"I don't know . . . I was already up. I think it came from the other side of the house, but I thought I'd check on you first."

Suddenly Sharpo came running down the hall. "Sharp says everybody needs to come to Mister Sir Sharp III's room right away."

Kandy's eyes widen. "What for?"

Sharpo lead them through the maze of halls until they got to two large doors that clearly lead to the master bedroom. They were ajar, and Sharp stood outside anxiously tapping his foot. When they got there he nodded to Sharpo, who then left.

"I-I sorry you had to be here when this happened Kandy . . ." He said trailing off as he lead them inside. 

The room was what you'd expect from a master bedroom. A big fourposter bed against one wall and thick curtains blocking the windows. Sharon and the maid sat on the bed; both of them were in tears. Sharvil sat in one of the rooms armchairs, his head in his hands.

 Sharp III, the man who had been sitting at the head of the table last night, was lying on the ground in a pool of blood, clearly dead several hours ago.

The maid sniffled loudly. "I was . . . I was just checking if 'e wanted breakfast the-the way 'e does earlier in the mornin' but than I found 'im like this and I-I . . ." She trailed off.

"It's alright dear," Sharon said, rubbing her back. 

"Sharlee's the one who screamed this morning," Sharp clarified, "When she say the body."

Sharp'i ran his fingers  through his hair, "But how . . . I don't understand how . . ."

"I locked . . ." Sharlee mumbled. "I locked the doors last night, the way I do every night . . ."

"Maybe the killer came through the windows?" Sharp wondered aloud. He moved over there and opened the curtains, inspecting each window. These windows were some that had been visibly boarded up from the outside. The boards were still in place on all of them, and there was no damage or scratch marks left from someone removing them and putting them back in place. 

Sharp's efforts were halfhearted. He knew, just as well as Sharp'i, that this hadn't been an outside affair. Tensions in the family had been rising for months, ever since the rebellion and the fall of The House. Sharp'i had thought they'd reached a balance of mostly just ignoring one another, but it seems that hadn't been enough.

He hadn't loved his father, but that didn't mean he should've been murdered. More heartbreaking than the death was the fact that one of his family members had done it.

 Sharon wiped away her tears, and looked around the room in a taking-charge sort of way. "Suspicious or not, we can't just sit here all day . . . why don't Sharlee and I work on some breakfast, and Sharp'i and Sharp can try to clean . . . this up when help arrives."

She stood, brushing herself off, not giving Sharvil the chance to contradict her. 

"Kandy, why don't you join us in the kitchen? This certainly isn't a sight for a young lady."

"Don't be silly dear, a young lady such as yourself should do her best to stay far away from these sorts of things." A darkness entered her eyes for a brief moment, but left as soon as it came. She moved across the room and grabbed Kandy, pulling her away from Sharp'i, with surprisingly strong hands. "Come along now, dear."

She led Kandy, with Sharlee tentatively trailing behind, down to the kitchen they had snuck through the day before. The maid began pulling out dishes and ingredients. Sharon didn't join her, but instead began overseeing the work.

A long moment full of clattering pots and pans passed.

"Do you like being Sharp'i's friend dear?" Sharon asked suddenly.
