Except... we know that Danilar was Odium's first choice since the beginning right? I thought it was pretty much said in OB that Odium chose Dalinar to be his champion, hence why he felt the Thrill for most of his adult life.
Not only that but Dalinar felt remorse for his actions at some point. The death of his wife caused him to recognize the weight of his actions. Comparably, it doesn't seem that Gavilar was at that stage... if at all. I would argue he sought power and and saw becoming a Radiant--and eventually, a Herald--as simply the next step in attaining said power.
