Power Scaling?

13 members have voted

  1. 1. How should the power levels scale?

    • We're all weak witchlets just barely drawing our first magic circles
    • Accomplished witchlets, probably with palismans and everything
    • Fully-fledged warriors and witches
    • Beyond what the show does - we'd be kinda adult-ifying it
    • Literal. Freaking. Anime.

I asked around a bit, and turns out people would be interested in this kind of thing.

An Owl House RP! Probably not actually featuring the Owl House itself, of course, but still. We'd all be witches/demons/etc. going about our lives in the Boiling Isles, using our cool magical skills for EPIC ANIME BATTLES. It'd be during the (mostly) uneventful reign of Emperor Belos, so the coven system would be in full force the kingdom over. That said, you don't HAVE to be part of a coven - but we should probably keep things somewhat balanced.

(Says me, the guy whose characters are just power dynamics)

Anyways, here's the stuff that'll be important for the RP:

Spoiler

Your Race:

There are a couple very prevalent races, with a few others here and there to spice things up.

  • Witches: Apparently that's the name of the species! Elves are completley seperate, according to the wiki page. Almost all the primary characters in the series are witches, featuring pointy ears and magical bile sacs from whence they draw their power. Some of them sport non-humanoid traits, include demon-ish stuffs (like Eda's fang and Steve's horn). If you want to run amuck with magical powers, this is your best option.
  • Demons: I'm PRETTY dang sure that pretty much every non-witch creature on the Boiling Isles was a "demon," though some episodes seem to suggest otherwise...? Whatever. We'll go with what's canon. Thanks to Hooty, we're all aware of the three types of demons that you can be:
    • Bug: Most prevalent are the fire bees, fairies, and also whatever the heck Hooty is! Presumably they communicate through dance.
    • Biped: These are the closest to humanoid as demons get. Most are sentient, intelligent, and some can even develop magical bile sacs. Tibbles and Kikimora are both prime examples of this.
    • Beast: There's actually an entire coven dedicated to "mastering' these, meaning they're essentially the regular monsters and animals of the world. Rat worms and giraffes are great examples.
    • Basilisk...?: It's intentionally unclear what the deal is here. Unless you have a pretty solid understanding/theory on how they work, I wouldn't play as one.
  • Palismen: Are officially a race! I wouldn't recommend playing one. Seems like it'd be decently boring to be the cool animal sidekick that can transform into a magical stick.
  • Titan: No, you are not allowed to be a titan.

Your Magic:

Assuming you're playing a magical creature, then you likely specialize in just one or two forms of magic. If you're fully-grown, then chances are you've been inducted into a coven (sigil and all), meaning you're stuck with just one. was thinking we could play outlaws and bounty hunters and the like, so this is super necessary; but I don't think we should have any Edaline's in here just for continuity.

  • Abomination: Essentially conjuring, but kinda exclusively for big purple goop things. It's compatible with lots of other things, which could be fun for the alchemist types.
  • Bard: You cause magical things to... happen. This is a very manipulative form of magic, changing up the chemistry of the world around you. You can't really throw fireballs at people with it or anything, but you can induce sleepiness or brainwashing or something.
  • Beast Keeping: Essentially, you're a magizoologist. Apparently this means that you can not only control beasts, but also summon them (which is cool) or even manifest bestial traits (which is even cooler!)
  • Construction: ...Pretty sure this is just earthbending. And also you're REALLY strong.
  • Healing: *Ahem*
  • Illusions: *Ahem*
  • Oracle: Prooooobably the vaguest magic we have in the series. I guess this is where prophecies and such come from. Does telling the future mean that it can't be changed? IS FREE WILL A LIE??? More functionally, though, it gives you cool psychological powers. Telepathy and teleportation are just some of the cool powers you can get from this!
  • Plant: Like beast keeping, but for things that generally can't do anything actively. The show doesn't really show much more to this than Willow wrapping people up in spiky vines, but you could probably paralyze people with spores or some other cool stuff like that.
  • Potions: To keep with the theme of "magical powers" here, I'm going to say that some potions require spells and incantations to prime. It's notable that it's difficult to gather ingredients without magic, which means that people in the potions coven have....... what, like specialized spells from other covens? For ingredient-gathering? I dunno, man.
  • Emperor's: You get all the powers! Woohoo. It also means you're a law-abiding citizen, so... less woohoo.

It kinda seems like some magic is available to anyone? At the very least, I don't think fire and ice spells directly fit into any of the nine (ten but actually not really) above. That said, I'm not going to stop anyone from using some basic cantrip-style stuff if they've already been inducted into a coven.

Also also, there are sub-covens. I don't think they have sigils (if for any reason other than that Bellows probably doesn't have a magic seal glove for the Small Cat Coven, the Smaller Cat Coven, AND the Smallest Cat Coven), and most are likely subsets of the main nine. Therefore, whichever mini-coven you're in is probably going to be little more than flavor.

The Power Scaling:

I made a poll. It... doesn't really cover everything.

Basically, I'm trying to find a median power level. Some people can be more powerful, others can be less; etc etc. Y'all know that I love me an overpowered anime guy, but I'm not just going to drop one into an RP where everyone else is trying to stick to a normal ability level. That said, just kind of think of how powerful your character is likely to be and vote for that. We can average from there.

Oh also here's a character sheet:

Spoiler

Name: Calano Suvroc

Race: Witch (fine ill choose a basic race)

Primary Magic: Plant (i am making a plant based magic system sooooo it only makes sense)
Coven: Emperor's (but a bit rebellious like. i abide by the law!! mostly...)

Appearance: (how tall do witches get...?) 5'11 male witch with really curly (literally a birds nest) dark hair. Wears a t-shirt (bought from some suspicious overexcited white haired old lady) on the front of which is shown a strange crest with a stylized red S in the middle. idk regular pants??? (wtf do witches WEAR bro idfk) and shoes???? (again idfk) (ok just picture ME, but pointy ears and curlier darker hair boom done)

Backstory: mans was born to some parents, lived thru life ig, and then went to school (Hexside supremacy :D) where he kissed a guy and found it was kinda cool. didn't think he was fully gay but also not bi so he's settled on pan, after much internal deliberation and sleepless nights. his dad knows, but his mom would kill him. Spoiler

Name: Cricket

Race: Demon (Biped)

Primary Magic: Oracle
Coven: Unaffiliated

Appearance: These drawings are the WORST THINGS I HAVE EVER MADE

Spoiler

Cricket.jpeg.ac9a51a8fe48ae141f4c91ff934c7770.jpeg

62d0e84a49708_Cricket(1).jpeg.2de27285ff1931aeceac1e94170721f4.jpeg

She's a mishmash of several nocturnal creatures. Most of her body is akin to a badger's, but she sports a scorpion tail as her hair and a moth as her palisman (his name's Tiger). The outside of her cape-wing matches the sky on a normal day, covering almost all of her body whenever she's not doing anything with her arms. On the inside it's black as the night sky, featuring pinpricks of white (not featured in the drawing because my pencils aren't that good). The red dots on her face are extra eyes.

Personality: Generally pretty quiet. She doesn't say things that aren't really necessary to say. Usually her face can tell you what she's thinking without her voice coming into play.
Backstory: Raised by two witches who found her on the coast one day. They only had one other child: a nice witch boy named Kinley. He preceded her by a year at Hexside, going into Beast Keeping as a result of growing up with a demon sister. The two of them always liked playing games and going on adventures together. Now, he's off studying from the Emperor's Coven; she, on the other hand, became one of the best bounty hunters the Boiling Isles had ever seen.

Quirks: She does, in fact, glow under a black light.
Other Skills: Brews a mean apple blood. Quite adept at several weapons, but only to the extent that they work in a pinch if she can't use her magic for some reason.

LET'S SCUDDING GOOOOOOOOOOOO

Spoiler

Spoiler

Name: Kora
Race: Witch
Primary Magic: he uses his banjo, his flute, and his voice to do, uh, a whole lot of stuff.
Coven: unaffiliated, though he intends to join the Bard coven when he graduates Hexside in a few months.
Appearance:

Spoiler

20220715_084216.thumb.jpg.71a7b9653d6472395df2ee7f6048519b.jpg

(5'9, pale skin, purple eyes, bright pink hair to a little above his shoulders, has a big gap in between his front teeth. He wears his hexside uniform (red, as he's studying to be a bard) and some ugly purple boots he got from his mother, Dolores, that are supposed to be enchanted to keep him from tripping (which he does a lot) but have not seemed to help so far.)
Personality: Kora's loud when he's in an environment he likes, but can get pretty quiet. Cannot focus for the life of him. Friendly, but can get heated if he disagrees with you. He *will* hold a grudge. I don't know if ADD is a thing on the boiling isles, but if so, he has it. He's good at debating and getting his point across (his dad calls it back-talking, but still encourages Kora to refine that skill). Likes music a lot (duh, he's a bard).
Backstory: Kora is afab (trans) and had an otherwise pretty normal childhood. His parents- Dolores and Briar- own a tea shop  in the city. Dolores is from the plant coven and Briar is from the healing coven, so they can make some really weird medicinal teas together. They were supportive of Kora when he came out (obvie, it's the boiling isles lmao) and were pretty much good parents, if on the stricter side. He has no siblings, but his parents have a cat (beast, has wings and coughs up fire instead of hairballs, named Cinder) whom he treats like a sibling. He has a girlfriend- Cassandra- whom he loves very much and who intends to join the Oracle coven when she graduates. He possess his Grandfather's pailsman, named Batlebee. Here it is:

Quirks: enjoys sewing mischeif. And also needle point. Dislikes loud noises unless he is the one making them.
Other Skills: can use a dagger pretty well, but just for fun, as he mostly relies on his magic for any sort of confrontation. Good at drawing.

Don't you mean three witches/demons?

Also, i made Cassandra :D drawing in the owl house style is super fun.

She's kind of quirky and is quite smart. She does illusion magic on the side but her main focus is oracle magic, and she's good at divination via crystal ball. Cass doesn't have a palisman, but doesn't feel like she needs one to magnify her magic. She also does archery for fun.

Wait, are we allowed to do this for side characters?

Fixed it lol (and also said she does illusion instead of abomination cause i got the colors wrong ;-;

also lmao "bellows"
Anyways, Character:

Spoiler

Name: Tevak Tevur

Race: Witch

Primary Magic: Potions

Coven: Potions

Appearance: A rather short witch with pure black hair cut short, green eyes and light purplish skin, he almost always wears a pair of safety goggles and a white trench coat that he had enchanted to have far more room for his various ingredients, brewing equipment, and potion bottles.

Personality: A practical person a vast majority of the time (especially after graduation), Tevak has all the best qualities of a proper potionbrewer; patience, a sharp eye, and most importantly, a fine intuition for how things work and interact. Mostly he uses these talents to further his career, think of new potion combinations, and occasionally getting out of scrapes caused by ingredient acquisition,  but sometimes he sees an opportunity for trouble and simply cannot help himself but to exploit it, usually to spectacular effect.

Backstory: Coming from a well-off family in Bonesborough, Tevak attended Hexside and likely could've hit top of his class in Potions if not for his penchant for mischief and certain... unorthodox techniques regarding the art of potionmaking. Still, he graduated last year and got his sigil for the Potions Coven and now acts as a freelance potion-brewer, making all sorts of brews and mixes for anyone who pays. Doesn't really believe in Belos' preachings about wild magic but has such a passion for potions that it really doesn't bother him that he can't do other forms of magic (and trying to get out of getting a sigil would've been more trouble than it was worth, in his mind).

Quirks: If you look closely enough, certain patches of his skin roil and vibrate strangely. Don't spill an animating potion on yourself, kids.

Other Skills: Perhaps as a result of his knowledge of potions, he's an incredibly good cook as well, and also a certified spoondueler.

GAMING TIME!!!!!

Calano Suvroc, who went by Suv around his friends- At least, he would if he had friends- fidgeted with his Coven Scout mask as he loitered around Hexside academy.

He was bored.

Exceptionally.

Which is saying something, considering he was insanely lucky to be a part of the Emperor's Coven at such a young age.

He sighed, loudly.

"That's it!" Gardavie tossed his staff onto the ground, growling like some kind of cornered dog. "I'm not losing another eye to your stupid gang, blasted Nighthunter!"

Cricket clenched her claws into a fist, digging into her wrist. "Fine, then. You weren't any help to us anyways."

The argan blinked twice, his entire body flickering as the dozen or so remaining eyelids snapped open wide. "Why--you little--" He drew his sword.

Oh. Well. Cricket crouched a little, staring up at the massive demon. This isn't good.

are there swords on the isles????? WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN????

Suv slammed his foot into the ground, and a small vine with a flower at the top sprang up. It's petals suddenly became covered in dew, before they fell off and fluttered away in the breeze.

It's gonna rain soon... Best be getting back to HQ.

He tapped the patterned wooden bracelet on his wrist, and it uncoiled, turning into a snake. His palisman, Alix. Alix lengthened, turning into a mode of transportation, and Suv boarded and flew away.

Whilst flying over the town, he heard a deep voice shout "Why--you little--"

He slowed down, and went towards the voice to investigate. This was his job after all.

There was a sword in the first episode

Why hadn't she brought her crystal ball? That would've made all this a cake walk.

Cricket huffed, bringing her arms around to where Tiger hid in her cloak. "Listen, Gard. I can still get you fifty percent if you just calm down."

"Fifty? Gimme all of it! In fact, double your price, titan curse it! I've lost more eyes to you than I have to my girlfriend!"

That was it. There was maybe ten seconds before he started raging.

By the titan... what a day...

I haven't seen the first ep in a while ok????

Once the wind calmed down, Suv could make out more words

"...more eyes to you than I have to my girlfriend!"

And... yeah that sounded like a scuffle.

He landed nearby, coiling Alix around his wrist again, before whistling cheerily and walking over. He rounded the corner and saw a small beetle-like demon, and a massive argan towering over.

Oi. This was gonna be something.

"Something going on here?" Suv asked cheerily. Perhaps too cheerily, but what the Titan, he had a sassy streak.

Posted

"You sure? Looks like this here Argan is being frustrating. I could take care of it for you."

Suv smiled beneath his mask, and made a small circle in the air with his finger. A vine sprouted and immediately wrapped around the ankle of the argan.

"Just a flick of the wrist."

Posted

"Oi!" Gardavie glared daggers at the guard. "You let me go now, rat!"

Cricket raised an eyebrow. This could be interesting.

Under her cloak, she drew a quick circle, casting an invisible blade at the root of vine. It severed, letting the argan kick free.

"Uh-oh." She said, decidedly not convincingly.

Roaring in anger, Gardavie charged the guard with his sword.

Posted

Oh Titan.

Suv dodged to the side, but the Argans blade nicked his arm. He hissed in pain, and rolled to the side. Casting a quick spell, he wrapped the argan in thick, thorny vines.

Posted

The argan laughed. It sounded similar to a bird's squawk.

"You think that'll stop me, coven scum?" Gardavie grunted, pushing out against the vines. The outer edges began to fray.

Cricket tried to catch the guard's eye. "Hey. Need some help?"

Posted

Cricket burst out of her cloak, Tiger warping into the end of her palisman staff. She spun it from the middle in a wide circle, etching a blue ring in the air. A shockwave of invisible force washed over the argan, knocking him onto his face.

Posted

Suv hurriedly got to his feet, and using both hands, created a medium sized circle. Vines grew like ropes thrown by vikings around a great beast, and wrapped around the argan, securing him to the ground.

"You could have led with that," Huffed Suv.
