  1. I’ve been rereading the Cosmere recently, and while I read Hero of Ages, I started to think. Some of the issues those characters face is the fact that the mist is staying for longer and longer, and soon there will be no more daylight for plants to grow. The characters seemed very worried about this, with good reason, but I find a solution pretty easy. Mist cannot enter buildings so why not build a greenhouse for plants to grow in. I’m not sure how tall this building would need to be, but it’s only as tall as a Mistborn can Push on a coin before the link is almost gone. This greenhouse would also remove the extreme labor needed to remove ash from crop fields. While this would certainly be challenging, I am certain that the might of the New Empire could achieve this task. I recognize that perhaps there were bigger issues going on at the time, but I almost wonder if they had just focused on food generation and building as many greenhouses as possible, they might have had some success. Of course the gathering Koloss army would just kill everyone anyway. What do we think of this idea for stopping the mists? Anyone have any better ideas? This is my first post here so I’m sorry if anything is wrong or odd.
  2. A bunch of semi-related questions: Does Investiture have some sort of issue with dwellings? Why did the Mists evaporate when entering a tent or a building? Why do spheres have to be hung out in the Highstorm in order to be infused? Is there a boundary at the window, or could spheres sitting just inside an open door on the leeward size be infused? Does a bit of canvas or a wall really prevent Investiture from the Spiritual Realm seeping through to permeate spheres and people, or is it because this Investiture is locked in the Physical Realm and cannot pass through even something that thin? Why was it that Dalinar could enter Urithiru but the Stormfather could not?
  3. So happy to find this site. Really enjoy Sanderson's work. And spent a long time drawing/painting this watercolour pencil picture. If you look closely, there's Vin knelt on a rooftop. Thought some of you peeps may like it. I already shared this with the wonderful individual who shared the books with me in the first place. And I feel a continuous appreciation that the person shared this book with me. It's what pulled me imagination first right into this fascinating beautiful place that I now know as the cosmere! How did you guys first stumble into the cosmere? Which portal drew you in? Kind regards Velendsazed

  6. Specifically, since they're so similar could they be used by each others magical systems without using magical hacks?
  7. I've been googling this question all morning, nothing online...so far. Well of Ascension near the end. Vin just slaughtered Straff on his horse, meanwhile at Cett's camp he is taunted by his daughter to help Luthadel, not Straff. Cett ponders why he thought he could seize Luthadel with no Allomancers, then he says this: "Or was it because I was looking for something, a confirmation of the stories, a power like I saw on that night when the air almost killed me." This piqued my interest suddenly. Was Cett snapped by the mist? No, surely he hasn't cowered indoors his whole life like a skaa. I thought about the Mist Spirit aka Preservation. Did Preservation stab Cett? No, he wants stasis, balance, he wouldn't even stab Elend without another spirit forcing him to. But wait, didn't Alendi's party suffer a stab wound on the way to the Well? Perhaps he could attack after all. Did Ruin stab Cett? Could he? All people aid Ruin even if they don't mean to, so why "nearly kill" a pawn in his game. Or, did Preservation's original millennial plan to bring about the Hero of Ages "need" Cett stabbed to coerce him to seize Luthadel and set in motion all the pieces and events needed? Any thoughts? Sorry if this question has been asked and answered, as I said...been googling all morning. Sorry about the stream of consciousness gab earlier. What was Brandon Sanderson referring to with that sentence?
  8. We have a WOB that lersium is present in mist but it is in so small amount that it can not be noticed. But with scientific advances on scardial , it is possible to separate lerasium from the mist. Although the mists are very rare after the final accession , There is still mention of two types of mists on scardial . It is much easier than tracing the bloodlines of Lord mistborn . Any thoughts on this ? Its also possible that atium is present in the other kind of mist.
  9. Ruin and Preservation investiture as a Source of Feruchemy Hi everyone! This is my theory about the Feruchemy's development on the people of Scadrial, or at least on the Terris People. The key to this Metallic Art (for me) is the Atium or to be more precise, the Ruin's Investiture. But first of all, a little backgrond on the Feruchemy: The Feruchemy was the only of the Metallic Arts to be widespread before the Rashek’s Ascension. And from the beginning of the Books seems to be “only” a genetic ability of the Terris People. After this short introduction, I could begin with the theoretical part of my theory: Feruchemy is a manifestation of Investiture of Scadrial, from Preservation and Ruin using the Scadrial’s Focus. The metals. The Feruchemy is an art of balance between the two shards, therefore the two types of Investiture in the Human Beings is very important to access to this Metallic Art. The Scadrial’s Humans has both Preservation and Ruin Investiture but the first is greater. The Humans may develop Feruchemy by changing the amount of Preservation-Ruin Investiture thay have. An “easy” and praticable source of Ruin’s Investiture is the Atium. Now we come at the Core of the Theory: The Feruchemy could be “unlocked” by increasing the Ruin’s Investiture through eating Atium. (a piece of Atium very small compared to a bead of Atium I suppose). But at this point I am not sure about what the real requirements are, I have two plausible ideas and both of them have pros and contros. Balancing the powers: The Preservation Investiture and Ruin Investiture have to be very similar in quantity(percentage). Treeshold of the two powers: The Preservation Investiture must be at least X and Ruin Investiture must be at least X (more investiture of P or R is right too). Now I will explain the global pros and contros in the theory and after the individual pros and contros of the case a and b. Pro: The Feruchemy could be “gifted” to the Terris People by Preservation through the Terris Prophecy directing some “patriarchs” to the Pits and give manipulating them to obtain the Atium (we know that the Pits was in the Terris land). In a close system, the initial catalyst of Feruchemy would be preserved quite good (while they began to cross the bloodlines, the power faded). Contro: The Hoid’s Feruchemy isn't easy to explain with this idea. Now examine the individual pros and contros of the case a and b. Case a: Balancing the Powers. Pro: Preservation may created the Terris People with the minimun quantity of his power to make them sentient. Therefore with less (if none) Allomantic’s potential and with a lower treeshold to develop the Feruchemy by adding Ruin’s power. A not Scadrial Human (like Hoid) has an very very low treshoold (or null). A bit of Preservation and a bit of Ruin could be enough, Ruin could be obtained through Atium and Preservation by the Mist (He could trick the Mist to obtain at least a tiny Preservation’s Power not enough for the Allomancy) The “Allomancy’s gene and Feruchemy’s gene don’t mix well together” are very likely to the opposite requirement to expression itself. The Ruin’s powers needed to a “not Terrisman” could be to much and lethal. A feruchemist could be the “best holder” to both Preservation and Ruin together. Contro: Rashek had an huge Preservation’s Power and mantained his Feruchemy, but maybe once you had the power, you can’t lose for just unbalancing the Investiture. Case b: Treeshold of the two powers Pro: Fullborn has no problem to exist. The “Atium’s Misting test” could be try to find a new potential Feruchemist as a source of Spike. Contro: Every nobles could potentially be a Feruchemist by eating atium (The Atium is very rare and expansive, but I think Rashek used this way to obtain Spikes for the Inquisitors). Hoid’s Feruchemy are less likely than the case a. Future Implication: With the Harmony’s Ascension now Scadrial has 2 type of Mists one of Preservation an one of Ruin and a new “god alloy”. By this theory the Harmonium could be use to became a Allomancer or Feruchemist (case a) or a Fullborn (case B ) What do you think about this theory ?

  13. All righty, so I'm creating this thread to be a place to discuss gaseous investiture. This started due to a topic Moogle created regarding the Mists and metals in Allomancy, where he posed the following question: This led me to thinking about gaseous investiture as a whole, as each of the major magic systems in the Cosmere that we've been shown make some mention of it. So let me begin this by discussing what knowledge we currently have. What We Know Spoilered for length. I create this list above knowing full well that I may have made mistakes. I also ask that any observation you wish to be added to this list be accompanied by sources. I cited all of my observations that didn't come directly from the books, I'm pretty sure. I'm hoping this discussion can be mostly focused around textual evidence and WoB's, rather than baseless conjecture. Obviously baseless conjecture is allowed and often appreciated, though. Discussion I do hope this thread will involve discussion of all the forms of gaseous investiture, and not just one two, but Moogle originally wanted such a topic to discuss the Dor, so I will start this discussion there. My observations above all say that Elantrians are "holding" the Dor, but is it holding in the same sense that one can hold the Mists, or how one can hold Stormlight? I do think there is a difference. Such a difference would explain why Raoden feels like his old self upon completing the Shaod, rather than being filled with a torrential energy, such as Szeth and Vin observe. I do not, however, believe there is a way to "hold" more of the Dor than an Elantrian already does. Ignoring the fact that the Dor does not seem to occur naturally in the Physical Realm apart from leaking through Elantris and its denizens, if an Elantrian could intake more of the Dor, why has no one done it? As I noted, the Dor leaks from the city itself. Has no Elantrian taken a deep breath within their city? Or, if intent matters, are we to presume that there has never been an Elantrian to sigh in frustrastion, wishing they were more powerful? In a city such as Elantris, where they are so far advanced to possess a detailed library system, such a thing should have been documented. Of course, it is possible that Raoden's studying in the library never came across such a thing, and as a result we, as readers, have simply never been told about it. It could also be that the system is more selective, like the Mists, rather than not being selective, like Stormlight. We do not know much about such a thing, though that is my current position. As a final note, the description of holding "large" amounts of Breath comes from the prologue, and as such focuses on the abilities granted by the Heightenings. I can't currently search the entirety of the book to find other instances which might be more pertinent to the comparison at hand, but if someone could point me at least to a chapter to save myself time later it would be greatly appreciated.
  14. Hey 17th Sharders! What I would like to discuss today is the compatibility of the magical fuels (Stormlight, Breath, etc.) across the Cosmere. - I just finished rereading Hero of Ages and had this thought as I was reading Vin's fight scene with the Inquisitors, when she draws on the mists to fuel her Allomancy. Could Allomancers use other forms of power to fuel Allomancy? Say... Stormlight? - Here's an explanation on my reasoning: A Shard manifests itself in three ways, solid, liquid, and gaseous. Using Preservation as an example we have Lerasium beads (solid), the Well of Ascension (Liquid), and the Mists (gaseous). We already know that one gaseous form of power (Stormlight) can substitute for another (Breath) in Vasher/Zahel's case. What are your thoughts? What evidence have I missed that says either yea or nay to this theory?
