"No. I chose to go to the Tower, and I knew it could be dangerous."

Rue shook her head. "You almost died," she said again. "And I couldn't protect you."

Weak...

"You healed me, Rue. I would have died if you weren't there. It was not your fault." He spoke firmly.

"The funny thing about oaths...they accept what you believe to be true as truth, regardless of whether it is or not."

"The same is the case for you. And I don't think it's possible to be completely objective about blame, anyway. But either way, I do not blame you for it, and you should not blame yourself for it. All anyone can do is their best effort, and we both did just that. It's over, and I'm fine."

Rue frowned, the first expression she'd made since they'd started talking. "Why do you let things go? Why don't you care?"

"I think it's much healthier not to hold onto things. Especially those that really no longer matter. We're both alive, aren't we?"

"Yes. We are." It would be better if I weren't...too weak...an inconvenience and a trouble... "Perhaps there are other things you should learn nod to care about."

"I find that it's very healthy to care about people. And you do matter. You always have, and you always will."

TAAron had a moment of thought. "Perhaps you're right about that, somewhat. People you care about can hurt you more easily. But I think it's worth the risk, sometimes." He gave her a very genuine smile.

Rue sniffed. "If you had died, it would have been...more than an annoyance. I should not like to be inconvenienced like that."

TAAron laughed. "That's a roundabout way of saying you care too. Thank you."

"I don't--I don't mean to. And I don't want to. How do I stop?"

"It's not something you can really stop. And it's not something I think you should. I have no intention to hurt you, and I will do my very best to make sure I never do. Maybe... give caring a shot?"

"If it ends up being more bad than good... I'd have failed. And in that case, I hope someday you'll find someone who deserves your care." He looked down, no longer seeming quite so positive.
