Sanderson-Savant Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 At the end of Words of Radiance, we learn that the oathgate in alethkar is Quote The dias upon which the palace and royal temple had been built on Furthermore, I believe that we have already seen the central "control room" of this fabrial in the book, more specifically the Circle of Memories that can be seen in the final interludes as part of the first perspective, Lhan, this room is described as: Quote A round room, with ten lamps on the wall, one for each of the anchient epoch kingdoms. An eleventh lamp represented the tranquille halls, and a large keyhole set into the wall... To me, this seems incredibly similar to what is found at Stormseat Quote The circular chamber, silently counting the divisions on the floor mural. There were ten main ones... between the segments representing the first and tenth kingdoms-was a narrower eleventh section... Even the lamps on the wall, which appeared to still held dum gemstones. On the wall, she found a metal disk set into the stone... The ten lamps faded like closing eyes. I believe that these two buildings are both oathgates, they both have atleast ten lamps on the wall, with the previous extract showing that this refers to stormlight based lamps. Furthermore both chambers are split into eleven, in kholinar the eleventh is believed to be the tranquille halls, in stormseat utithuru. However, the eleventh lamp in kholinar is a bit of an anomaly, I believe this could be simple ornamentation from the Alethi, or perhaps it has been added to oathgate as a means to lock it, as we know that all oathgates besides stormseat have been locked. Anyway, there is my theory, please tell me what you think 5
Pattern he/him Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 (edited) Spot on. The "lamp" in Kholinar is no anomaly, it's just misinterpreted by Vorin religion. Tranquiline Halls "lamp" = Urithiru "lamp". Actually "lamp" here is something like "fabrial gemstone-holder". The ten other positions stand for each Silver Kingdom, though I'd have to read the passages again, With ten Kingdoms plus Urithiru, each Oathgate just needs ten positions, transportation on "self" would be useless. Or just decorative. Edited December 30, 2016 by Pattern
Sanderson-Savant Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 I agree that each oathgate only needs ten "lamps", as we see at stormseat, which is why I was questioning why Kholinar has eleven
Genesis he/him Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 (edited) It could be that it indeed does have a segment for Kholinar in the 'Circle of memories' as we don't know 100% how the Fabrial works, if it actually transports the entire room and contents, (maybe swapping it with the room in Urithiru?) then it would require a segment for every Oathgate to function correctly, including it's starting location. Exalted Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Maybe the 11th lamp has been added by the Alethi in the years since the Oathgates fell out of use? Or maybe it actually has a purpose, and the Oathgate in Kholinar has special powers that we don't know about yet.

Kholinar & Stormseat (Emphasis added) Given that they both have eleven sections, is it so hard to assume that they might both have had eleven lamps at one point or another? 4 hours ago, Sanderson-Savant said: I believe this could be simple ornamentation from the Alethi, or perhaps it has been added to Oathgate as a means to lock it, as we know that all Oathgates besides Stormseat have been locked. I agree more with the idea that if Stormseat lacks this lamp, then it stands to reason that the others being locked is connected to this change. 4 hours ago, Pattern said: The "lamp" in Kholinar is no anomaly, it's just misinterpreted by Vorin religion. Personally, I don't think it is misinterpreted so much as "renamed." Given the intense dislike of Radiants after the Recreance, I would not be all that surprised at an attempt to have Urithiru expunged from public knowledge/record. Secondly, given just how rusting obsessed with 10 the Alethi are, adding an 11th lamp "for decorative purposes" just seems out of place for them. 1

You are totally right, I forgot about the whole plateau of Stormseat vanishing in WoR. To get it back to its position, it needs the "home-button", so 11 it is. Edited December 30, 2016 by Pattern 1

Sanderson-Savant Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 Yeah, I found the quote to support that Spoolofwhool Quote Kalladin caught a glimpse of the army on the plateau... ... Szeth standing on an empty plateau, baffled. The army was gone.
Pattern he/him Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 (edited) Yeah, seems like only people are transported. Some things made me think otherwise, but the fact that Shallan leaves Bridge 4 or part of it on the Shattered Plains to wait for Kaladin and returns to Urihiru, shows that the room stays there. After Kaladin is back, he uses the Oathgate himself and activates it with Sylblade. The eleventh lamp wil be a RAFO for Oathbringer then… Edited December 30, 2016 by Pattern
Brgst13 Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 I think that a previous poster was correct, the 11th section (home) is there as a locking mechanism. Perhaps you have to activate the fabrial with itself selected to unlock the gate prior to use.
Genesis he/him Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 (edited) Just a minor thing, but I think you are misinterpreting what I meant, in the example on the plains, The bridge four soldiers were outside the room (on the plateau) when shallan activated it, ergo, not within the fabrial, hence them being left behind when she returned to urithiru. What I'm suggesting is that it works similarly to how multiple cognitive entities can come to view themselves as a singular entity, The fabrial 'knows' what is part of it, and what is not, So the room itself is transported but anything outside of the confines of the room (like the rest of said plateau - and the bridge four members) stays put. Let me know what you think. ps. Please excuse any spelling errors or non capitalisation, I'm on my phone. Edited January 3, 2017 by genesisv1 Spelling

It may not even need to be activated, it's possible that if the fabrial is left with 'home' selected, it somehow isolates it from the gate-network? Just random speculation here, but just trying to throw ideas around Edit: does it actually mention where the 'keyhole' is positioned in the kholinar gate? It could give credence to my theory, or bust it! Edited January 3, 2017 by genesisv1
