  1. She closed her eyes.
  2. Her gaze fell down to the alley wall near where it touched the ground. “I spent money. Anyone could do that."
  3. She sighed. “Why me, then? Why someone who’s only good for drinking and running?"
  4. “‘Us’? There’s no us. You don’t know me."
  5. “Why?!” she asked.
  6. “I asked you what you wanted. I asked you what game you were playing. You didn’t give me a straight answer."
  7. “You don’t seem to want to share."
  8. “Which means I can’t trust you."
  9. She glared at the form on the wall. “I don’t know what you’re playing at, but I don’t trust you. No one genuinely wants to help people just to help them anymore. There’s always ulterior motives."
  10. “You go through nine years of torture and try to forget while sober."
  11. “No. I want to leave the undercity and confront my family."
  12. “I’m not talking to you or anyone else. Just leave me alone.”
  13. “You say that like you think I’m trying to hide it." The adrenaline she’d felt in her panic was fading, and she could think again. There was no use sitting out here in the alley. She rose to her feet, almost falling over once, and began walking back towards the inn door. Her fingers grazed the wall to catch herself if she fell.
  14. “What’s your game?"
  15. “I-I-“ She swallowed. “Why d-do you care."
  16. She pulled her legs in closer to herself. She knew. Hell but she knew.
  17. “Just leave me alone.” Against her better judgment, she let her pain seep into her voice.
  18. One of her hands went into a loose fist. Not in an angry way. It was more comforting than anything else.
  19. She didn’t answer. She owed answers to no one.
  20. The terror she felt was amplified and she couldn’t think straight.
  21. She forced herself to rise to her feet and she ran through the alley.
  22. Her knees didn’t have the strength to walk there. She crawled, shivering, across the floor.
  23. All logic shut off and she began to hyperventilate. Her eyes couldn’t focus. She felt sick, and felt an emptiness in her lower torso.
  24. Panic started to seep in. She tugged the door over and over, shaking aggressively when she couldn’t open it.
