  1. I doubt Mr T will end up being the one that saves the world. As Moogle has already pointed out, he goes against everything these books are about. He is the antithesis to Dalinar. I can see Dalinar's book being about the struggle between the two to lead humanity safely through the desolation. Dalinar going the journey before destination route and Mr T going the ends justify the means route.

You are right. How I phrased that did not actually communicate what I meant. What I meant is that the nightwatcher did grant Mr.T the opportunity to save a certain population from annihilation. However, there are more honorable and successful ways of saving more people if not the majority. Meaning the nightwatcher and the Diagram are correct, but on a lower scale. Sort of like the good, better, and best metaphor. The Diagram is an okay way of saving some people, but their is a best way, and the new "Knights Radiants" will find that way. (Hopefully....)

  2. Is that Syl and Kaladin in your signature? Awesome design man! Though I always pictured Syl as a translucent Tinker-bell for some reason.

Yes it is. :) I did not create the art, (Found it online) but I did make the signature and such. I love them.

When Sylphrenia "claims" Kaladin from the Stormfather in WOR,

I actually teared up. My favorite part so far for sure.

  3. I'm betting that the the plate comes after the blade in the progression, that's it's the physical manifestation of a full Radiants ability to hold and internally use Stormlight. Think about it - the benefits that Shardplate gives modern Shardbearers are basically the benefits of holding Stormlight, with the notable exception that when damaged, Stormlight will regrow the plate rather than the wearer. A surgebinder like Kaladin can take on a Shardbearer because he gets the same benefits. Eventually, he'll get so good at holding in Stormlight that he won't leak it, and it it will manifest instead as him wearing glowing plate.

I really like this. I think it makes sense and fits with my previous thoughts. I really think Shardplate comes from spren in some way. I think the spren creates it, but is not necessarily it like the blade.

  4. WoR spoilers (this should really be in the WoR subforum...)

Taravangian is a drooling idiot incapable of interacting with the world on his dumb days. Literally, he drools in his room and can't speak. This theory is interesting, but I haven't got the slightest clue why people attribute so much to compassion and think him drooling is his "capacity to save the world". He already had compassion; his hospitals prove this, and on his average days he still cries at the sorrow he's caused. Why would he need more? Is this some sort of hilarious joke by the Nightwatcher implying the best way to save the world is do nothing? That seems incredibly weird.

If this series is intended to be about exploring journey before destination (Brandon has implied this) and its opposite, making Taravangian wrong about what he's doing and having the entire Diagram be flawed from its inception or have it be sabotaged is an incredibly poor way to show the opposing view. The books don't refute the position at all in that case. Sort of like the Sword of Truth series, now that I think on it.

Knocking down strawmen is a poor way to argue for a view. The best way to explore an issue is to take the best arguments from both sides and battle those out. If Brandon wants to prove that the journey does matter more than the desintation, Taravangian should come close to succeeding or succeed outright, and then show that it wasn't worth it in the end.

    I think you are right.

I think Mr. T and the Diagram will save the world from the True Desolation. However, no one has said that his way is the only way to reach that goal. There can be many paths to an end, some more honorable than others.

  5. Like has been said before most likely he has children that were not mentioned that are in the camp or that are back at his kingdom.

Also, maybe they couldn't have kids. Maybe they didn't want kids. Sadeas really wasn't in the book much anyways. So I don't see much of a need for mentioning his heirs.

  6. I'm most intrigued by what would happen if Shallan left Ad for Kal and they managed a rocky but ultimately succesful relationship. That would destroy Adolin. Here he is, having said multiple times that what he wants most in the world is for a relationship to work out, and he's found the perfect girl, and she leaves him for his new best friend. Ouch. This also helps because BS has implied that Alodin has a future as a Dustbringer, but Spren don't take on people who haven't been broken.

Can I get the info you have on Brandon implying Adolin's future as a Dustbringer? I have heard that mentioned before but never read it myself.

I think you can argue Adolin is broken in a number of ways. Maybe not as bad as Shallan or Kaladin, but he lost his mother, had to fight in a meaningless war, for a time thought his father was going crazy, and finally murdered a man in cold blood. I think you could argue for "broken."

I do agree that it would be hard on Adolin for Shallan to choose Kaladin and Kaladin Shallan. It could push him over the edge for sure.

  7. Official means its been recognized by Sanderson, so basically the best.

I suggest staying out of the Stormlight Chronicles sub forum until you are done with WOR. There are spoilers everywhere.

    Welcome!

  8. I am one of those in the boat of "shardplate comes from or is spren." My reasoning is mostly based on shardplates interaction with shardblades. When a shardblade cuts a substance that is not alive it cuts through it like a knife through Styrofoam or similar substance. However, if you hit shardplate with a shardblade it is as if it is a regular blade.

My theory is not that shardplate is literally a spren, but is a byproduct of some kind from spren. Maybe a spren created it for its master, but does not actually become the armor for its master. When the spren was alive and bonded it could fix the armor, however, now that the spren is dead or the bond is broken they use fabrials and stormlight to fix the plate.

Again if shardplate was not the same substance as shardblades I think they would interact differently.

Thoughts? Any holes in the theory?

  9. I think these are fun to think about, but I would be so so so sad if they made this a tv/movie. I just don't think society can handle something on this scale. I mean the Lord of the Rings movies are huge and epic and really long (I love them) for most people and the Way of Kings alone dwarfs it.

"Don't do it!" I empathically send into the minds of any possible future producers of this venture.....

  10. Voted for Kaladin, both because I like them together best and because I think it's very likely to happen.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I also loved just how much fun they seemed to have together. In Words of Radiance, even though all of the principle characters are together in one place now, they're still very isolated, Kaladin and Shallan most of all. Adolin has his family to rely upon. Ditto for Dalinar, and he has Navani as well. While Kaladin loves the men of Bridge Four, he mentions multiple times that they revere him too much for him to confide in them. Shallan has Adolin, but whenever they're together she's always very focused on making a good impression, letting him talk about himself, making sure she's appealing enough to keep him interested in her. In the end, she cares too much about making him perceive her a certain way to truly be able to rely upon him for support. While talking to Adolin is fun, it's also work. In the chasm, Shallan actually made Kaladin Grumpyguts smile. She made him laugh. She caused him to make a terrible pun. Frankly, that's pretty amazing. How many times has Kal let loose like that in the entire time that we've known him? And Kal's complete, blunt, brutal honestly in turn allowed Shallan to tell the truth, something that she's had difficulty doing even to herself.

I agree with your thoughts. :)

I think the biggest reason I hope for Shalladin is it makes you take a step back and realize that although "the end of the world" is possibly happening for them human emotion and relationships not only still continue, but are the reason for the fight in the first place. The whole reason Kaladin is a Windrunner is because he has something to protect. Protect the beauty and power of those you love is why everyone fights. Friends, family, countrymen, and lovers. Without these powerful and exciting emotions you miss out on so much.

Haha, my hidden wish will always be Syl and Kaladin though. Sort of like in Hook (Peter Pan) with Tinkerbells love for Peter. The similarities are to strong to ignore. I know it won't happen, but my favorite line in WOK and WOR has been: "I CLAIM HIM!" screamed at the stormfather. It made me cry, haha.....

  11. Steelheart hit #1 too, but YA books have their own list.

This was by no means a foregone conclusion, but the closest competitor ended up not being very close. It's a real testament to how much people have grown to love the Way of Kings over the past four years. You guys really wanted to read the sequel, and you told all your friends.

And by the way it won't go on the Times website until...Saturday? Monday? next Friday? Their calendar is really screwy. It's the best seller list for March 23rd.

This is only the beginning. There is no better fantasy writer than Brandon Sanderson. I am very grateful for the universe he has created.

Congrats Brandon! You definitely deserve this recognition!

We should have a party for him. Or do something in honor.....

  12. I have been talking about Adolin quite a bit with some friends and I do think Adolin will become a Radiant of sorts, but one bound to the spren of Odium or a Hatebound.

I think there are three strong options for Adolin's character so far:

(Sidenote, obviously Sanderson could have a different plan but I believe these are the best options based on what has been written so far)

Option 1: (Least likely) Adolin stays the son of a high prince for most of the series and adds slightly to the story while not being a major character.

Option 2: Dalinar steps down as a highprince to focus on leading the Radiants and Adolin takes his place as highprince and leads the armies in some big battles and such.

(In either option 1 or 2 Adolin could marry or not marry Shallan)

Option 3: I don't know how likely this option is, but I unfortunately hope it happens

Adolin becomes troubled from murdering/killing Sadeas.

Adolin becomes confused at the state of the world and his place in it. Now useless, where he was previously powerful.

Adolin becomes envious of Renarin, Shallan, Dalinar, and Kaladins powers and position as Radiants.

Adolin becomes jealous of Shallan and Kaladin's romance that starts to flourish and Shallan's denial of his affections for Kaladin.

Adolin will have started to become friends with Kaladin and feel betrayed that he is "taking his girl"

These possibilities and more all combine to tempt Adolin to hate all of those involved and in his anger bind a hatespren (from Odium) and become a hatebound.

Its a tragic tale, but it seems like the most interesting character that Adolin could become.

Like I said before, this is all conjecture, but I doubt the killing of Sadeas was just to get Sadeas out of the way. I believe it was used as a foreshadowing of who Adolin will/ can become.

    Did I miss anything?

Adolin is my new Favorite Character since Jasnah died.   I was as excited to see him kill sadeas as I was when kaladin spoke his 2nd and 3rd oaths.     I would buy him a beer and play some call of duty with him.

Go read the epilogue. Like right now. For reals.

  13. Except, unless you are trolling, it's far from obvious. Eshonai, for example, is going to have her own book, and she sure is not becoming a Radiant. One of the Heralds, likely Taln, is also getting a book, and I doubt he'll demote himself to a Radiant either.

Where did you find out Eshonai will have her own book? Also couldn't Brandon have some characters share a book? For example Renarin and Eshonai? I don't see them being strong enough characters (so far) to carry their own books individually.

Heh, yea, I am so unreasonably curious about Dalinar's wife. I can't think of any dead women mentioned in the book, so we probably haven't heard anything about her - which, in turn, suggests that she is not terribly important. But I still really want to know what's up with her.

Do we know much about how and why Dalinar lost his memories of her? I remember something of it in the WOK.

  14. True he didn't call Kaladin a slave in his last scene but instead the head of Dalinar's guard.

I'm just annoyed we never had a scene with Sadeas sword-fighting.For two books we have been told what an amazing sword-fighter he was, but Brandon never showed it to us. Maybe in Dalinar's flashback book.

I think the fact that we all expected a grand duel between Adolin and Sadeas is why the quick brutal rage filled murder of Sadeas by Adolin was so shocking and a great piece of writing. I was really taken back, but I loved how it turned out.

I agree it's good when characters are more human after all not all heros can be celebt monks lol.

Kaladin Stormblessed! bridgeman!, surg binder!, knight radiant! and UNIK!!!!.......

Haha, that would be the worst. Usually in these epic fantasy series there is so much end of the world stuff happening that there is no time for kids of the main characters or anything. I hope for some Shaladin babies before the last book. Weird, but whatever. :)

  16. Hmn, Good point. If Shallan/ Kaladin will be an item by the end of the book three, Brandon will probably used Helaran's death to drive the wedge between them in Book four...hmn...

This is exactly what I was thinking. I think Kaladin will toy with telling her for most of the book, during the brief meets they have as they are at different parts of the world. Then when he finally goes to tell her she will confront him with it having found out on her own and will break up whatever "relationship" they have at that point.

Also dhazellouise, that earlier thesis, I mean, post you wrote was amazing! You did your research. Haha!
