  1. It could just be a product of the horneater language. Their syntax is different than alethi. Or maybe that is how horneaters refer to objects. For instance, in spanish all objects have a gender, so maybe a sword is masculine in horneater. It could also be similar to how we refer to ships as "her".

Before the battle at narak, has Rock ever been close enough to a shardblade to possibly guess that they are dead spren? There are no shards on the peaks, sadeas didn't have a blade when his (horneater word for leader) came down to challenge. And since he was cook, he was never on guard duty. He was there when Dalinar gave sadeas oathbringer, but Rock was in the crowd, not up close.

I wonder if Rock could have figured out the spren connection had he seen one close up.

  2. Mysty, I like your Hoid one. The final "Where is Hoid?" made me think of us here on 17S poring over a gigantic cosmere Where's Waldo. Which is kind of what happens.

:D that is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote it! But it applies just as well to the cosmere's 17th shard.

@seloun, those are good! I especially like szeth's ketek, so minimal, but captures him exactly.

  3. Maybe you can fix the noun to verb on szeths by changing "still living" to "still alive". Life to alive isn't too much of a strech is it?

Great job, by the way. I like them better than my ketek for Hoid, though to be honest I created half of it while falling asleep.

    Hoid is where trouble starts

    World hopper

    Roamer

    Hopping worlds starts trouble

    Where is hoid?

  4. Actually, the double eye symbol of the Radiants is a glyph, or at least there is an option to shape it as such. on the back of Amaram's cloak it was shaped as the glyph "oath" . See the very end of chapter 55, Rules of the Game.

  5. Was at the signing tonight (my first), and it was really awesome.  My wife knitted him a "Writing Spren" and he was super happy to receive it.

Knitted spren?!?! What an awesome idea! I guess I know what I'll be trying to work on this weekend! Now what sort of spren do I want...hmmm...
  6. Okay first post!

I kinda got obsessed with trying to find stuff on the map soooo here goes.

I tried a couple things like tracing out the latitude lines, overlaying the two maps we have and other stuff but what i ended up doing that seemed to make sense to me was

    - trace out the lines from the compass thingy,

    - flip the image horizontally and trace them again

    - flip vertically and trace again

    - flip horizontally and trace.

I noticed two points of convergence of the lines.

    Image

1- where I believe Urithiru to be situated near Babatharnam as posited by Falconite on the stormblessed forums

2 - the Emerald pools in the Horneater peaks

*speculation* Could those points of convergence be locations of shardpools?

  7. ...being mostly shown by an extra screw you line or a little rotation or a diacritic (will find Shallan's quote eventually)...

    You mean this quote?

The h sound can befor any letter. We write it as the symmetrical letter, to make the word balance, but add a diacritical mark to indicate it sounds like an h so the word is easier to say.

    Page 548, WoR hardback

I have been thinking about this line. H isn't the only letter in the woman's script that has diacritical marks. Does that mean other letters can be considered symetrical for each other? R and L? D and TH? G and CH?
  8. Kaladin: You know, I'm a rather brilliant surgeon. Perhaps I can help you with that missing arm.

    Lopen: What missing arm?

    Later...

Kaladin: [pointing to lopen's missing arm] Didn't you, didn't you use to have that on the other side?

    Lopen: What?

    Kaladin: Your, uh, oh nevermind.

That's a spoof from Young Frankenstine, right? Been a while since I've seen that. Upvote for the laugh you gave me!

I had never actually thought about which arm was missing before...weird. oh darn, I will just have to reread WoK and WoR to see if they slipped in a reference while talking about Lopen carring water skins or the rope.

But i'd bet that wherever Lopen's missing arm is, it is making obnoixous gestures at our confusion!

  9. I'm a little late to the party. Excellent work by all, especially the projection lines and spherical transformation.

Looking at the Frostlands map, the coastline appears funny to me. The two coves south of the fort near Shallan's landfall are oddly similar, and the whole stretch of coast is made up of similarly sized inlets. Some of the lines describing these are continuous, while others fail to connect to their neighbors. In fact, many of the inlets/outcroppings look remarkably like the Thaylen letters that Harakeke decoded for us. Is it possible that there are words written into the map itself?

You might be on to something here. It could just be a stylistic choice, making the coastline look so blocky. But it would be sneaky to hide writing there. Now we just need to summon our master gylph decoder for his take on the suspicious coastline.

  10. This may seem off topic, but the boarder around the colored Roshar map reminds me of architecture decorations, like you would find around frescos or mosaics in classical style buildings (brought to mind decor in the US capitol building). I wonder if the map is a sketch of one from a fancy building, like the gallery of maps, but with more than the shattered plains, obviously.

  11. Can someone point me to how we know the art vandal is Shalash? And specifically how we know she is destroying images of herself? I think in that interlude she is destroying a whole bunch of unrelated art, so destroying art in general makes as much sense as saying that she's specifically destroying images of herself.

I got Brandon to admit the vandal was destroying images of Shallash, but he rafoed if she actually was Shallash.

  12. I assume it is because of Syl. Ehlokar's symbol heads are likely the same breed of spren as pattern, cryptics. And we know that cryptics and honorspren don't get along, even when they can't remember why, or at least Syl doesn't remember why. So when an honorspren started hanging out where Ehlokar lives, the cryptics left.

  13. Now that the Stormfather has bonded to Dalinar, do you think he will allow more honor spren over to bond with all the new squires popping up? I know Lopen is stoked to be glowing now, but I don't think he will give up until he can fly too.

  14. I think this is line 3 "uritheru could be re(something)...."

and line 5: "what I believe to be gateways there but the ..."

and line 6: "and in how to work them it is likely to dangerous to activate them on the"

of course, why is Shallan sketching on the back of Jasnah's paper to begin with? was there no blank paper in the trunk? or is this just a sly way for team Sanderson to keep us busy between stormlight books?

    will work on more

  15. This connection isn't nearly so religiously deep, but I burst out laughing when I made the connection.

Remember when Adolin and Shallan are talking over lunch and Adolin says "it is all right for Jasnah to run around in her middle thirties without a spouse, but if I reach my 23 birthday without a bride I'm some kind of menace." Well, there is a very similar quote floating around mormon culture, usually atributed to Brigham Young, which is "Any man over the age of 25 and still single is a menace to society". I have no idea if the original quote is true or merely urban legend, but I bet Brandon was thinking about it when writing that scene!

  16. It makes sense.  I haven't read any of his unpublished works, alas, although I'd really like to!  I don't think they're available anywhere...thus the unpublished part ;)

Brandon will send you his best draft of White Sand and Aether of the Night if you ask for them in an email to him. Just remember that all discussion about those books is through PM only.

However i am under the impression that Dragonsteel is sfficently cosmere spoilery that he does not hand it out.

  17. That's a very nice shirt, but... a collar and a shirt tag? Boy, somebody here must have a fetish!

    if you mean a fetish for things of Brandon's Cosmere? then TOTALLY! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Besides, this is the first sequel release of a Sanderson book since i was introduced just before the AMoL tour, so I just had to go all-out. okay, all-out in a way that still meets the dress code at work.
