Anyone noticed Renarin's name is significant?
RandomCable replied to RandomCable's topic in Stormlight Archive
I really like this interpretation! -
Hear me out Renarin's name written out in the woman's script is: (apologies for the awful representation, please forgive me) <|>l<+-> < = r > = n | = e l = a +- = i it looks better in the actual script, give it a try. Similar to an echoing waveform, dying off over time? Welp Ima leave it to the theorists to glean the meaning from this.

Hmmm... yes... This scene... It was... Beautiful I suppose. How TOdium was so caring for those who hurt... It almost made me feel sorry for him. And I appreciated that it showed Odium's power isn't just Hatred but also all powerful emotion. Just the lines ive quoted above... They gave me the chills. Very very well written and just incredible Oh yea also all kinds of tiny puzzle pieces of the cosmere floating around. Appreciated that too. I didn't quite expect Taravangian to react quite like this, I expected either more logic or more hatred, but this seems like a blend of the two sides of him. Kind of similar to Harmony when his powers worked together. Makes me wonder if Odium is also made of two halves, one of logical hatred and one of emotional hatred? Indeed, very interesting.

Oh yeah @hwiles, That's a good point. For some reason I forgot that Shallan was blocking her memories, of which also makes the Truths she's speaking at the same time admitting that she's lying to herself, and like @Returned says there, its about self-awareness. Which is interesting to think about. and with @Treamayne's ideas, there's also the grounding aspect. Hmm, intriguing... Thanks for your ideas, people! 'Twas helpful for understanding the greater perspective.

What if Shallan is swearing Half-Oaths? Instead of the usual groundbreaking lifechanging massive realisations of the other Radiants, Shallan's oaths seem... too easy. Too simple. Yes, I realise she is lying to herself, so incorporating those truths into herself is important for her growth as a person blah blah blah... but it really seems too easy. And knowing Sanderson, this makes me suspicious. All the other Oaths we've seen have been things the characters have needed to do better. Save others, accept the way things are, change their selves. But Shallan's? "What am I? I am afraid." "I killed my mother." "I killed my father." All really... vague and simple compared to things like "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves." "I will free those in bondage." That kinda thing Any other thoughts on the matter will be appreciated

Matter/energy/investiture 3 way axis
RandomCable replied to PlumPudding's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The interesting thing is when you think of, for example the Sixth Heightening of Awakening, with the concept of Instinctive Awakening. Previously to this, you needed to figure out the right words to say, the right frame of mind to be in, all that jazz. But at that point you didn't need that, you just needed to know what you wanted with any given Command. I suspect that something similar is taking place with this idea of reality control. One can see hints throughout the Cosmere of reality control in different forms, more subtle and encompassing than simple Forgery or Soulcasting or even Sphere Manifestation. The specific instances elude me, but they're around somewhere. I wonder if with further levels of power, the easier it gets to control how reality flows. So the quantity of Investiture needed would not increase linearly with the size of the change, but less each time perhaps as the Investiture itself helps control the change. Throughout we see many instances of greater concentrations of power allowing for exponentially larger changes, and I think this would be the case here too. Very intriguing concept! -
I appreciate The Lopen. He's just so unique! yeah, some people find him annoying but them who have that opinion don't see what they're missing. He's determined to bring light to others while staving off darkness within. Yeah maybe he makes mistakes, but it's a proportionate quantity! The more you try, the more mistakes you make. I really appreciate the scene between The Lopen and Rysn in Dawnshard, when it shows how much he really cares and why he says the things he does. Also I feel like The Stormfather likes messing with him and it's hilarious. With his second ideal coming in the middle of a conversation is so funny. I was introduced to the Cosmere in three instances in the span of a year, with one friend having Warbreaker on a long car ride of which I devoured half of, finding his books at the library, and I have a cousin who leant me his whole collection at one time or another. I only made the connection after the third instance

Oh missed the second half of this Least favourite as in: Character of whom I feel is the least developed: Beldre from Mistborn Era 1, we don't really see many coinshots/lurchers in era 1 with any real development and I feel like an opportunity was missed there. I do appreciate the little we see of her though. Could've been more though. Who I would dislike in real life: Rayse. He's just kinda condescending and nasty. He seems to be caring but he's just malicious throughout and it just makes my skin crawl. Written very well though.

Possible Contract "Loophole" - Preview Chapter Spoilers
RandomCable replied to Lenth's topic in Cosmere Discussion
(Part of the loophole has been revealed to be that if one sides' forces claim the capital of a country, that side claims that entire country. Which is a big deal since the cut-off date is the day of the contest, meaning during the 10 days, TOdium can push for as many capitals as he can and get a disproportionally larger area of Roshar. Kind of like with the Capital Risk variation of the Risk strategy board game.) -
He's a bit like me, non-confrontational, occasionally a bit detached, but with the best of intentions. The scene that makes me like him the most is when he tells Adolin to go back, then runs RIGHT AT THE GIANT ROCK MONSTER. Also like despite all the conflict within him, he still helps others. his eyes and epilepsy were cured but he has visions, he struggles to interact with others yet he really tries, he dislikes sudden contact but he is a healer. All seeming opposites that build upon each other to make a very interesting character. Even though he hasn't had much (on-screen-time) he still is a very solid character with intriguing development. I love how he just gets kinda absorbed into Bridge 4 even though he's so different, but I suppose that's also the point. He may be so different from those in Bridge 4 but he's also different from the others around him, so they accept him. I feel like that's just cool. And like his healing working slightly better than normal Regrowth, and his Illumination working so differently, it's just really interesting. Alongside that, the struggles of wishing to fit in and feeling everything is pushing him away from normality, everything he tries just distinguishes him more and he just wants to fit in, I guess that resonates with me just a little bit. Just the nervousness in most situations punctuated by immense bravery and knowledge of what is right in others, I just feel like he's one of the best developed characters even with some of the least written about him.

I think my favourite for character growth is Dalinar (THE OATHS THO!), but overall favourite probably Renarin or Spook. Nah I'm good, thanks! ...Hemallurgy. Yikes. Uh... I feel like if Hoid doesn't use it for gaining powers he does so for very good reason. Not just opening oneself up to the effects of Shards but I feel like there have to be more repercussions that haven't been explored yet. Done the Radiant quiz multiple times and I always get Lightweaver no matter how much I have variation from day to day...

Oooohhh Probably Azir, it seems kinda chill. Interesting without being hostile or dangerous. Also no lighteye/darkeye divisions, my eyes shift colours just enough that that could get... confusing lets say. (ranging from dark green to light blue with slight orange edges)

I'm new to the 17th Shard, but I've read pretty much all of Brandon's books multiple times each. Just cant get enough of them haha! I was introduced to his books a couple years ago, and I've loved all of them! Seriously loved the secret projects tho, I read Tress, and it was immediately my favourite; then read Yumi and it was then my new favourite book; then read Sunlit Man and that then tied with Yumi for my favourite! Ive also really enjoyed the worldbuilding throughout the Cosmere (Random fact: read each of the SA books in less than 5 days each)
