Short Story: Hunting
*Note* So, uh, I realize I haven't posted in a while. I keep starting stories and not finishing them. This one is an idea that has been growing in my mind for a while, and finally I just wrote it out. Obviously it makes sense to me, and all that, but I don't know how it sounds to other people, so comments would be greatly appreciated. *End Note*
Hunting
“855, this is Saka speaking, how may I help you?”
“Yes, hello,” Ensha said slowly, drumming his fingers on the table as he talked into the microchip. “My name is Ensha Keal, and I would like to finish applying for my hunt license.”
“Ah, yes. Let me just get your records…” There came a few sounds, almost like typing. That made sense, as the files were kept on the computer. Ensha quickly checked his watch, hoping not for the first time that they would hurry up. Otherwise he would have to set everything up again, and that would be a pain.
“Alright then, I just have a few questions to ask before you’re good to go!” the woman said, sounding overly cheery.
“Okay,” Ensha said when she didn’t elaborate. “What are they?”
“Question one: Have you finished the forms?”
“Of course,” Ensha huffed frustratedly. “How else would I be on the computer?” He hefted the rifle onto his shoulder, fidgeting with the trigger. It was loaded, but not cocked, so he was fine for the time being.
“Oh! My bad! Question two: Is this your first hunt license?”
“No,” Ensha griped. “Can’t you see that? I’ve had two other hunt licenses, one in 2346, and one in 2350.”
“Okay, okay. Goodness. Patience is a virtue!” Saka remarked, sounding annoyed. Ensha, in retaliation, aimed the rifle at the microchip, pretending it was her head. “Hurry this up,” he bit through gritted teeth. “I’m almost out of time.”
“Fine. There’s just two more questions. Are you absolutely certain that this is the best course of action?”
“Yes,” Ensha said giddily, cocking his rifle. “Now put it into the computer so that I won’t get arrested.”
“Last question,” Saka said, typing something on the computer. “Has your target been notified and given the proper two week time frame to prepare?”
“YES!” Ensha shouted. “HURRY UP!”
“Alrighty then.” A green light flashed out from Ensha’s microchip. “You have now gained the license for the hunting and killing of President Heye. Happy hunting!” The line disconnected, and Ensha dropped to one knee.
Balancing the barrel of the rifle on the edge of the rooftop, he aimed right next to the podium where President Heye was speaking. Taking a deep breath, he braced himself and pressed the trigger.
Bang.
The shot rang out around the city, heard by almost all. Heye slumped over, dead in an instant.
Chaos erupted as people began searching for the killer. Ensha ran to the streets, leaving the rifle behind.
“You’re welcome!” he shouted, raising his hands in the air triumphantly. A few police officers ran over to his side, but he just let them scan his microchip.
“He’s clear,” one said. The people slowly dispersed. They couldn’t do anything, and they knew it.
“Aren’t you worried someone is going to take up a license against you?” one of the people asked Ensha. Ensha smiled and shook his head. “Nah. Because then they’d have to go up against me.”
As people slowly walked away, Ensha looked back to where the president lay, dead. He had just assassinated one of the most influential people in the world.
Just a normal day in the life of a Hunter.
All was well.
