  1. The impression I've got is this. 'enlightenment' is just unmaking with more appealing name. That said they seem to be the act of rewriting all the honor bits of a spren with odium. if we assume that the broken oath, the act of deliberately going against their intent is what breaks a spren and makes them a dead eye then yes. I think that it enlightenment would convert them into a be a 'normal' Enlighted spren.

However a enlightened cultivation spren. is NOT the same. And when you think about it replacing all of a beings honour with hate would have to change the. So, I'm disinclined to think that that's what will happen with Mayalaran because the resultant being simply wouldn't be Maya anymore.

Honestly, I think the Ba-Ado-Mishram's dead-eye connection has to do with her control over connection and Roshar's investiture. in which case freeing her will undo most of the damage given time.

  2. Not to be reductionist or anything but I found this on reddit a while back seems relevant. (I'd post a link but ant remember this forums views on that.)

PS: Why Valor + Mercy = Intelligence?

  3. If you already have some form of power you are 100% correct. If I’m a surgebinder spiritual understanding of my power is a game changer, same if I was a pewter misting or a real estate tycoon. BUT if you’re a normal person, then becoming mistborn as a side effect is just too tempting to pass. Information is only useful from positions of power. Thus. IF I had any other form of power I pick Atium, If I don’t, and I don’t I pick lerasium.

Note I think this changes if it’s large amounts of the metal, If I got “one bead a day for the rest of my life. I think I’d take atuim. But even then that much lerasium means you become SUPREMELY influential in a matter of months.

(reads Tamriel’s replay) .. (Rember’s the WoB where becoming a god metal savant makes you the shard bearer.)
Actually, I’d pick lerasium to receive one be of a day no arguments.

  5. Tress spoilers? VERY minor if so.

    Spoiler

Bonds seem to be a mortal? for like of a better word, something in exchange for and invested art.
So take the luhal bond, you as a human trade the spore water to have control over its shape. and in the case of the nahel bond you trade... Ideals? Emotions? cognitive energy? Whatever it is you trade it for a access to Surges the common thing here is that it needs to be a trade with a greater being, one made of fragments of god in the case of spren and in the case of aethers... weeell I don't know (maybe I will after I read Aether of Night?) but It's been implied that the aethers are big players in the cosmere, if not on the scale of shards. So, in that sense a returned being a cognitive shadow like Kel AND a slinter of a shard, I don't see why not.
Though question The WoB about Kel bonding. Are we sure Brandon meant Kel could bond with a human as if he were a spren and not Kel could become a Knight Radiant like his fellow Cognitive shadows the Heralds?
and for that matter what's stopping a Hareld bonding a person?
and another one to arcanist more well-read than me why would a returned being of the PR change things? I figured sense aviar can do it, it wouldn't be an issue.

So I find that a lot of people think Kelsier is gonna be the definitive villain of the Cosmere, that he is a narcissistic megalomaniac and, as such, dangerous.

I don't get it. I honestly don't get it. Maybe it's because I didn't pay attention when I read Mistborn, but I genuinely don't see any reason whatsoever to think Kelsier is gonna become evil. It's not that I don't share that opinion, is that I don't understand it to begin with.

So, why is Kelsier a potential villain?

Honestly it's like this. Kelseir's arc is done, we saw it in era 1 and it was great but then secret history happened and suddenly Kel was 'alive' a sliver and entirely obsessed with power, People call it security, call it survival, call it whatever you like but if the shoe fits wear it. He wants power clearly manipulated the Lord Mistborn into making the Bands of Mourning, He bullied a formed a less than moral secret organization to rob the cosmere, possessed a corpse to try and become metalbron again and as if all of that wasn't enough, he's actively contradicting a shard on what's best for their world. so, I ask you what's next for our crew leader turned profit? They're only two reason's an author keeps a hero alive for hundreds of years.
givin all that I ask you will Kelsier survivor of Hathsin be like unbroken Talenel? Or will he be like Nale?

Despite all of that I like Kel but I just the writing on the walls and someone has to be the big bad, and Kel, Hoid and Odium are the only options.
With Odium is being held at by just the splinters of one shard and I think Hoid would hurt alot more, so if I had to pick... /shrug

    Any thoughts on white sands?

IMHO It's fine I geuss but I'm not huge on Comics and didn't like the pacing break? I geuss. It's weird to mean to break from reading a shared universe set of novels to a bunch of comics.

Welcome! Do you have a favorite character?

Never given it much thought buuut I'll throw TWO curve balls and say Vivenna (Warbreaker is my favorite cosmere book ATM) or Rysn.

  8. Chiming in to mention that there was a child in there actually sever children mention int the text. a little girl points at the Night Brigade ship, she calls it a "new star", and another kid is in the arms of Contemplation when Zellion save them near the end. I only remember this cause it was odd to. Brandon hasn't mentioned kids too often in his books but he differently did in this one.

The book implies Rebeke's mom died recently but not in the last few days, She's grieving still (you never get over that though) But she talks about her mom like that was a distant thing and even the greater good, the next one to dies, aren't acting like that's imitate until they start burning lots of fuel for all the crazy plans.

  9. Seeing as 1. spren can surely receive breaths and two breaths are mostly in the PR and spren are mostly in the CR I'd assume that their physical presence is strengthened, so Syl could more easily carry things, but I doubt much of anything would change about them unless they pulled the breaths through to the CR somehow, Incorporating that investiture into them might do some things If there's enough of it relative to the spren because of sticky Intent.

A Radiant Spren's Surge granting is based off of oaths and the nahel bond so I doubt them holding breaths would have any effect. But if the knight had enough they could probably power their abilities through breath.

God Metals are such a shaky place for theorizing. They seem to have such wide and varied qualities that I would be tempted classify them as a soft magic system.

Shardmetals are soft magic, given we don’t know the rules for them as readers which by definition makes them a soft magic system.
but I don't think they're all THAT complex. Just take Bavadinium for example; Most of its "extra" effects are just extensions of the metal’s base effect to repeal investiture. Harmonium splitting? is it pushing the improperly fused investiture of P & R apart at different rates to make the base metals. Concealing Hemalurgic constructs? Repealing other shard’s investiture from the pierced being there by blocking the influence and detection.

To start a conversation, I'm running a Mistborn Adventure Game campaign set in Elendel decades after Mistborn Era 2. In my cannon, there was a war between the Northern and Southern Scadrians a la World War 1/2. In the aftermath of the war Elendel has developed noir vibes with a thriving underground made up of different organized crime families. Two of the players are twinborn private detectives (A-Bronze/F-Nicrosil and A-Tin/F-Gold) and the other is very intelligent heiress who has hired them to find an artifact stolen from her. Beyond this general summary I don't have a ton of details laid out so I'd welcome any discussion and/or speculation!

Man I'm jealous! I tried to get one of these off the ground a little while back, and just couldn't get the players. Though a Highlight for me was two potinal players wanting to play Terrispeople and my Good friend making a Terris hating Nobleman.

  12. Hello fellow Fandersons? (That's what I'm supposed to call us right?) I am Sophrosyne! I'm not completely new here I've lurked most of the year and really love some of the theories coming out of here and want to be a part of it!

So back in Feb. of this year(2023) I got moved to nights at my work and suddenly found myself with ALOT of free time. So on a whim I decided to finally read Mistborn. That was that, I was hooked. I quickly enough started reading EVERYTHING Cosmere and looking at the Coppermind with the absolutely wonderful time machine and carefully pointing at things here on the 17thshard. Now I'm finally caught up. I've gotta finish Edgedancer and I'll have consumed everything the Cosmere has to offer. What you all should know about me are 2 things.
    1. I'm a poster child for obsession. I love drowning myself in whatever I'm into. but something has been different about the Cosmere Maaaybe it's the fact that I just didn't run out of material for near enough to a year or maybe it's Brando slowly realizing what my writing circle has spent a decade trying to create but I THIIIINK I'm here to stay.

    2. The nature of my job means that for the foreseeable future I'll be posting in the dead of night and I'll post quickly. So hopefully I can keep tings at least a little Coherent.

  13. Actually I believe this is just how Invested healing works generally right?
So long as you really genuinely believe you whatever shape really a high enough there's hold of investiture will alter you body to match the mental perception.
    I think Yumi Spoliers?:

    Spoiler

This is exactly what happens when Yumi takes Painter's body, Her level of investiture allows her cognitive aspect to mold her new body.

But if you don't want SP3 spoilers look at the Knights Radiant regrowing limbs and having magical sex changes and critically the stated reason why they can't heal older injuries is that the person's soul thinks that's how they're supposed to be.

  14. I've had a working theory that the actual effect of Lerasiumis editing sDNA. Brandon said it overwrites sDNA.  Alloy of Law 17th Shard Q&A - Arcanum (coppermind.net)

    Spoiler

Lerasium overwrites Spiritual DNA. It can do some interesting things, and can overwrite your Spiritual DNA in different ways if you do it right. If a Surgebinder ate lerasium, he would become an Allomancer, but Brandon implied other things could be done.

But I don’t think it's a stretch to say that with enough of it to actually experiment with you could learn to actually edit sDNA on the fly. The effects of that is probably why Lares limited the amounts and LR didn’t use the last bead.

  15. Thinking about it this makes a good bit of sense. Clearly something is different about the Singers that eventually became the Fused and a nahel bond, a sentient-type spren bond that grants surges, is low hanging fruit for that difference. That might just be the plan for Dalniar as Odium’s champion If he managed to keep enough Bondsmithing to force Radiant to become Fused… very scary things follow that. But regardless of that It worries me that if this is correct every radiant Parshendi or human is in real danger should they lose their bond for whatever reason.

But it leaves a few questions in my mind.
Where did the second surge go?
Possible answer: Maybe only being one shard he can only supply one surge? I don’t lov this thought but it’s good enough I suppose.
What did Odium do to the connection?
I know that those cracks in the soul make control easier and supplying power possible think it’s also confirmed that the Fused are kinda like pseudo-Odium spren and when they are taken into another Parshendi they override their thoughts and forms but how?

Kelsier was a Shard for a little while, he would know quite well the difference in power of both Ruin and Preservation when he was Ascended in Secret History.

You have a point here if anyone would know it's Kelsier but let's remember that all parties admitted Ati had the exp advantage and the simple fact that Kelsier ISN'T wll studied means we have to consider the possibly he's wrong.

    28 minutes ago, JustQuestin2004 said:

Either way I don't think it's more Preservation that's causing the problem.

    Fair.

Though if the problems lie with Ruin then I'm curious about how this would work, could a human even survive being directly Invested by Ruin? What abilities would they gain?

Same thing with this, since Scadrians have a little more Preservation than Ruin, what would happen if they had more Ruin?

Now there's a thought. as far as a human being directly invested I'm sure we haven't seen enough to know. Elantrian's are largely unchanged but Dor is... weird. and we've not seen a Returned before they were invested so no telling.
As far as abilities I think the easy answer is something like Division surgebinding or a Ruin powered mistborn.

  17. I think Harmony is a misnomer and I doubt that’s controversial.  I feel it important to note that as far as I know the idea that Ruin is stronger than Preservation within Harmony has never been confirmed by a reliable source. Kel while awesome and smart is NOT an authority on shards.

Consider that together Leras and Ati MADE a planet. That means that when evenly matched they could create. But Leras alone could only make a vague plan and hope that humans would sort it out. That, to me, sounds much more like what Sazed managed with his sword plan. I don’t know how but I think that *Preservation* is actually stronger within Harmony (Guess Fermata would be a better name in this case)

So here's the thought. Sazed simply makes several highly invested people. They would likely need to be near to Elantrian levels, maybe greater. There are countless issues here but I think it’d be possible to even out the shards in this way whilst making Swords to defend the world.

One issue that I’m sure will be brought up is the potential for abuse but I don’t think it’s there. That amount of Preservation in someone could force them to stagnate, locking their personality into whatever it was at the moment of investment and prevent any LR situations.
