I did a basic search but nothing came up. my question is if atium geodes will reform somewhere. Since there weren't any mistborn in alloy I guess atium wasn't needed. but if there are any mistborn in the next series will they have access to atium?

There were atium mistings, so they could burn it. It's (to my understanding) a physical manifestation of Ruin, and that technically still exists in Harmony, so I would assume it would reform. It would just take a while. And I think I remember reading that Sazed moved the Pits, which would indicate that they are still active, but he doesn't want anybody to know about it.

Short answer maybe. Longer answer is right here

ZCHANCE (15 OCTOBER 2008)

I'm surprised no one else has asked but does this new world have atium? If atium was the body of Ruin then it would seem when Sazed took up Ruin's power he would have reabsorbed all of the atium. New atium then would be bits of Sazed's new powers and weaken him with each newly formed bead. It would seem then that if atium exists it would be much rarer, and mean that Sazed would not be able to control this process.

I guess I am trying to understand why he would want to allow any atium to make its way into the hands of people or rather out of his control?

BRANDON SANDERSON (16 OCTOBER 2008)

It's theoretically possible for atium to appear in the future, but right now Sazed has no plans to release any of it to the people. It is, effectively, now something of myth and legend.

One thing to notice is that it takes around 300 years for atium crystals to regrow, and Alloy is set 300 years into the future. There are references in the AoL broadsheet to a place called the pits of Eltania, which might harbor atium.

Cosmere Spoilers

Hoid is also here, just pulling a cameo apparently. But as important as Lord Joshin and Lady Mi'chelle are, I doubt Hoid came only for there wedding. He might have been checking to see if atium is back. But then again I'm pretty sure Brandon has also said the Pits of Hathsin are gone, so who knows?

Personally I think that Atium may be reforming, and I think that Wax's uncle is breeding allomancers in the hopes of finding an Atium misting. An atium misting would be immensely powerful- especially with no mistborn around. I suppose it is possible that he is trying to breed mistborn, but that seems less likely to me with the timeline and everything else.

I think I read somewhere that brandon mentioned that sazed could choose to regrow atium (or lerasium, for that matter) but he prefers not to. so the answer would be "no, there will not be new atium, except maybe some nnuggets he'll make specifically for marsh to keep him going".

But I'm not 100% sure of this, I may remember wrong

I'm guessing you wanted this

It's theoretically possible for atium to appear in the future, but right now Sazed has no plans to release any of it to the people. It is, effectively, now something of myth and legend.

And possibly this

Marsh has the bag of Atium that KanPaar sent to be sold, as well as several nuggets in his stomach. So, I guess 'immortal' is the wrong phrase. He's got the only remaining atium in the world and can keep himself around for a long, long while—but he WILL eventually run out. Unless Sazed does something.

So it doesn't seem like any more Atium will form naturally

I have the assumption that once burned Lerasium reforms in the geodes.

(Which we know reform after being shattered, as they must have shattered in the past for anyone to know that using allomancy near them shatters them).

There are questions as to where the atrium is when it is not reforming, or between forming and being burnt.

This is a kinda important question, wrt Elands Gambit (as it were)

A similar question is what happens to the lerasium of someone who has no children, and indeed if having children decreased the amount of lerasium in the parent.

I assume that for balance Harmony needs there to be equal amounts of Lerasium and Attrium in the world.

Existent Lerasium:

* Spooks piece (still present in his decendents)

* That in the various mistings that survived the fall.

*(debatably) Hoid's Piece

Existent Atrium:

* Marshes spikes

* Marshes nuggets

* Atrium holdings of the various prefall houses (though marsh might have dug up and collected these?)

* Other Spikes

I think we are actually short on Lerasium,

unless Spooks piece was huge

Word of God disagrees though, as posted above.

I assume you meant that once burned Atium reforms in the geodes :P

Lerasium is not passed down to your children? When ingested Lerasium doesn't stay in your body, it is burned by people, turning them into Mistborn by changing their sDNA, it is this sDNA which is passed onto their children not the actual Lerasium.

I also don't see any reason that there have to be equal amounts of Atium and Lerasium in the world since all that would do is alter the relative strength of the two aspects. Sazed might be slightly more of Preservation since a tiny amount of Ruins power is stored in the form of Atium but I doubt it would be that significant.

Here's a bit about why atium and lerasium aren't equally present.

CHAOS

Why is there such an imbalance between the amount of atium and the amount of lerasium in the world? Also, why are atium and lerasium very imbalanced in Allomantic power (Lerasium is far more useful than atium, really)?

BRANDON SANDERSON

There isn't. Leras is just spread out further. He is in the mists, in the Well, and in the lerasium. Ruin's power however is considerate strictly in atium.

But during AoL we have no Well of Ascension and we have two types of mists so it is still a bit unbalanced.

Also I've always had a problem with that quote, didn't Ruin have a Shardpool in the pits somewhere?

Posted

Why would it be unbalanced? Little atium, little lerasium. No Shardpools at all and presumably the two mists are about equal, so I think we're good. The whole Ruin's Shardpool thing is confusing. Sometimes it seems like there is a pool in the Pits somewhere, and other times Brandon says that the Pool is the Pits, with each crystal thing being a sort of mini-Shardpool. So I honestly have no idea.

Actually there has to be more Atium than Lerasium....much more in my opinion. why? We know that humans have a significant portion of Preservations power in them (that is what gives them sentience, this imbalance was what started all the ruin-Preservation war)

I am assuming that Sazed hasn't changed that as yet....so it makes sense that he would have to unload some of his power as Atium or risk making his intent unbalanced. So, Yes, I believe atium geodes will regenerate.

It's supposed to be a small amount, on the scale of Ruin and Preservation. And honestly even without atium Ruin almost destroyed the world, so... how much of his power could it contain? If it's the greater bulk of it, Sazed would like be more Ruin-y than he is now. So assume a third... and each bead is therefore a tiny percentage of that bulk. Who knows how many beads it would take to offset the power Preservation gave to humanity. Maybe just enough to keep a certain Inquisitor going?
