Yeah, horses normally have rectangular or oval-shaped pupils.
ah, I knew goats and toads did but not horses as well.

Loooreee!
You forgot to add they also have rectangular pupils. Not sure what it means, other than they have mastered sage mode.

Haven't even been able to finish the first chapter yet.... But seriously, the mental image of Syl on a headboard, cheering Kaladin on...
"Harder, Kaladin! Harder! Oh yeah... That's it. Hit it"
I'm.... Laughing and dying inside.
Same here. Between this and Pattern checking out people in baths spren seem pretty pervy!

This is interesting to consider. Hasn't it been said that Alethi hair always shows how much alethi blood they have? Doesn't Adolin have more black hair than Renarin?
People seem to be going nuts over the hair color ratio. There are several reasons I can think of that don't involve one of them being adpoted. Also we have already had a WoB on this.
QuotePRNCRNY
So Alethi hair "breeds true" based on the individual's ancestry, why then does Renarin have more black than Adolin?
BRANDON SANDERSON (PARAPHRASED)
As with us regular people, different shades of skin can be had within the same family with the same parents, its just a matter of how their DNA falls out. No different here. Nothing special with Adolin and Renarin's hair.

@Pattern We have already seen that Shallan likely has at least some ability at, for lack of a better term, farseeing, being able to see either current / future events happening in other locations. (Back on the beach when she drew both Shalash and Yalb). So my guess would be there is a lot more to LIghtweaving than simple illusions.

Why can't Renarin do it?
As far as we know Renarin has not progressed enough to summon his Blade.

It's primarily about revenge, I think. I'm a strong believer, that Ialai is behind the second killing and she somehow knows, that Adolin is behind killing her husband, yet she has no evidence to support it. So what does she do? Kill random lighteyes in the same manner, that Adolin killed Sadeas. She tries to spook him, so that he maybe confesses by himself under the pressure. She may have anticipated, that Dalinar would appoint Adolin as an investigator, too. That woman is a snake, but what makes her so dangerous is her intelligence and capabilities. It would be her style. And her plan works. Adolin is under immense pressure already, she just has to keep it up.
To me this feels like a horrible idea. Sadeas death would have eaten away at Adolin, I think we can all agree on that. In time he may have even cracked and confessed. Now with the new murder he has been giving a focus, something to galvanize this thoughts and actions. Someone is using his killing of Sadeas as a cover to kill other people and I don't think he will rest til he finds out who. Adolin isn't stupid and has to know that if he confesses now he will be suspect in this new killing and the actual murderer is much more likely to remain free. This gives him even more reason to not confess.

How is Renarin going to wrestle someone to the ground and stab them in the eye with a knife? Mraize could do it. Ialai could arrange for someone to do it. Adolin did it once (though he is injured now and I am in no way advocating that he did it). Renarin is a bookish, spindly guy who doesn't know how to fight. I don't see lightweaving or regrowth assisting either. Renarin as the copycat killer makes no sense.
I would guess infusing stormlight would give him some advantage even without a ton of skill. And it does mention that the victims clothing was disheveled from an extended fight.

The second murder is very curious, The suspect pool could be very large so lets look a reasons why someone would do a copy cat killing.
1) To put more pressure to investigate. Lets face it, even though he was a highprince not that many people are going to be upset over Sadeas bitting it.
2) Someone knows it was Adolin. If this is the case it could almost be a way to protect Adolin, if someone can show he has a alibi for this murder that takes suspicion that he killed Sadeas.
3) to cause chaos.
Tired now so can't think of other reasons.

It seems several people have had this happen with international purchases. I've read some have had it cancelled multiple times or had problems finding it on a phone but were able to reorder from a PC. If the cover is all that is troubling you then you could get the UK version and then change the cover to the US version with a program like Calibre.

I am thinking more of something like quantum entanglement - magically stabilized and enhanced.
From my very limited understanding of quantum entanglement that is pretty much the same thing isn't it ? Like the Ansible in Ender's Game.

@Ansalem I think i see what you are saying. The problem comes from trying to apply mechanics in the physical plane to the cognitive. From my understanding the CR is more like a flat map, with only the parts people really think about appearing on it. With spanreeds I feel the link is made cognitively but their movement in the cognitive isn't that important. Not sure if you have read Kingkiller by Rothfuss but how some sympathy works in that feels the same here. I believe these two things are actually the same thing so when I move one the other moves as well.

I was addressing @Pattern's point that different points on a planet are moving at different speeds and directions relative to a fixed position in space. If one is on the equator and another is on a pole, the one at the equator is moving significantly faster than the one at the pole regardless of whether they're sitting still relative to the planet. Pattern made the example of two on opposite sides of the planet at the equator, which would mean they're moving in opposite directions from one another (if you look at a spinning ball from above, if the top part is going left the bottom part is going right). So a moving ship shouldn't make any difference, the speed of a ship is inconsequential compared to the speed of planetary rotation, and yet the movement of a ship does seem to matter. This problem wouldn't be solved through the Cognitive Realm if the CR version of Roshar acts the same as the physical version. You're just moving the same problem to another location that way.
In short, relative movement is actually the problem not the solution.
location on the planet shouldn't matter since their relative positions to each other would never change.

What if the spanreeds work through the Cognitive Realm and the Cognitive Realm doesn't move as the planet does? It would still make sense that you can't use them while moving on a ship since moving along Roshar has an equivalent motion through the CR, but the CR itself doesn't necessarily need to be attached to the motion of the planet in that sense. In other words, is the CR version of Roshar like a shadow planet that moves in the same way as the physical planet or is it merely a representation that is fixed in CR space? Does it rotate and orbit a CR sun? The brief visuals we've had of Shadesmar would suggest to me that it doesn't, because the clouds are always pointed at the sun which tells me that the sun is in a fixed spot in the sky. Though since our viewings so far have been brief, it could simply be that the clouds move to keep track of the sun. But I also wonder if Shadesmar is even spherical, since the sun always seems to be visible.
It may be a bit of a stretch since I just now thought it up, but worth considering I think.
I agree that spanreeds work through the cognitive realm but I've always pictured the cognitive as a mirror. Planetary movement would not affect spanreeds because of relative movement. Both are moving through space at the same speed at the same time. We have been told spanreeds won't work on a ship but not if that means they won't activate or not. Its possible you could activate it but the reed would lock in place while the ship would continue moving, thus making it impossible to function properly. If so you could in theory make them work, if you had them both on ships moving at the exact same speed in the exact same direction. Highly unlikely with the current technology but theoretically possible.

This is actually quite impressive. 90 miles (144 km), would be roughly 30 miles (48 km) per day. Without Stormlight. You can walk that in the first day maybe, but for 3 days in a row... Makes me wonder if KR are stronger than normal men due to the Nahel bond, even without stormlight. He doesn't look tired enough to not have slept in 3 days, just depressed (nothing new there). He also had to stay still during the Everstorm. Could just be a mundane explanation such as he is in good shape, and stubborn, but could also be something more?
I use to run D&D and Pathfinder PnP games and my players would always argue with me on how far they could travel in a day so I ended up doing a bit of research on it. If i remember correctly this seems pretty in line with what I would expect Kaladin to be able to accomplish. Between his training as a solider (who spend a lot of time marching) and bridge runs I would imagine he has excellent endurance. He is traveling cross country and while that may be slightly easier on Roshar due to the enviornment it still not as fast as someone walking/running on roads. Someone mentioned gravity in a earlier post and I don't really think that would be much of a issue since its his native gravity and his muscle mass and bone density would be designed for it.

@Calderis The man's arm was cut with a knife in a struggle with her father so not metaphorically.
QuoteHer father barging in. Mother’s friend with a knife, the two struggling, the friend getting cut in the arm. Blood spilled on the carpet. The friend had won that fight, eventually holding Father down, pinned on the ground. Mother took the knife and came for Shallan.
And then . . .
And then a sword in Shallan’s hands.I would imagine Shallan killed her mother and then killed the man holding her father down. It is possible the man let her father up to go after Shallan and then her father killed him but I think that is just over complicating the scene. She seems to be finally accepting the truth here so I think we can take her at her word when she says she killed them.

you also have to consider Gavilar couldn't write it himself, he would have to transcribe the message to Mr.T
I don't think that matters in this case, It would be like receiving a telegraph for us, you would consider it from the person that dictated it not from the telegraph operator. That said I think this is the main reason that Gavilar would NOT send the info via spanreed. He obviously kept this information very well hidden seeing that both Navani and Dalinar were unaware he ever had visions. I was just trying to point out that Mr. T's statement was not 100% proof he was at the treaty signing.

I am not saying that you're incorrect, so please don't take it that way. I'm honestly curious. With the leaps forward that are being made in Fabrial-Tech, we spanreeds already available at that time? Do we know when they were invented?
I was mainly playing devils advocate, I don't really believe he would send this sort of information over spanreed, just pointing out it could be possible. I did a quick search and couldn't find any info on how long spanreeds have been around so I"m searching the books now. I vaguely remember mention of them being used when the Parshendi were first found.
**update**
Found it!
QuoteBut this would have alienated allies, and could have undermined the kingdom. Elhokar argued for leniency toward Roshone, and his father agreed via spanreed.

Yes, in the end of Interlude 14 - Taravangian in WoR (loc. 17499 in Kindle edition):
"That was, at least, what the visions had proclaimed. Visions Gavilar had confided in him six years ago, the night of the Alethi king's death. Gavilar had seen visions of the Almighty, who was also now dead, and of a coming storm. This not only shows that Taravangian had been present, but also that he belonged to Gavilar's inner circle of confidants (the Sons of Honor ?). In the prologue he is almost certainly the old man in robes. It also hintes that Gavilar's visions were similar to Dalinar's.
While I agree this likely indicates he was present at the feast the existence of spanreeds means its not 100% conclusive. It is possible, however unlikely, that Galivar sent him the info via spanreed on the day he was killed.

Chapter by chapter would be pretty insane to try, not only would it spam the boards but who is going to have the willpower to stop between each chapter and post!. I do like the idea of putting up a discussion for each 'book' section though I'm not sure I'd be able to use it. I would still be worried about accidental spoilers and barring natural disasters I usually devour a Sanderson book from start to finish in one sitting.

It sure sounds like it @dionysus. With so many chapters coming out it would be very hard to skip a chapter and not have it spoiled anyway.

Love the idea @maxal. Should we do a new post for each weeks release or just lump it all together ? Separate post sounds better to me, helps to keep it cleaner and will make it easier to people to avoid spoilers if they are behind but want to jump into the conversation.
