Repeat them, and mean them.” The girl regarded him absently, nodding slightly. He glanced at Vivenna. “Back away.” She opened her mouth to object, but thought better of it. She stepped back out of earshot. Fortunately, Vasher was near a lit streetlamp, so she could see him well. He spoke to the little girl, and she spoke back to him. After opening the cage, Vivenna had taken the Breath back from the thread. She hadn’t stowed it somewhere else. And, with the extra awareness she had, she thought she saw something. The girl’s BioChromatic aura—the normal one that all people had—flickered just slightly. It was faint. Yet with the first Heightening, Vivenna could have sworn she saw it. But Denth told me it was all or nothing, she thought. You have to give away all the Breath you hold. And you certainly can’t give away part of a breath. Denth, it had been proven in other instances, was also a liar. Vasher stood, the girl climbing back into his arms. Vivenna walked up and was surprised to hear the girl talking. “Where’s Daddy?” she asked. Vasher didn’t reply. “I’m dirty,” the girl said, looking down. “Mommy doesn’t like it when I get dirty. The dress is dirty too.” Vasher began walking. Vivenna hurriedly caught up. “Are we going home?” the girl asked. “Where have we been? It’s late, and I shouldn’t be out. Who’s that woman?” She doesn’t remember, Vivenna realized. Doesn’t remember where she’s been…probably doesn’t remember anything of the entire experience. So Misel went from near catatonia with trauma to no recollections because Vasher coached her into storing the memories. Ch 57 Quote “You were a good person,” Vasher whispered. “That man saw and did terrible things,” Denth said. “I’ve tried, Vasher. I’ve tried going back. But the darkness…it’s inside. I can’t escape it. My laughter has an edge to it. I can’t forget.” “I can make you,” Vasher said. “I know the Commands.” Denth froze. “I promise,” Vasher said. “I will take it all from you, if you wish.” Denth stood for a long moment, foot on Vasher’s arm, sword lowered. Then, finally, he shook his head. “No. I don’t deserve that. Neither of us do. Goodbye, Vasher.” Denth turns down learning the Commands to store memory in Breath. Hope that helps 4
Sliverlight Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 What this reminds me of is how Autonomy Spoiler In the form of Trell is able to take control of the mad This could be the case here; Kaladin's Spirit Web is opening up so that new Investiture in the form of Voidlight can infuse his Spirit Web. 1
Light In the Darkness Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 6 hours ago, j0dd said: Kaladin's Spirit Web is opening up so that new Investiture in the form of Voidlight can infuse his Spirit Web. Yup. He's in a very passionate moment, which is Odium's whole thing, and he's in the corrupted tower, doing things out of passion (at the core) instead of to protect/out of honor. So his connection to Odium was very strong for a minute there, likely nearly allowing him to Voidbind - Odium's version of Surgebinding. Given the results of that on Ashynn, and given that said events were likely caused by major spurts of passion that Humans seem more capable of than Singers, this was extremely dangerous. If Kaladin had been given any surge other than Gravitation, especially Destruction, it could have been catastrophic. 1

It's almost debunked as a theory because the Fused use the same surges as Radiants (not Voidbinding). Spoiler Quote Chaos You've recently said that Rosharans call everything Surgebinding. So my question is: does Khriss call what the Fused do "Surgebinding"? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Chaos Interesting. We still don't know what Voidbinding is, but we'll get there eventually, I'm sure. Brandon Sanderson You will. Shardcast Interview (Jan. 23, 2021) Quote Questioner [questions being asked on behalf of Alyx, a.k.a. FeatherWriter] About Renarin's Surgebinding. Are [his visions] influenced by Voidbinding instead of Surgebinding? Brandon Sanderson That's a RAFO. Questioner And then if they are influenced by Odium the way that Dalinar's are influenced by Honor. Brandon Sanderson That's a RAFO. I'm not going to talk about stuff like that! I have dropped some very blatant hints, and that is enough for me right now. Argent I asked pretty much the same thing last time, and you pointed me to a certain page. Can I tell her what the page was? Brandon Sanderson Yes. There are certain things going on with him that I feel are very blatant. I think he [Argent] is going to point them out to you. Shadows of Self Chicago signing (Oct. 12, 2015) Quote Argent Let's talk about Renarin, and Voidbinding. So, with that page we talked about, Renarin Voidbinds. I asked about visions, you pointed to Voidbinding chart, he Voidbinds. Is that using Stormlight to power abilities different from the Surgebindings we've seen? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Argent Is that what voidbinding is? Brandon Sanderson No, but close. You're on the right track. We are gonna get into that, I'm not gonna tell you what the chart means, and things like that. But yeah, something really weird is happening there. Footnote: The chart referenced is the back endsheet in The Way of Kings. Oathbringer Chicago signing (Nov. 21, 2017) Quote TheFoxQR (paraphrased) Is there temporal symmetry in between the Surge-binding and void-binding charts, from the front and back covers of The Way of Kings? As in, Surgebinding is a re-emerging system of the past, vs Voidbinding being a newly emerging system that will fully exist in the future? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) You can assume that Voidbinding has not been fully explored, but that parts of it have been looked into in the past. So I wouldn't say that temporal symmetry fully holds. General Reddit 2019 (Aug. 3, 2019) Hope that helps. 1
