Question

Posted (edited)

So I was reading a WoB (I keep trying but I can’t find it) that said if properly commanded a lifeless could tap a metal mind I also remember reading another one where it said if someone who had an invested ability and made into a lifeless they would still have that ability

so here is what I want to know if a full born decides to compound all of the mental and spiritual metal minds and then died and somebody found their body mad them a lifeless and told them to tap their old metal minds and then do whatever they want would they just be the person they were before they died

maybe if they were all unkeyed and made into medallions you could give it to another lifeless and then if they tapped it would be the same same

but either way do you think if they were about to bleed out and they tapped gold would their original blood grow back or would it be ichor alcohol that grew back

edit sorry it glitched out and posted twice

WoBs you are mentioning:

Spoiler

AndyGranny

If you used a Lifeless body, would a Lifeless be able to access an untapped metalmind...

Brandon Sanderson

An unkeyed type of metalmind?

AndyGranny

Thank you, I could not think of that word. Would they be able to access an unkeyed metalmind if the intent when the Lifeless was created, if the intent was that they could...

Brandon Sanderson

Right, I see what you're getting at. Yes, they could. As they could access and use any tool that is appropriate for what they're Commanded to do, they could indeed access a metalmind in the same way.

In fact, doing so may, depending on the metalmind, be dangerous for keeping your Lifeless a Lifeless.

But a Mistborn turned into a Lifeless won't have his Mistborn powers anymore.

Can a Mistborn turned into a Lifeless still use Allomancy?

Brandon Sanderson

*long-ish pause* Uh, no.

So I would assume that is the same for a Feruchemist?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah if you-- taking some-- Yeah.  No they can't.

That's likely because a Lifeless doesn't have the identity and a spirit web that he used to have while being alive. His soul is replaced with a Breath and identity comes from it as well, and partially from a body.

If Bob the Awakener Awakened fifty straw men to dance around, then died, then Returned as FormerBob the Appropriately Named, would FormerBob be able to reclaim the Breath from the straw men in the normal fashion (once he learned the "Your Breath to Mine" Command)?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes. He has enough of his original Identity, and the spiritual connection would remain.

sonofstannis

What if he instead were reincarnated as a lifeless? Is there a way he could reclaim it then?

Brandon Sanderson

Lifeless have someone else's investiture replacing their own. (As opposed to Returned, who are augmented.) Depends on how much of them is left, and if they can achieve sapience again, but I'd say this is unlikely.

WeiryWriter

What if the Lifeless is Awakened with their own Breath? (i.e. they gave it away right before they died and the person they gave it to then used it in the Awakening)

Brandon Sanderson

This has happened already in the world, and it does help.

-Nayrb

Did this happen "on screen"?

Brandon Sanderson

RAFO.

If Fullborn's metalminds were unsealed (medallions), they can access that as a Lifeless. If not, they can't per WoB above.

Unkeyed means without identity, but still only a Feruchemist of that metal can use of. Unsealed is usable by anyone, that's Malwish medallion. So medallions are yes for a Lifeless, unkeyed no, because Lifeless is no longer a Feruchemist.

That's a good question. I think it depends on how self-aware is a Lifeless and if he consider alcohol to be part of him or blood.

I found this WOB regarding Invested ability, which might help with the first half of your question.

However, as per this WOB they can be Commanded to use unkeyed metalminds, and he implies something pretty heavily about the metalmind type.

Therefore, I feel like your assumption is correct. If the Lifeless in question was able to fill themselves with more Investiture, they'd eventually become self-aware (this can be seen in Clod, as the amount of Breath he has increased his self-awareness). The final result would likely be something like a Cognitive Shadow of the original personality - a copy of the original soul.

I don't know if that would change their physicality to get their blood back though, as their Cognitive Identity might be linked to being a Lifeless. They're kind of like Shaod Elantrians, in that they're spiritual stunted. Hard to say; I leave it to more skilled cosmerenauts to give their thoughts.

Anyway, hope that helps!
