TAAron managed to meet her eyes through the haze.

"It's... okay." His voice was louder than normal, like he was talking over something, and he seemed to have trouble getting the words out.

"TAAron, can I help? Please?"

He didn't seem to hear her, even as he held her gaze.

She slapped him gently. "TAAron!"

He didn't react.

Maybe I can... No. That's wrong.

She hugged him, feeling suddenly scared.

He felt it distantly. She's... afraid for me. He grimly considered his last resort. He was fairly sure that he'd be able to adjust with enough time, but the longer he was incapacitated the more likely it would be that she'd try and do something about it.

"I'm gonna make a deal," she whispered. "Okay?"

He still didn't seem to hear.

TAAron hesitated for a moment longer before caving. Silence. He weighed the word with the strength of command, and his stomach sickened as the voices cut off. He hadn't wanted to use the link to command anyone, but it had been necessary.

"Haly?" The intense glow around him faded most of the way, and his voice was back to normal.

Up to you if she went through with anything in that moment.

She sighed in relief. "You okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine. It was just more than I expected."

“Did it… work?”

"I haven't actually tried yet. I just needed to check in with you now that I'm fine."

“Oh… okay.”

"Try to actually do it now. Then hopefully figure out how to let go of them for the most part."

She nodded.

TAAron closed his eyes and concentrated. He didn't know exactly what sort of connection he was trying to make. He made the first thing that came to mind, a sort of historical bond to him that imitated a shared origin or homeland. As the offer was accepted by billions, his power shifted a bit, but it didn't spread out or leave him.

He sighed, and opened his eyes. "I think I did something. But it didn't work, not how I hoped. I'm still... this." He gestured at his faintly glowing body.

Something twisted in her gut.

“That’s okay,” she managed.

"No, it isn't. I gave you false hope. I'm sorry."

“It’s… it’s fine.”

"You don't need to say that. You can be upset, or mad, or whatever you need to be."

She leaned against him.
