Once he's sure that his ruse won't be discovered, he shouts "I have killed the duke, winning myself and my companions a pardon for the frankly unreasonable charges of being heretics! Stand down!"

He pushed more emotions at them— hopelessness, mainly. Lots of hopelessness. Just give up and lay down and be a useless rock. He shifted his aim to their chests as the voice directed.

She could almost tell that Intellect was conversing with another Spirit.
