Could someone explain the whole Andonalsium thing?

What/who are the Shards, what does Hoid have to do with anything (or why does Hoid get involved in everything), what are all the planets...basically, how does the Cosmere work?

If you've read all the books or don't care about spoilers, Coppermind (a link to which is on the blue bar at the top of the page) has information about this kind of thing. In particular, the Adonalsium page, the Shard page, and the Cosmere page should answer this question better than I can.
