Archery

Does anyone here do archery? Either as a competitive sport, Hunting, or just a hobby? I used to and I'm going to be picking it up again. Archery season is coming up so I need to get good again before I can go take an extended nap in the wilderness.

I did it once. It was pretty fun.

I managed to get pretty close to a bullseye. :)

When I was younger I had a really pretty nice kiddy compound bow, and I got pretty good with it. It's been much too small for me for a long time and I haven't been interested in getting a bow large enough for me.

I have a bow that is older than me. It's about 25 years old and it's awesome. My uncle traded it along with a Firebird (The car) for a Browning Mirage that he used to win multiple competitions. For being so old it still keeps up with my dads 2008 Bowtech Tomkat. It has a super modified drop away arrow rest with an extender that allows the arrows to be almost cross bow bolt length, just at the legal minimum length. It only has a 60-ish pound draw weight (My dad's is over 9000 75 pounds and my friend has a 100 pound draw weight PSE bow)

That sounds like some sweet stuff. I'm guessing you live in the mid-west like I do? Nobody else that I've met has discussions about their weaponry quite like people in these states do B)

Oh man, this brings back memories off the pvc bows we made as kids. Those things were awesome! I could shoot mine across the entire pasture, over the street, and into the neighbor's yard. I still have an old longbow my cousin gave me that I strung with some heavy duty cord a long time ago. I've no idea what the draw is, but it's not easy to pull back. I would practice more often but my brothers and I lost all the arrows. i'm not that bad of a shot, but we only had about five arrows to begin with. I generally prefer throwing weapons such as tomahawks, knives, and shuriken.

Lefty, I'll have you know I'm from California and I LOVE weapons. I have have a bunch, even a pair of Chinese tiger swords, or hook sword as you may know them. But you're generally right. With all the dumb laws and restrictions, accruing weapons is pretty darn difficult in California and in the midwest it's pretty easy. I envy you the fact that you can get switchblades, butterfly knives, and sword canes shipped to your home. I have to have them shipped to cousins in Colorado who send 'em to me.

We should start a weaponry thread.

I've always wanted to get into Archery but it's one of those things I never got around to.

Ditto that.  We had some "toy" bows that my dad and his brothers played with in the late 50's.  My own brother and I used to set up this big styrofoam target in the backyard and go to town.  They weren't very sophisticated, but I've always love the idea of archery.

  • 2 weeks later...

Do you guys shoot with both eyes open or only your dominant eye open? I've been shooting from the time I was like. .  seven years old and up (I'm in my twenties now). I was always told to close one eye, but lately I keep hearing people shooting with both eyes open and it's apparently a thing now. so I was just curious.

Apparently you never saw Disney's Pocahontas.

Can someone come hang around in our yard?  We've got turkeys for the picking (not too long now until Thanksgiving here in the States...)!  This picture was taken this morning.  I counted an even dozen.

(Edit so the picture was actual visible.)
