"There were several other options. Let me kill you. Let me take TAAron. Instead, you kill a man. For what? A delay?"

"To save my own life. Or do you not agree that self-preservation is a worthy goal?"

"Well, his life arguably had more value than yours does. Not that I cared about the man, but it is something for you to consider. And to answer your earlier question, no. I don't think I will be leaving you alone."

"Terribly sad to hear that. I suppose I'll just have to tie TAAron up and gag him until we get him all healed up."

“Um, maybe we not do that,” Haly suggested. “There’s gotta be another option.”

“I dunno. Maybe there’s not. That just doesn’t strike me as very nice.”

“That’s not how it works, Evalyn,” Sykel sighed. “You do what you have to to reach your end goal. It’s that simple.”

"I mean, we could just talk to the evil god intent on killing us all and leave him fully able to move for the entirety of our trip through this potentially extremely hazardous tower, but that wouldn't be great. So unless you have some way to banish Malum's influence, I can't think of any better options."

Sykel tossed him some rope.

Haly grumbled. “Fine. Maybe you’re right. Still makes me mad though. Do we really need a gag, though?”

"I suppose not. As long as he isn't too insulting." Nameless ignored the rope, using weaves of air to restrain TAAron's arms. "I can tie them off so that even if I am knocked unconscious, the weaves remain in place."

"I agree with your sister. One ought not to give up on their goals." His smile turned menacing in a way that was very unusual to see on TAAron's face.

"He probably is right. I have a pretty decent grip on your friend here. I've had him since... well, since our little conversation before entering the tower."

Nameless gagged TAAron with a weave before he could say anything else. "He's obviously lying."

Sykel raised her eyebrows, appreciative of Malum’s affirmation.

Haly swallowed and bit her tongue.

"Look. Every time he's taken control, we've been able to tell. If he was controlling TAAron that whole time, you think he'd just tell us? He would use that to his own advantage, stab us when our backs were turned. You agree, right Lerac?"

He laughed. Then, his eyes changed from frighteningly gleeful to shocked and confused. TAAron squirmed in his bindings, giving a muffled cry.

Lerac shook his head solemnly. "He did say that he couldn't attack you, didn't he?"

"I don't think that's a good idea. In all likelihood, Malum will just take him over again, and say even more terrible things to you. I don't want him just messing with all of our heads like that."

TAAron stopped struggling, breathing hard and fast. He looked up at the group, expression tinged with betrayal.

"Sorry TAAron, if it is you, but we have to keep you restrained. Malum could take you over at any time, and he seems intent on messing with Haly's head."

She balled her hands into fists. “I’m fine! Let him GO!”

”I think you should listen to her,” Sykel drawled. “For the record.”

“It’ll help him.” She walked over, and for some unobtainable reason, felt… disappointed that he’d given in. Something in her circled, brooding in the disappointment.

That’s not right.
