Looking back we've known for a while that there's something odd about the Shardpool on Elantris, since it presumably doesn't just dump someone who uses it into the Dor plasma in the CR. Nor is it in of itself plasma and it doesn't restore power to an Elantrian who enters it. What exactly is filling that Shardpool?

It does. When you go through you get shoved into the Investure storm, I have no idea how people survive it.

Because it isn't the Dor, at least in that, it isn't the exact same stuff as the plasma storm in the cognitive realm; it's Devotion's power ( Mostly, at least, might be some Dominion) dripping into the physical realm in a concentrated form ( Liquid investiture).

It's still keyed to Devotion or the Dor, pretty much the same reason not every Metalborn can use the mists on Scadrial; Purified Dor is not just Perpendicularity juice; something more was done to it. Elantians aren't Nightblood or Returned; they can't just consume all forms of investiture. The Well of Ascension lets you use all the magic juice because preservation set it up like that. Cultivation's Perpendicularity and the Pits of Hathsin are presumably more like The Pool, given they aren't being constantly used and abused.

The other thing is if preservation and ruin had been taken up separately, the WoA may become like the pool due to no longer being the prison of Ruin.
