  1. Nick jerks his arm upwards, springing the railgun rifle tethered to it into his hand. "Nice job!" "It's pictures sent through technology, but that's not important. I found you some people to freeze."
  2. Nick has already tied a second one. Nick elbows Kaleb, holding a rifle with wires leading up to the trapdoor. "I've got a video feed right here."
  3. "Modern? I'd call it outdated, and you'd call it futuristic. Anachronistic interactions are a bit confusing. Anyway, the people up there are trying to avoid the choke point, but because we can attack around corners and they can't, they're making some tactical blunders. I think the crystals should have a similar dynamic to what they can do."
  4. "Yes, we do. Typically people die of accidents, illness, and such before running out of life force. Some wizards figured out how to burn life force in a specific order, starting with things that don't negativity effect you, like graying hair, so we're even less likely to die of overcasting."
  5. "That's more adrenaline then I anticipated, but ok." Nick passes Kaleb the feed from the electronic rifle scope, then tosses the gun up the trapdoor. "Yeah, we're under attack by some sort of strike team up there. Aren't you a battlefield commander too?"
  6. "How else would you do it? Wizards, and other people for that matter, usually die before they run out of life force, anyway. I've heard archmagic can restore life force, but most of it was lost, so it takes decades of study to piece it together, and even more to actually explain how it works to another."
  7. "Me neither. You wanted a bow, right? I think there's one in the corner there."
  8. "I needed a job, and burning through your life force to use magic pays better and is more interesting than being a bookbinder like my father."
  9. "Not really. But Adtae did it, so so can I. Wait, this is not good. Do we know where to find the portal back?"
  10. “Humans and other sky people came from the sky one day. They had devices that were us-alive, and others that were them-alive. They asked if we would come with them, and my people made me from useful memories. I went with the sky people to learn if we should come. Then I fell out of the sky in one place, with many strange people, then I fell out of the Idea. It was strange.”
  11. Nick jumps. “No wonder you didn’t want to do that. Here, if we put a knot onto it, you can drop the grenade and get the dagger back.” Nick tied a knot around a grenade, then leaves a loop so when the dagger is one way up, it won’t fall, but the other way it will.
  12. Rust contracts into a ball, trying to think of a way to continue the conversation. They’re suppose to be learning, so they can figure out whether joining the sky people is a good idea.
  13. “Thank you. I’ll help you get a new dagger, however that works. The guys up there may count as low level evil souls, or something.”
  14. “I suppose so. But I could make several. Crocodiles are useful, but I don’t have enough hide for more than one.” The anole skitters over to Olvax, then deflates, turning back into hide. He wraps it back around the staff, but there is a gap, now, where the original hide covered. He doesn’t mention the book titles, yet; annoying this man might prevent him from sharing information he was willing to part with.
  15. “The part you put up the your eye is the dangerous part. Other than recoil, the rest of it should be safe. I’m not great with guns, but I bet someone here could teach you.”
  16. “It is weird to think that you have parts of you that do not see.” Rust looks over at @Spark of Hope and @Through The Living Glass, “Human and bird whose names I do not know, what do you think of eyes?”
  17. Nick fist bumps Sleeper. “Can you see what just happened? My improvised periscope isn’t ready.”
  18. “My school? My school is saurolurgy. I can’t think of a way an entire school could be banned. I’m not taught how to, for example, turn another human into a reptile, but other saurolurgy is accepted.” The anol has gone over to the bookshelf and is reading the titles for Olvax.
  19. “What do you mean? Removing the healing magic? That seems like a good idea. Removing the spellsteel itself seems to not work as well.”
  20. Nick tries to wirelessly connect to the scope, and to remove the ammo from it, he fires it against the wall. “Don’t do that; that’s a gun, it launches projectiles down the barrel.” Nick fires the rifle he is trying to turn into a periscope into the wall, both to demonstrate and to prevent giving the strike team another weapon.
  21. “Heretical? I can’t think of any forbidden schools, just ones that aren’t very useful. Of course, all that could mean is that they’re very thoroughly forbidden. Necromancy is fine; I wouldn’t use it myself, but if you’re a scholar it’s a wonderful art. As for my specific study, I’ve been mostly trying to find new reptiles. I discovered an interesting one in a desert; it can shoot blood from its eyes. Why, I have no idea, but such an ability could be helpful to a saurolurgist.” The anol appears completely unafraid, presumably because Olvax is controlling it.
  22. Nick looks at the ceiling worriedly, then darts into the weapon room to look for some sort of camera, perhaps an electronic scope.
