Was something weird happening when Painter made /  summon a paint brush while driving off the stable nightmare a second time? This was on page 345 in chapter 29.

I don't think it's terribly strange, but it is uncommon. Yumi notes on the next page that both the brush and the ink wasn't 'real' and should have vanished, but it remained due to it being an extension of Nikaro's cognitive and spiritual aspects. 'As natural as his own heart'

Realmatically, I think it's how his perception manifested in Shadesmar - kind of like how  they were able to keep their clothing manifested because they viewed it as part of themselves.

This is similar to something in Stormlight, when Shallan draws people in their "best" form rather than what they are.

The way I thought of it is that Painter, as a Cognitive Shadow, harnessed his spiritual connection to painting and paintbrushes to summon one that was more real than just channeling the soul of a paintbrush.

Minor somewhat suspect SP4 spoiler

Spoiler

I think it's more similar to shardweapons and the little we've seen of Auxiliary rather than the manifesting we've seen in Shadesmar.

Spoiler that last part, while this is Cosmere Spoilers, it is published spoilers. Mark it as an SP4 spoiler.

Serious answer: His Intent to paint and drive off the nightmare was strong enough that he momentarily reshaped/extended his cognitive aspect to include the brush.

Joke answer: He used the rouge hijo that first talked to Yumi as a Shardbrush.
