Where did did the divine breath go? Spoilers involved

If Vasher is returned, where did his divine breath go during most of the book?  Does he have some way of storing that without killing himself?  How did he figure that out without trial and error (and consequently a lot of deaths)?  Feel free to point me to an existing thread if this has been covered.
