Channelknight Fadran Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 (edited) So I've been writing the backstory for a cool RP character of mine (Ayia, if you're in the know), and a little while back it came to my attention that I had no idea how her powers worked. For those of y'all who don't know, Ayia's got these metal staffs that she can "Stabilize" to hold them into any position, whether that be setting them perfectly upright, floating in midair, or shoved into someone's face. She's got a few other things--a magical cable that she can yeet at things and ride across, and a bracelet that maintains a small pocket dimension--but the staffs are her primary tool. Anyways, those weren't exactly well-developed, and now I'm paying for it. After much consideration, I'd decided that her powers (as well as the other wizards in her world) would have the ability to enchant items with magical properties. This would be via some hard, logical, almost mathematical sequences: I'm thinking full-on equations scrawled through spellbooks and magic circles inlaid with runes. Here's the problem: Writing-wise, I can go from there. Throwing some vague this-and-that into the mix would certainly make it plottable. However, I'm an overachiever and really want to come up with a system that I could actually map out. Basically, I want to be able to calculate any possible magical item myself. So... Frustration Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 (edited) I recommend the second law of Magic systems. What do you want the magic to NOT be able to do? Edited February 21, 2022 by Frustration
Channelknight Fadran Posted February 21, 2022 Author Posted February 21, 2022 Nothing. Absolutely scudding nothing. The only limitation is amount of sheer mathematical willpower someone can pour into it.
Frustration Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 Well that makes things complicated. ... or maybe not. You could just steal physics. Flow chart time. Pick a fundemental force, or prossess (Strong/weak nulcear force, Electromagnetism, Gravity, Higgs feild, transfer of energy, time, space etc) select a target write out how you want the magic to be preformed, i.e. take this, give it a magnetic feild, or multiply it's gravity by -2, or so forth. Does that work?
Channelknight Fadran Posted February 21, 2022 Author Posted February 21, 2022 I started there... but I really want to create my own logical system. My current hope is to make a trinary system (binary, but t h r e e). It'd be +1/0/-1 (or sorts), but I don't know how to incorporate that into... literally anything.

Would assigning each force a designation work? Gravity 00-1, time 000, Electromagnetism 001 etc
Channelknight Fadran Posted February 21, 2022 Author Posted February 21, 2022 Potentially. But I'm worried that makes it too OP
Frustration Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 Just now, Channelknight Fadran said: Potentially. But I'm worried that makes it too OP I have an idea, but be forwarned if you want to try this ALL of your free time will be gone. Spoiler Each Trinary sequence, (However long you want that to be) contains three variables per force The force modifier is the strength of the force relative to normal, so if gravity is 200 the gravitational pull of that object will be increased by 200 The weight modifier is the order the forces take place, so all forces with a weight of 2 will take precident over all forces with a weight of 1. So if you have two gravity modifiers whichever one has the higher weight takes precident. Third is duration, which is for how long it lasts.
