sylfrena She/her Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Roshar's seasons have been bugging me for a while now. As far as I know seasons have not been mentioned much in other books, and the ones in Roshar are extremely irregular. Are these actual seasons or just weather patterns? Please give answers or speculation if you have it. 1
Treamayne Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 (edited) Welcome to the Shard. I see you have made an Intro post, you may want to consider mentioning there which books you have (or have not) read (whichever list is shorter). If you do not know how to edit the first post, please see the Sharder FAQ. 11 hours ago, sylfrena said: Roshar's seasons have been bugging me for a while now. Please give answers or speculation if you have it. In order to avoid possible spoilers for Oathbringer and RoW, I'll note that the reason why "seasons" seems to be used in a manner that does not makes sense is because they are using it wrong - for the same reason you see them using "chicken" for every bird, or "wine" for every version of alcohol. WoB and slight spoilers: Spoiler Quote Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Seasons on Roshar are based around the storms (ie long lighter storms in the winter, short stronger storms in the summer) rather than time or temperature Temperature stays fairly constant because of the lack of an axial tilt Despite not having traditional seasons they have the concept of seasons which must have come from somewhere else (read as: cosmere shenanigans) A Memory of Light Seattle Signing (Feb. 12, 2013) Slightly more spoilers: Spoiler With no axial tilt, there is no true summer/winter - instead, these terms are "remembered" from Ashyn - the planet humans came to Roshar from; but are used basically as "hotter then normal" or "colder than normal" while spring/fall is mostly "planting time" and "harvesting time" respectively. Hope that helps Edited August 18, 2024 by Treamayne SPAG 2
