Trusk'our he/him Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 A competent Soulcaster is stupidly dangerous. Personally, I'd be more afraid of fighting Jasnah with ample Stormlight than Kaladin, because even if I was too Invested to auto-kill, she could just Soulcast sir into stone to encase me in so I'd suffocate. In any case, I'm wondering, does it seem realistic that a good, plausible counter to being encased in Soulcast iron or immolated in burning pitch would be to "Soulcast" the surrounding matter with the Intent to not change? Basically, could two Soulcasters render each other obsolete in combat without needing to flip-flop the state of matter around them (i.e. one Soulcasts stone to mud and you Soulcast it back to stone, which very likely would just trap you in the stone), but rather being able to counter Command matter to resist the other's Soulcasting? Or, barring that, what alternatives might there be to counteracting Soulcasting, particularly in a combat oriented scenario?
Through the Living Heir he/him Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 Yeah, I agree. Simply turning someone to stone, or the air to fire, or other absolutely devastating attacks are the most basic transformations. A soulcaster with access to modern particle science could quite feasibly make radioactive materials, antimatter, or other highly dangerous materials (I don’t know what pure electrons would do, but I don’t think it’s good), rendering them nearly unstoppable. Countering-wise, it’s already been demonstrated that this is possible; soulcasters can create aluminum (of course, you can’t breathe through aluminum either). I think aluminum is the most effective way to defeat a soulcaster, followed by investiture bestowing magics. A skybreaker could probably pull of the whole “sideways gravity railgun” trick to hit a soulcaster with a large and fast moving invested object. Something to drain stormlight, like a Larkin, would also be able to defeat a soulcaster, simply by causing them to run out of power. Shardplate is too invested to soulcast easily and can be airtight, so that may also be an effective counter, although immobilization from soilcast air into a rigid material will still defeat them. I think part of the reason soilcasters aren’t completely unstoppable is that transforming things takes a lot of stormlight. Huh, I seem to have written a small essay. Anyway, that’s my thoughts. I’m looking forward to seeing what everybody else thinks.

This. Soulcasting takes A LOT of Stormlight. Jasnah at the Thaylen Fields was able to do what she did only because she was literaly inside the Perpendicularity. In normal circumstances there is no way Soulcaster would have amount of Stormlight suficient to change giant mases of matter more than few times. 1
