She tried to stop him. "It's not that I don't want to, really! It's been so long I... I don't know if I can."

He paused in the doorway.

"You're one of the strongest people I know, Mare. I know you can. I just wish I knew how to help you see that."

"I'm- I'm going to try. I promise."

Tinker turned.

"It's been six years, Marewill. Don't try anymore. Just do it."

He left, gently closing the door behind him.

She took a deep breath. “Okay.”

Tinker walked.

He didn't go back to his parent's house. He didn't feel like explaining how that conversation had gone.

Was that fair to her?

Did I make a mistake?

Nah

She knows she needs to get over it, but no justice was ever served, that’s what she’s bitter about

She sighed, eating a piece of toast. Lucky Red sat at her side with his head on her lap. She pet it with her other hand until she finished the toast. She stood up and went to follow Tinker, Lucky Red close behind.

She found him sitting on the hill where they'd decided to build their house, overlooking the city.

...Who's Lucky Red?

Dougella walks back into the room, having been somewhere else. She sees Lee there and smiles, but notices Sweets and Mark having a little fued. "Mark, dont throw sharp objects within the house, it will destroy the walls."

"There you are!" Lee exclaimed, crossing over to her.

"I got confused, and for a second I thought I had the wrong location or something 😅"

He sat for a moment.

"...It scares me."

It was a strike, but she felt it was a deserved one. After all, it had been six years. In that time, Mark was the only Steele she saw semi-frequently, and even her brother had befriended him.

"I'm sorry."

He looked down.

"I'm not perfect," he said. "What happens when I make a mistake? What happens when I hurt you, even when I never wanted to?"

He turned. "Are you going to hold that over my head forever, too?"

"No!" she said immediately. "There's a major difference there. Those Steeles knew exactly what they were doing, they were conscious of those decisions. There was no accident there."

Tinker didn't look consoled. If anything he looked worse.
