I was thinking 2-3 weeks or something

"You people will never agree on anything," January said shaking his head.

"January . . ." The emperor said warningly, and Jan stiffened.

"Now then, lets address August first. March as your unhappy with the proposal, what would you suggest for him."

March leaned forward, expression darkening. "You know exactly what I have in mind."

The emperor's eyes hardened, understanding but clearly unhappy with the thought. "You know that is not and never will be an option."

"Why not?" August asked idly--clearly he knew what they were talking about. "Why shouldn't it be, Father?" Everyone at the table turned to look at him, a little shocked.

"We've had this discussion," The emperor replied, "You know why."

August eyes shifted to the table, and he didn't respond.

The emperor ran a hand over his face, "My children you are too biased to look at these things clearly. I will settle August's consequences: He will remain here with me for re-disciplining that I will handle myself, he will be restricted to the palace and will be under supervision, etc."

March muttered something under his breath.

"However, I am still open to opinions on July's sentence," The emperor concluded.

"You can confirm that then April?" The emperor asked, "That's good to know I suppose. But we will discuses the others in a moment, first let's make a decision on August and July."

The emperor watches him go up without a word. In fact he looked concerned Arke might fall.

October cleared his throat.

"If I may, I think that July could serve under me for a time--he needs more experience in the world and I can make it punishing enough."

June frowned, speaking for the first time. "July isn't a fighter, you can't take him to war!"

"From what I've heard of his resistance to arrest, he's fighter enough."

"October," August intervened, voice calm, "He'll be more of nuisance then a help."

"You're just trying to save him August, don't think you're being clever--worry about your own skin."

August frowned.

December leaned over to shake the shoulder of the man sitting next to her. He was wearing ostentatious robes, and a large scar covered the left half of his olive face. The entire meeting before then he'd been staring off into space, not seeing and not moving at all.

When he didn't respond, December just shrugged and turned away from him.

"Enough bickering," January said curtly, "Let's just come to a conclusion, restrictions on August and 3 spans of servitude for July. All in favor?"

"3 span?!" October asked, outraged. "He'll do more then 3 span, thank you very much."

"August should face bigger consequences then just mild restrictions, he's not a child he's a criminal," March grumbled under his breath.

What could she suggest that anyone would accept? Everyone knew she wouldn't want to be extremely harsh on him, and she couldn't be any harsher than they were if she wanted the strain on their relationship to heal...

"I have no other suggestion," she finally said. Her inflection was emotionless, yet July and August would be able to hear the pained resignation she hid from everyone else.

"Very well," The emperor said. He turned to the others looking at them expectantly.

"I think some sort of punishment is in order but sending him off with October is too far out of left field," December began, "If we're concerned about his rash actions than we shouldn't send him to a place that would actively encourage it."

"He'll get military discipline, we'll temper his rashness into something useful," October said, actually sounding calm for once.

January folded his hands in his lap, considering. His son shifted nervously in his chair. The man next to December continued to stare off into space.

"I think that's a good idea," July finally said.

August gave him an odd look, he hadn't expected that.

"I think learning under October would help me," July continued, successfully keeping his voice from shaking. "Really, I ran because I have a . . . a lot of pent up energy so physical training would help."

The emperor nodded thoughtfully, "And for how long?"

"I don't mind however long . . ." July said, his voice getting quieter as his courage waned.

"I'm hesitant to send him off to a punishment he wants . . ." January said, though he didn't sound unconvinced. "If 3 span is not enough for October, then how about 5?"

"That's still not--"

"Nothing would be long enough for you, March."

March rolled his eyes.

May sits silently, looking at July with bewilderment.

"Very well then, that is enough agreement for me to close the matter," The emperor said, shuffling the papers in front of him on the table.

"Now, we'll do with the accomplices to the escape, before we determine judgement I'd like to hear each ones testimony." He glanced up at Arke, and just shook his head.

"Any volunteers to go first?"

Arke hangs himself by his feet, writes a note, and lets it drift down. it simply says "You will read my testimony. I cant speak. although there's nothing much to testify for"

"I assumed so," He said, after reading the paper. "Just a brief summary of your involvement in the events and why will suffice."

Jolane sat between Keryth and Naise. For the first week or so, he hadn’t been too fond of her, but he grew to love her quickly.

“I wonder how July is,” Jolane muttered. Naise chuckled quietly. “What?”

”You’ve mentioned July nearly every day for the past week. You might have denied it when I asked before, but it’s pretty obvious how you feel about him.”

”He’s my friend!”

”He’s more than that,” Keryth said. “You don’t worry about your friends every waking moment of your life. You think about them. But when you love someone, you can’t get them off your mind.” He smiled at his wife, who pecked his cheek.

“It’s okay to love someone,” Naise added. “July… He did a lot for you. He freed you, protected you, helped you get back to us… It makes total sense. You don’t have to be ashamed of loving him.”

”It’s just… I’m… It’s a little embarrassing.”

”What about it?”

”He was the first consistent guy in my life who actually cared about me. What if he’s not…”

”Then you find out. You’ll figure it out, kid.”

if you guys don't want too, we can just skip through the testimony part because I know this is getting boring for everyone.

I'm going to start some action soon I promise, I just need your permission to skip through this part of the hearing.

Because you were all there we could just assume that everyone explains their pov and if you want to add anything in particular just tell me.

Jolane was tired of waiting.

It was pretty obvious. Naise's "We can't be sure" speech was losing its effect, she could tell. Her little sister just kept getting more and more antsy.

She wasn't sure how she felt about it. Shouldn't she be more willing to stay with her sister? Her biological relative, who loved her? She knew Jolane loved her and Keryth as well, but... It wasn't nearly the same as it was for July.

Three weeks after they'd left their parents' village, Naise went into Jolane's room to tell her dinner was ready. She arrived on a scene of her sister folding dresses and her blanket, and putting them, along with a few other items she'd gotten in the past few weeks, in saddle bags.

Naise sighed, making Jolane jump slightly. "So, you're leaving now?"

Jolane turned back to the bed she'd been using. "It's been three weeks. I was expecting... well, one, maybe two at most."

"I wanted to make sure you were safe-"

"I know. And I thank you for it- really, I do. But..." She turned back fully to her sister. "I agreed to leave while August and July shook the people who were tailing them. I'm sure they've done that by now, they've probably hidden for long enough..."

Naise leaned against the doorframe. "I'm guessing there's nothing I can do to stop you..."

Jolane shook her head. "I'm... I'm sorry I'm leaving so suddenly, but-"

"No, don't be sorry. Honestly, I'm surprised you didn't leave sooner."

Jolane sat on the bed and looked at the saddle bags. The slight red tint in her cheeks showed her embarrassment at being found out.

"At least stay here until the morning," Naise requested. "It's dangerous to travel alone, especially at night, and especially as a woman."

"You and Keryth aren't going to come with me?"

Naise chuckled. "We have lives, too, you know. Much as I'd love to to protect you, we can't just uproot everything whenever there's something you want to do. Monarda asked me to watch Barak and Rahab tomorrow."

"But- doesn't Keryth go to Truehearth sometimes? To sell meat and hide?"

Naise mocked consideration. "You drive a hard bargain..."

"Naise!"

"Okay, I'm sorry. But you are right, he hasn't gone for a while... Tell you what, I'll talk to him tonight while you rest. Whether you're going alone or with him, you're leaving in the morning, not at night. Alright?"

Jolane sighed. "Alright."

Naise smiled sadly and walked over to her. She took her sister by the hands, stood her up, and pulled her into a hug. After a second's hesitation, Jolane hugged her back. After a few moments, she realized that Naise was crying silently.

"I... You're not going to lose me again. I'll do everything I can to make sure of it."

A quiet sob was Naise's response. Jolane hugged her tighter.
