Tal shuddered. “I-that-” he bowed his head, then lifted it up, looking pained. “You have no reason to believe me, but it’s part of the magic. It feeds on…on internal destruction, I guess you could say. On the pain and despair it causes people. I swear, Ac—Addison. I know this sounds like a petty excuse but it wasn’t me. I swear I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

She said nothing, but caught the stutter. I’ll ask when there’s less people around.

Pic noticed the break in speech, and momentarily looked confused. He kept humming and sent his two staves to hover just over the floor between Lundyn and Tal.

Lundyn was visibly nervous. She was worried she was going to make things worse by trying to talk to the voice, but she didn't want to seem weak, so she kept quiet and fidgeted with the cuffs of her jacket.
