Aloha,

Thank you everyone for the warm wishes as I just joined the forum this week! I hope this is allowed, but please go ahead and take this down if it's not:

As I've proclaimed that I'd like to become fully immersed in the Cosmere, I created a Notion database to track my reading progress. I was sending it to a friend and had to do some work to explain it to him... as such, I wondered if this would be of value to anyone else, so I decided to create a "public" copy in case someone might find it useful:

https://www.notion.so/tatumvay/Cosmere-Reading-To-Share-34fcdede51624f9b863f82e77ad5d800?pvs=4

If you'd like to use it, please go up to "Duplicate" the page into your own Notion Workspace.

Below the database, there is a toggle list of "Column Definitions" that explains how I've organized the columns, their data fields, and some of my reasoning behind them. You can click on the carrot next to the title to expand/minimize this list.

I've included a screenshot of it as well.

You'll have to excuse the information if anything is inaccurate, as I'm only about 46% done with reading the relevant Cosmere texts.

I'm always open to feedback and refinement. Please let me know if you have any suggestions and I hope it's useful to someone else! Happy tracking!

Welcome to the Forums.

In case you are not yet familiar with the tools on this forum:

Spoiler

At the bottom left of a post you will see a "+" icon, a "Quote" link, and (your posts only) and Edit and Options tools. On the bottom right you will see an up arrow.

  • The Up Arrow is how you thank people or "like" a post
  • The "Quote" link is exactly that, when you click it the quote will be added to the reply at the bottom of the thread wherever the cursor is
    • So, if you have already started to reply before you decide to quote you can then add the quote before or after your text depending on the cursor location when you click "Quote"
  • The + icon is multi-quote. As you read a thread, if you want to quote multiple items you click that for each post
    • As you click +, you should see a toaster pop-up on the bottom right of the browser window showing how many quotes you will have
    • They are added in the order you click the + icon, not in the original post order, so you can set the order of quotes for your reply
    • When you are ready to reply, click on the toaster pop-up and it will take you directly to the reply section and add the quotes automatically
  • Finally, you can also highlight a small section of a post and, when hovering over the highlit portion, click the "Quote" button that pops up.
  • Also note that you can move quotes after they have been added to your reply.
    • For example, you add a quote and realize there are no empty lines below it for you to type - so you can hit "enter" before the quote to make an empty line then when you hover over a quote you will see a 4-way arrow at the top-left that you can use to drag the quote up (or down)  and move the quote to before the empty line. . .
  • Use the Edit link to make changes to a completed post or add information to your post if it is the most recent (to avoid double posting)
    • Quote buttons will still send a quote to "Reply" if you have a post open for edit, but it is easy to cut/paste the quote to the Edit box
    • Editing the first post in a thread allows the thread-creator to edit the thread title.
    • Editing allows you to add a reason for the edit (Spelling and grammar (SPAG), formatting, clarification, new information, etc.), but it is not required.
  • Next to Edit you will also find an "options" dropbox, you can use this to hide your post if you want to remove it after posting
  • At the top of a post you will find "Report Post"
    • Use this if you do accidentally double-post (sometimes it's the browser or a slow link that causes a double post) - just leave a message that it was an accidental double post and the Mods can fix it. If it was the first post of a new thread that doubled, they usually can merge the threads if they both have answers, so all of the content is retained.

Hope that helps.

If you need Reading Order Suggestions, there are a number of posts, like this one. You may also consider one or two reading order fields (Internal series order: Way of Kings 1, Words of Radiance 2, Edgedancer 2.5, etc) and possibly an all-Cosmere reading order.

You may also consider notations in your database for Spoiler Alerts (such as Mistborn: Secret History contains spoilers for Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages and Bands of Mourning). In Tags, you generally have the planet, But for Elantris you put "Selish" (the Planet is Sel, somebody from Sel is Selish - just as a Scadrian is from Scadrial or Rosharan is from Roshar).

You may also want to add System tags for if/when we have stories from different planets in the same System (e.g. Ashyn is in the Rosharan System with Roshar and Braize).

White Sand also now has an Omnibus Edition (with minor fixes) and there is the unpublished Prose version you can acquire by joining Sanderson's Newsletter. Also, it may be outside the screenshot, but you seem to be missing the Secret Project books (SP1, 3, and 4).

In Collections you seem to only be recording type, do you also plan to record source (e. g. Shadows for Silence was first published in the Anthology "Dangerous Women")? "Saga" seems to be recording the "Source" since you have, for example, Hope of Elantris tied to Arcanum Unbounded (the source) instead of Elantris (to which it is tied).

Hope that helps and let us know if you have any further (spoiler free) questions

Wow, Thank you so much for that feedback, Treamayne! I will digest your post and refine the database based on that input.

Originally, I meant to create this primarily to keep track of what I've read and what I need to read, but those refinements sound like they can make for a much more robust database! There are some very amazing and impressive tools out there to track connections and such, so I don't see this being any more than a "checklist" of books. (But perhaps I should share it with people who are starting their Cosmere journey, not with a bunch of experts on the 17th Shard forum!)

Thank you for this feedback; this has me questioning my logic for the column headers. Originally, I wanted "Saga" to be what series the book is from, which might be a better label.

I also explained in the Column Definitions that I’ve decided to track the novellas/short stories that appear in “Arcanum Unbounded” separately but also included the novel form as an entry. This is just a preference; I intended this to be a general template to get my friend (or anyone who needed something like this) started, so I added both options - one to track granularly (down to individual short stories/novellas) or to reduce clutter, just tracking "Arcanum Unbound" as one novel. Probably very confusing, but I wanted to include both options.

This is a great suggestion! I originally intended this to just track what I owned (in my "Collection") but I'll look into this when I learn more!

I've read all of Stormlight + Novellas, Mistborn Era 1 and Era 2 minus The Lost Metal, Warbreaker, and Tress of the Emerald Sea. I've got Elantris on my desk right now and Arcanum Unbound on the way and looking forward to getting through all of it soon.

Appreciate the feedback and aloha!
