  1. Well they have to sleep after regular old murder too because of all the healing they store, but I think the duality of it is still a little funny.
  2. I've been rereading Mistborn and some of the things that steel inquisitors do make me giggle. Specifically I remember thinking it was a little funny that they had a whole celebration after converting Marsh. Mind you they were dismembering people but I just thought a bunch of these monsters rejoicing like this was funny. I also think the fact that they have to sleep so much is a bit funny. Like one guy can return from slaughtering a whole family, but then he has to go to bed because he sweepy. Uh please don't think I'm psychotic or something I just saw a bit of humor in how unapologetically evil these guys are.
  3. This is a theory that I've been coming back to for a bit now. I was thinking about how atium and its alloy have distinct properties in the metallic arts. I know all god metals shown in the series so far interact with the metallic arts, but only atium works the same as the 16 allomantic metals. That got me thinking, are there other god metals that act similarly to atium? Atium acts like a temporal metal, but both it and its alloy see into the future, which is the mark of the spiritual realm. I started thinking about these as the spiritual temporal metals, to fit with external and internal. This got me thinking, are there other god metals that could act like the spiritual component to other categories? Could the honor metal and its alloy make up a spiritual physical metal? If so, what kind of effect could it give off? Although I think this is an interesting line of thought, it does however, break the pattern of 16 pretty soundly. Despite the fact that I don't think this is that plausible, I like how Brandon's magic systems follow a set of strict rules so you can speculate possibilities like this, and I hope that sharing this idea can add to other speculations. That's all I have for my strange theory. I hope I was able to properly articulate it and that it gives you something to think about.
  4. Thank you! My comment about all metal being condensed power was something I vaguely remembered being said in a prechapter quote somewhere, and that was reinforced by the fact that shards, or at the very least Ruin, had trouble seeing metal. I'm glad to know I'm not too behind in this respect since I'm trying really hard to build up my understanding of the cosmere. It hasn't evaded me that you in particular seem to be the one who answers a lot of my questions, so I would like to take this time to thank you for that, as well as answering my question this time around.
  5. Sorry for the odd title, I'm not sure what else to call it. As I'm sure you're all aware, there are specific metals that have effects on investiture, and I don't just mean for the metallic arts. Aluminum has shown up multiple times and seems to have investiture negating powers in each appearance. allomantic metals have uses in Rosharan fabrials, and silver seems to have interactions with investiture despite the fact that it has no allomantic properties. All god metals are investiture active for obvious reasons. My question is just how much do we know about which metals interact with investiture. All metals are condensed power as described in HoA, but I don't know much about it past that. Even though I'm supposed to be up to date in the cosmere for the most part, it feels like there's still so much that I don't know. If you know anything about this, share your thoughts and whatnot, and thank you.
  6. (Sorry I don't know how to properly quote stuff) This makes a lot of sense, but I do have a problem with this theory. When David bypassed his rending, both Regalia and calamity were surprised. I say this because Regalia reacted to this as if it was completely impossible, which at this point it was believed to be impossible. The problem is that with how closely Regalia worked with Dawnslight and Calamity, I would have expected a different reaction from the two of them. Of course I think they'd still be surprised, but I don't think it would have been "I've never seen this happen before!" Kind of surprise if that makes any sense. Beyond that I really like this explanation, thank you!
  7. So I have recently reread the reckoners series, and something I can't seem to figure out is why Dawnslight wasn't evil. So we know that before calamity was defeated epics were evil because they drew upon his darkness, and to combat this you had to save someone despite your fear/weakness. I'm sure we're supposed to assume that Dawnslight faced his fear off screen or something like that, but I'm unsure how or when that was even supposed to happen. From what I can gather, Dawnslight was good from day one and he has no visible weakness. The only other character this happens with is Languish, but even Languish has a period of unaccounted time in-between the start of his epichood and his service of Lifeforce. Again I'm sure this is supposed to be some sort of mystery, but if we know when or how Dawnslight defeated the darkness I would like to know.
  8. I think this might be the right place for this... Or maybe not, who knows. Anyways, I had a really awesome idea for Stormlight archive merchandise. I was thinking about how I wanted a leatherbound copy of Rhythm of War since it's my favorite, but it's not out yet. As I was mopping I started thinking that it'd be really cool to actually have a copy of the in-universe version of the Rhythm of War, so that's my proposal. I want to buy an official copy of the Rhythm of War notebook so I can read Navani's insanity unfold in real time and I think that's something that everyone wants to be honest hehe. More seriously, I think the in-universe Rhythm of War works better as merch than the other in-universe namesakes since those are whole books and this would be more like a fancy keepsake than an actual read. So those are my thoughts on it. I don't know if there's a spot to petition merch or if this is even the right spot to talk about it but if you have any thoughts I'm free to hear them!
  9. I just finished reading secret history and I started thinking about the origin of the metallic arts. We know that the original allomancers were created from burning lerasium and that hemalurgists are created from their rituals, but as far as I'm aware there isn't a definitive origin to Feruchemy. I'm pretty sure Feruchemy is a combination of Preservation's and Ruin's investitures, think Sezed said something about this but I can't remember anything beyond him saying that it was end neutral for the power it gives. It is passed down, but if we can assume it's anything like allomancy, it was probably given to the ancestors of the terrace packmen. I can't imagine how it would have been given to them though. The first idea that came to my head was burning harmonium, but not only is that not chronologically possible, if that was the origin of Feruchemy I think it would have come up near the end of era 2 considering how much harmonium was thrown around by the end. The only logical thing I can think of is that Preservation and Ruin worked together to create it when they first created life. If we know this and I'm just unaware I'd like to be informed, but if not I'd like to hear other theories as to where Feruchemy comes from.
  10. I think this idea is counter intuitive. I see that many people have identified a connection between Lirin's wisdom and the windrunner oath's but my problem with this is the nature of windrunner's in the for place. Windrunners are used as soldiers, before and after the recreance, so for their last ideal to be about not killing seems unlikely for that alone. There is also the fact that the knights radiant were formed to fight in planetary wars, so again, moving away from fighting doesn't seem very likely. Then the final nail in the coffin for me is the fact that Kaladin's affinity for combat comes from his resonance with his order, so to me it seems like windrunners are supposed to fight. As for what the ideal could be, I've already said what I thought was possible earlier in the thread but it got shot down pretty quickly, but I still think that we can extract more information from the sky breaker's fifth ideal. The Skybreaker oaths have a theme of dedicating yourself to the law more and more, and then the final oath kind of flips this on its head by becoming the law. Maybe if we can find the inverse of the trend of the Windrunner oaths we can easier predict the fifth one.
  11. Thanks for all the answers! It appears that I will have to read arcanum unbound now that I have read Elantris. I'm glad to know that my knowledge isn't too far behind what we know as a whole. I had theorized that devotion was one of the shards on Sel, but I had convinced myself that I didn't have enough information to know that for sure. I'm really excited to learn more about the cosmere and see how things will heat up with Autonomy's conquest and Taravodium's mission to save the world from itself, so that's all from me for now!
  12. So at the time of writing this I have read a good amount of the cosmere. I'm up to date on Stormlight, Mistborn, White Sand, Warbreaker, and Elantris, but I still don't know where most of the shards are. I've looked on the wiki and it shows that we know where most of the shards are, but I've only been able to identify 6 direct appearances. Preservation and Ruin appear in Mistborn era 1. Automation appears in era 2. Then Honor, Cultivation, and Odium appear in Stormlight. The only other times I can remember more shards being named was Sazed's notes in Stormlight. I haven't seen any shards mentioned in White Sand or Warbreaker at all, but somehow according to the wiki we know the shards of those planets already??? Sorry if this is a bit of a dumb question but I'm at a complete loss as to where the other 10 shards are hiding.
  13. I didn't really mention it, but that's why I said that 4 shard was theoretically possible. Brandon said that multiple spren could bond a single person, but that it was highly unlikely. Once you take into account that political relations between the radiant spren are not always favorable, and that bonded spren seem to be particularly possessive of their radiant, it becomes practically impossible barring some sort of agreement like you mentioned. If I ever make a full character out of this I might have to steal that idea you had; I hadn't considered that before.
  14. I was thinking the 4 orders that I got from the test would work well together. Specifically I think edgedancer and windrunner have complimentary oaths, but despite the fact that those 4 orders don't contradict, the relations between those spren are not guaranteed to be positive. Inkspren and Honorspren specifically hate each other, and we don't know a lot about Mistspren relations, and I'm thinking that may be the main roadblock to making this actually happen.
  15. Thanks for the explanation! I think the thing that confused me the most was when Vin destroyed Ati. I had interpreted this as their investitures obliterating each other as if they were mathematical opposites, but with that cleared up I think I understand the interactions between shards better, so thank you!
  16. This might be the wrong place for this but I'll probably just move it if it is. First some context. Like any nerd would do, I took the knights radiant test to see which order I would get. The results showed that I matched edgedancer the most, which surprised me so I looked at the percentages to see what was the runner up when I came across another surprise. I managed to get 67% in edgedancer, windrunner, elsecaller, and truthwatcher, which I didn't know was possible. This got me thinking about a character who had sworn all 4 of those oaths at once and this is when the name 4 shard popped into my head. I did some research to see if this was possible, and apparently it's theoretically possible, but highly improbable. The idea of a heavily invested but greatly bound knight was very interesting to me and I wanted to share this sort of character concept with the rest of the forum to see what people had to say about it, so I did that. So if you have anything to say or add that would be greatly appreciated.
  17. So this has been bothering me since I reread RoW. In Mistborn ruin and Preservation are opposites, both logically and physically as they destroy each other. It makes sense that there is a shard for both preservation and ruin as they are fundamentally different and represent aspects of the cosmere. Because they are logical opposites, there investitures are also opposites. However, in RoW Navani insinuates that opposite investitures must be created. What does this mean then? Do all shards have an opposite shard or do some shards just not have an opposite? I've taken a quick look at the known shards and I can't find reasonable opposites for some of them, whether or not this is due to personal error, it doesn't look like all shards have opposite shards, but some do? If anyone knows more about this please inform me.
  18. I don't know if anyone is still thinking about this thread, but after reading a couple entries I was thinking that maybe the 5th ideal could be something like "I will define protection". Considering the Skybreaker's 5th ideal, and the fact that Kaladin has mentioned multiple times that 'what is right' is to him has me thinking that it might come up again as a point of contention in book 5. So maybe the 5th ideal is about deciding what is right and what truly counts as protecting a person, as that seems similar enough to "I will become law" at least thematically.
  19. It's probably Kaladin, I know that's the most bland answer possible but he's just so cool! Wayne is a close 2nd, but beyond that I don't think I can really form an order of favorites since I love all of Brandon's characters.
  20. Hello there, I'm not really used to being on a forum but I'll try to make the most of it while I'm here! I'm a big fan of the cosmere even though I've only read Stormlight and Mistborn. I've also read the Reckoners series, including lux. I might make art, that's a thing I sometimes do. I might write... something I don't really know what yet, I do have some ideas though. That's about it, so yeah I'm glad to be here and be able to see what other people think of the cosmere!
