"And our president is that honest an individual? For all anyone would know, we are keeping our promise. Fulfilling it, even, by defending the Free States. You could talk to the president. Convince them. You're all stuck, and you know it. You and I could be the key to bringing prosperity to the nation again."

"Opposinitionisinition is awesome! Hey, you know what got us into this situation! My opposition to you!"

“The president approved of this deal. He is weak, and unlike his predecessor, was not part of the war. His heart is weak, and he will allow no violence.”

You're right. Without opposition there would never be stories. Opposition creates conflict, and conflict drives the tales people tell to their children and grandchildren. After all, would we be here at all if you had just let yourself die?

The Greenspine waited in silence a long time. It waited until the silence was uncomfortable.

"You could be president."

She paused and considered this for a moment.

The Greenspine pounced on its opportunity.

"The president is weak, you say. You are not weaker than him, are you? We are both alike, more than you realize. In the animal world, when an opportunist sees weakness... She strikes. And ultimately, what is natural is only right."

He got up, looking around.

“Perhaps.”

A few medics stood nearby.

"A violent coup only further destabilizes the country. It opens up more cracks, more weaknesses for other opportunists to exploit. It takes too long to secure power by force. Perhaps something more shadowy would do... A smoke-filled room where nobody notices the knives. After all, there aren't any knives in a peaceful transfer of power, right? None but the sharp tongues and papercuts that carve a nation to your liking."

She began to smile. “We would not be able to remove your tracker, however.. if there were to be a.. mishap, with the induction of your hibernation….”

"Keep the tracker. It's better that way. And, of course, mishaps happen all the time. Do we have an agreement, then?"

It smiled back, if a monster like it could smile.

“What are you talking about?” She grinned, and left.

The Greenspine wouldn't be too worried if she didn't let him out of the arena. It would find a way somehow. Humans were like nails to the magnet of power. The Greenspine? Well, it was only driven by two things. It wanted to survive. And it wanted to eat. It had no interest in human affairs so long as they kept it alive and fed.

The Drominad Hunger Games had given it plenty of food. But it would never be satisfied until the day it died. And hopefully that day was far away.

Murr stared at them. He should have felt happy, maybe, but he couldn't even remember how it happened. How had he won? Had he killed more people? How many?

What he asked was, "What now?"

“You do a few shows then go to the Free States.”

"Publicly. You can't speak badly about the games. You forfeit your life and freedom if you do."

"Oh..." Murr blinked hard. "Should I know what happened? I don't really remember near the end there."
