  1. If I committed a crime so heinous that Capital Punishment wasn’t punishment enough and I had to choose between watching the 1st 4 episodes of Wheel of Time or watching Legend of the Seeker on repeat for 168 hours..

I am choosing Legend of the Seeker…

This adaptation is THAT STORMING BAD.

Edit: I am not even going to apologize for the double post.

  2. After watching episode 4, I am absolutely certain that RJ was right.

NO ONE should have ever touched this in an attempt to adapt it…

Fecal Monstrosity nearly as good as ‘Legend of the Seeker’… NEARLY.

It might just be, and I have to applaud this option, that Kal WON'T get a romantic option.

He's not in the right place for one. He's not ready. Lin knew that. It isn't what he needs right now. Syl offers more of what he needs right now. I don't object to Sylladin as a ship, and I think it could work as they really do seem much closer than any other Nahel couple, and they suit each other in many regards, but Syl offers a lot without adding romance in.

Not every major character NEEDS a romantic arc, certainly not in-narrative. Sex isn't the focus of the entire universe. Other types of love are important too, and much like say Elsa in Frozen, focus on non-romantic love can be refreshing.

If I could max out my upvotes on this I would.

  4. Nope.

Lirin gets absolutely ZERO latitude from me. A man who can look at his son and say the things that he did from a position of simple ideology is simply a terrible person.

    Irredeemable.

Lirin is a terrible person trying to masquerade as a Pacifist.

Honestly, Adolin’s worst flaw is his preference for sewed-up pockets for looks rather than having them functional. Anyone else and that would be a big turn off, but he can be forgiven, if just barely.

I remember having to sew my pockets closed on my uniforms for inspection... If Adolin has a major flaw, that is it.

Storm the fashion, give me functional pockets.

I agree we'll probably just never know, but here's my theory anyway. I don't think the merchant has items specifically Connected to Kaladin. I think it's similar to the way that Wit always knows where he's supposed to be.

Which is to say, this merchant just happens to have whatever it is you need to find in that moment. Or more accurately, he has whatever it is he needs to be selling to that person in that moment, which is why Lift found Wit's flute to lead Kaladin to Tien's horse at that moment in his life. It may not even be something he's aware of himself. Not everyone who is Invested knows they're using magic.

Hopefully that makes any kind of sense.

This reminds me eerily of the Shopkeeper in Needful Things.

Kate Reading and Michael Kramer sounded a little tired or something, you could almost hear Kate's eyes glazing over when she was mentioning another facet of Voidlight/Towerlight/Anti-light, etc.

I agree that listening to the Audio first was not a great idea. They just didn’t capture my attention.

Through OB, I had read the Print or E-Book version first and then got the audio afterwards just because I have never been a fan of their narration. I could not make it through ‘The Great Hunt’ when I got the Wheel of Time audiobooks and I think I bought and returned them all within 30 days.

Definitely skipping the SA audiobooks after RoW.

  8. But the SF was never summoned as a Blade. The instances where we see Spren being summoned to operate an Oathgate, the form Shifts into whatever the mechanism needs to be in order for it to function.

Lift does this with Wyndle and the closest thing to a weapon he has ever been was a Fork.

Yes Dalinar summoned the SF’s physical manifestation, but not as any kind of a weapon and not for combat.

  9. I really like Jasnah, mostly because she ISN’T perfect.

She has turned ‘Striving for Competence’ into an art form and perfected it. She is absolutely brilliant and from the outside it is difficult to see any of the Humanity behind it.

I can’t quote any of the relevant pieces, but there are a few from Shallan that vaguely come to mind where Jasnah’s calm, perfectly self assured demeanor shows cracks or breaks down visibly.

Trauma in her past or simply her personality are things that I won’t even try to comment on, but She is sort of the Ideal that appeals to me the most in the SA. Be so Storming competent and self assured outwardly that all of your internal struggles are either yours alone or only shared with a VERY few, very close people.

  10. Anywhere. I think that Dalinar being bonded to the Stormfather and not being bound to the High Storm is suggestive. I don’t think she will be physically bound to Urithiru.

For Scholarship and Discovery? With the Sibling helping her, the more ‘Modern’ Fabrial Science, where spren are trapped will become a thing of the past. She will redevelop the Fabrials that are built around Spren cooperation.

She is in no way limited and probably far more liberated with her Bond to the Sibling.

I believe this is an inconsistency - Kaladin’s first time doing this was when he was a guardsman for Dalinar, if I remember correctly. During his time as a bridgeman, he barely used this ability, and definitely didn’t during his “early days” as one.

Kaladin did this in the Chasm with Rock and The Lopen while they were trying to attach the bag of spheres to the bridge.

I should have read the next comment....

  12. I do not like Lirin. At all.

If he were simply a Pacifist, I would have no problem at all with him, but his angry outbursts just make him a Self-Righteous Laviswaffle.

And unless somehow Shallan is completely losing herself to Formless, I do think it is perfectly reasonable to assume Pattern is the spy. The new Deadeye Cryptic is very suggestive and does make me think more about Pattern’s insistence that Shallan will eventually kill him. Someone has some explaining to do.

Navani and the Sibling. NEATO!!! And they couldn’t turn Urithiru back on because they were only using ONE kind of Investiture and they need to infuse the Pillar in the right order. I am also proud of Navani for not giving up her passion for Fabrial science. She has a solid understanding of the science as a whole and that gives her the ability to think of things and make connections that more specialized Fabrial Engineers may miss or simply not think of. Being well educated without being specialized is a VERY useful thing.

And also... Lirin... Is he secretly one of the Heralds who has simply gone ‘round the bend? I would accept that and not be so harsh about him.

  13. I have to say... I absolutely do not understand the ‘Spoiler’ mentality. I have the Audio version because I spend so much of my time staring at a windshield.

Reading this thread has only made me MORE excited for the rest of the book.

I’m only about 12 hours in right now. I absolutely love all of the teasers and am excited to find out how they all come about.

  14. I have the Audio on Pre Order and the extended drive time involved in my job will get me through the book in slightly under 3 days.

I will definitely miss the Weekly Serialized release. I think there was a petition on one of these forums advocating for a serial release of the rest of SA. It is really too bad that didn’t pick up more support.

  15. To the OP’s question. Based on what I’ve seen so far in SA.

I think the biggest hurdle would be the identity of the individual in question. I have read somewhere that if a person were to see their Self walking down the street, they wouldn’t recognize their Self because our perception of our own appearance is incongruent with others perception of our appearance.

So, if our Perfect Spiritual Identity were suddenly the reality (not just Trans/Fluid, but any individual) would we be recognizable?

Let’s say that someone named Devi were to turn up one day and declare themselves by Identity as a different Gender. There may be a general resemblance that could suggest familial relation, but proving Identity and resolving Gender would probably happen at the same time.

As Roshar has seen a TON major upheaval in a very short time, if Identity can be confirmed, I doubt Gender would be questioned too much further.

12- Jasnah wonders how was Shallan able to find Re-Shephir in Urithiru while none of the soldiers in the tower could. Do we know the reason for this?

I don’t KNOW exactly, but I think that Shallan as a Lightweaver has an affinity for Re-Shephir. After all, The Nightmother was creating imitations of life presumably in an effort to be more alive or more human or to understand the nature of either one.

I think it the the creation of illusions and not quite ‘Reality’ that connects the Lightweavers to Re-Shephir. And that there will be other order correlations that work similarly.

Jasnah wonders because she hasn’t asked the right questions. If she asked the right ones, I think she would make the connection.

I'm not sure how it would affect guns, but Roshar's atmosphere has a higher oxygen content than earth's. If that affects gunpowder, then that would explain why they don't have guns or gunpowder.

Oxygen is a catalyst. If anything, it would simply make the chemical reaction more energetic.

But even then, most of the chemical reaction happens inside the casing behind the projectile.  And it creates its own oxygen, that is why a bullet can fire in a vacuum.

I say that the oxygen content on Roshar would not have a large effect on firearm development or use.

There are WAY too many Brandon books titled “______ of ______” already. Like 80% of Cosmere novels, even the unpublished early works like Liar of Partinel and Aether of Night.

And this is nearly definitive in Epic Fantasy.
