She looked at him, tears pooling in her eyes again. "I have already been hurt. I don't think there is much else you can do to me that would hurt me more. I... I trust you, Daniel. Please. trust me too." Rex sniffed but didn't wipe at the tears falling from her eyes.

Rex shivered, a sudden chill creeping over her. "I still believe you are. Nothing you do can change that." Rex reached up and wiped at the dried blood on her forehead. Then, she grasped the rock in her hand again, folded her hands in her lap, and starred at them silently.

Daniel felt very guilty. Julie had just been…killed? And here he was with another girl. It wasn’t anything like with Julie, he didn’t love her, but still, he felt awful. But she needed him, and so he’d be there for her, no matter how much it hurt.
