Sorry for the long post, I got bored :P

Jenny drifted off to sleep, smiling slightly. She found herself dreaming. She was running through a forest, as she had many times before. She could hear growling and the thud of heavy feet behind her. Jenny didn’t dare risk looking at the source of the sounds, lest she slow herself down.

She leapt over a fallen tree without breaking stride. An unnoticed root sticking up from the ground caught her foot, and she nearly tripped. The noise pursuing her was getting louder, and Jenny was becoming tired. She knew that she couldn’t keep running for much longer.

She took a sudden turn and jumped into the lower branches of a nearby tree. Jenny then scaled the tree, moving so quickly that she might as well have been dashing up its side. She perched on top of it, trying to stay quiet.

The amorphous monster skidded to a halt. There was a pause. Then, she heard sniffing. The thuds grew closer and closer until they stopped directly below her. The tree began to shake as the monster rammed it. Jenny barely held on, her grip slipping more with each quake. She knew that there was no escape.

She took a deep breath, then jumped downwards, drawing Sword. She slammed it into the head of the beast, and it collapsed. Jenny landed next to it and stood, panting. Whatever the thing had been dissipated into dust.

For a moment, everything was still. The only sound was her still rapid breathing. Then, she heard another noise behind her and stabbed Sword towards it without looking. There was a pained grunt, one that didn’t sound like something a monster would make. Jenny turned to find Edgar falling to the ground.

“No, no, no, no…”

His wound looked bad. She’d stabbed him through the heart, right on target. Jenny tried to stop the bleeding, but too much damage had been done. His head turned to look at her and he spoke in a weak, raspy voice.

“I trusted you.”

Tears streamed down Jenny’s face.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”

Edgar looked away from her and his chest stopped rising and falling. She felt for a pulse and couldn’t find one. She scrambled backwards, horrified at what she had done. A wave of sorrow and guilt crashed into her, and she screamed.

The ground below Edgar opened up and he fell. Jenny rushed over, tried to grab him, but it was too late. He had already disappeared into the seemingly infinite chasm. She dropped to her knees, numb.

A familiar voice spoke from behind her. She didn’t bother turning around.

“He trusted you, Jenny. But you aren’t worthy of trust. He should’ve known better. She should’ve known better. You should know better.”

Jenny didn’t reply. She simply knelt, silent, her vision blurred from crying. Jenny was a murderer. That was all she was. She deserved to be alone.

She woke with a start, sitting up. Edgar was there. Hadn’t she… no, that was a dream. Just a dream.

Next time it might not be a dream.

Jenny shuddered at the thought. She knew that it could be right.

Edgar looked at her, seeming worried. “Is everything ok?”

Tell him. Tell him he’s wrong to trust you.

Jenny rubbed her eyes, making sure that Edgar was actually there. She felt at her side. Sword was still there, concealed under her clothing. She hadn’t drawn it. She looked back to Edgar. His shirt was covered in blood.

She blinked, and the blood was gone. Her eyes widened. She was losing it, wasn’t she?

You’re seeing what will be.

“Bad dream.”

She considered unsheathing Sword to fiddle with it, but Jenny didn’t trust herself enough to wield it yet.

He gently pulled her a little tighter against him, hoping it would comfort her. “I know those, it seems they tend to happen a lot to us demigods. It’s probably worse for you, as a child of the Big 3. Can you tell me what it was about?”

Jenny couldn’t lie to him. He deserved to know. He had to know that she was dangerous. She needed to give him a chance to run. Her voice came out as a whisper.

”I killed you.”

She couldn’t meet his eyes.

Jenny’s aversion to lying skips a lot of quiet angst

“Oh…” Edgar didn’t know how to respond. Should he press her for more details? No, that wasn’t right. Should he say it was just a dream? She was obviously shaken, so it extended beyond just that. Should he say nothing? No, she needed comfort.

“It’s ok. I’m here now.” That should help, right?

Jenny nodded. Edgar wasn’t upset. He probably should’ve been upset. She was glad that he wasn’t, though. Was that selfish of her?

”If I start acting weird- well, weirder than standard Jenny weird, please tell me, ok?”

She had no idea how to protect him from herself.

“I’ll try…but, Jenny, I like your weirdness. Is what makes you, well, you. And I like you. I really like you.” He blushed.

Jenny blushed. Edgar was so distracting. She probably should’ve been more worried, but he could make it difficult to feel badly.

”I really like you too.”

He liked her weirdness. He didn’t tolerate it, he liked it. She smiled.

He smiled back. “Are you going to be ok?” He really hoped she would, if she wasn’t it would be his fault. After all, he’d been the one she’d killed in her dream, without him she wouldn’t be thinking about this.

“I… yeah, I think so.”

Edgar was safe, she hadn’t done anything wrong. She shouldn’t trust random figures from strange dreams, anyways. Following advice from them was probably foolish. Dreams often made no sense. She didn’t want to have another one, though, so she stayed awake.

Jenny ignored the blood on his shirt.

He tried to give her a reassuring smile, and he relaxed a little bit, his arm still around her. “That’s good.” He hoped she wasn’t lying to him, but, then again, Jenny didn’t lie.

Jenny tried to relax too. She did a decent job of it. The confines of the bus made her feel trapped, so she looked out the window. The people passing by the window made her feel nervous, so she looked at Edgar. She liked looking at him, he was handsome.

He looked back, his expression quite distracted. He was smiling though, looking right at her.

Jenny didn’t think it was possible to not smile when Edgar smiled. She was already getting antsy, though. That wasn’t a great sign; the bus hadn’t even left yet and the ride was going to be long. She felt like she should be doing something to prepare for the rest of the quest, but it wasn’t like she could practice combat on a bus. There were other powers, however.

“Edgar, can you please wake me up if I fall asleep? I’m gonna try something.”

Hypnokinesis could let you control dreams, to an extent. Some of Jenny’s siblings were proficient in it. One of its simplest uses was making someone fall asleep.

“What are you going to try…?” He wanted to know before he said he would, he didn’t want her to do anything dangerous.

“There’s this thing Hades kids can do called Hypnokinesis. It lets you control dreams and make people fall asleep. I think it might help me avoid nightmares. I haven’t practiced it before, though. I’m gonna start with trying to make myself instantaneously fall asleep.”

Jenny grinned. This was going to be exciting! She didn’t practice using her powers very often.

“Ooh, wow, that sounds really cool and useful? Is it dangerous to try?” He grinned back.

“No idea! My siblings can use it safely, so I probably can too.”

Jenny hoped she would be able to figure it out. Hypnokinesis couldn’t be too much harder than Necromancy, right?

“I…I don’t really…” he stopped. He had to trust her enough to let her take risks. He took a deep breath, then continued. “If you think you can do it safely, then I think trying it would be good.”

“Great!”

Jenny focused, trying to figure out what the heck she was supposed to do. Trying to increase her tiredness didn’t do much. She just was drawing attention to what was already there.

She decided to go with trying to decrease her awakeness. That seemed like it would separate what she was attempting to do from regular sleeping. When she focused on her awakeness for a while, she eventually felt like she could almost touch it. She mentally nudged it, and managed to dissipate it.

Jenny proceeded to instantly fall asleep, slumping forwards.

Edgar caught her, immediately feeling a stab of worry. Was she hurt? Had it worked? He shoved down his anxiety. He trusted her. That meant he had to trust that she had done this too, right? He could still worry, but he couldn’t be overprotective. Or at least, he’d try not to be.

He shook her shoulder. “Jenny, please wake up.”

Jenny woke up. She didn’t remember what happened, but Edgar seemed to have just stopped her from falling. That meant there was some missed time. She’d done it correctly! Probably!

”It worked! How long was I out?”

He gave a sigh of relief, and had to hold himself back from hugging her. Instead, he just grabbed her hand again, holding it tightly. “It did, I’m really glad it did. She only a few seconds.”
