  1. Rahil stood. "Quiet," he hissed. "You're making my headache worse."
  2. "Elan. Stop," Aventine whispered. "What are the charges?" the man demanded, not looking at either of them. He was studying his cuticles. "Impersonating gods and evading labor," Elan's male guard answered. At this the man looked at the two prisoners. When his eyes locked on Elan, he felt as though the man were seeing into his very soul, and every horrible thing that had ever happened to him was brought to his mind. Judging by the gasp Aventine let out when he looked at her, she was experiencing the same thing.
  3. The thoughts were still blocked by the power of the spear. Elan and Aventine were forced to their knees in front of the man on the throne.
  4. Elan and his guards were now in line with Aventine at the palace gates. Elan's male guard saluted the ones posted there, and the doors were opened. They were shoved inside. There was a telepathic communication between the three guards, and they changed directions several times on the way to the throne room.
  5. We don't want to. The voice in his head was that of the female guard. But we have no choice. We're slaves as much as them. "Them" referring to the laborers. If Elan tried to send a message back, it still wouldn't work.
  6. Aventine tried to look back at him, but her guard kicked her into looking forward again. They were near the top of the steps to the palace now.
  7. "You have no idea," the female guard muttered. "Quiet, both of you," the other one commanded. The order was accompanied with a hit on Elan's back, aggravating the wound where the spear still was. The female guard obeyed.
  8. "No." Elan wasn't able to tell, but the guard was close to cracking a smile.
  9. "Doesn't matter. It's practically hell. That's all you need to know."
  10. Horrible, she agreed. "Oh, I plan to." He launched a spear up at Elan, and it impaled his shoulder. It prevented him from using any of his abilities. Elan fell to the ground in pain. The guard signaled the other two. The female guard joined him in capturing Elan, while the third grabbed Aventine's arms and pressed them against her back. She grunted in pain. The guards began walking them to the castle.
  11. "Rahil's," the side guard answered, a small amount of contempt noticable in her voice. "Lord Rahil's. And as I said, gods are illegal. So whether you are who you claim or not, we must take you to him. You are either in violation of his Divine Law, or runaway slaves. Neither of which he will accept."
  12. "Uh, maybe we should-" one guard started. "It was not our choice, nor our place to protest." The middle guard looked at Aventine. "Hm..."
  13. That was... unexpected, she sent as the guards approached. The two outer guards looked surprised, but the middle was unfazed. "Even so, nearly all gods have been outlawed for ten years, their seats of power destroyed."
  14. Trevor shivered. After crashing into Pic's legs, he had been left on the floor in Elan's room. He could barely even move. He felt even more broken than he had ever felt before. He wanted it back, though he didn't quite know what "it" was. But he felt like it was his, and he wanted it returned to him. Part of him hoped "it" was a rat. Rats were yummy. When New Guy had attacked him, there was another voice in his head. It wasn't Tal's voice; he knew Tal's voice, and it was comforting. So were his scratches. But this other voice made him nervous. It made him think about "it", and he didn't even know what "it" was. But he tried to remember. ~~~ Rahil sat in his palace overlooking the desert. This one had already been in a position of power before he came into play. He appreciated that. He winced. The migraine had been worse a moment before, but it still didn't leave. He summoned one of his servants. "Find me a new one," he ordered. "My grip is loosening." "Yes, my lord," the servant said, then left. Rahil sighed. He'd held on to this one for too long.
  15. “Just don’t be ‘Elan’,” she said as three guards approached.
  16. Before she could answer, a voice yelled, “You two! What are you doing?” ”Egh- Act like a slave!” She hunched over and trained her eyes on her feet. Trevor crashed into Pic’s legs.
  17. “I was just escaping. But I have no clue where we are.”
  18. “I know. But it’ll be fine. Knife’s magic, in case you haven’t noticed.” She held it up and dropped it. It disappeared.
  19. They appeared somewhere in a desert. Slaves worked the ground all over. Aventine cursed and grabbed Elan’s wrist, pulling him behind a pillar.
  20. “I don’t want any of us dead. But I also don’t want you getting emotional and messing things up.” She summoned the dagger. “Stay safe,” she said to Pic. Before he could protest, she stabbed the bed and she and Elan disappeared.
  21. “I’d rather die trying than giving up.” Her eyes were determined.
  22. She pulled back. “I knew it. I knew we couldn’t trust him.” She turned to Pic. “Get down there.”
  23. She hugged him tighter, nearly crying herself. ”The Being,” she realized quietly. @Cash67
  24. “Being trusting isn’t a bad thing, Elan. Even if the person you trust abuses it.”
  25. “You shouldn’t have to go through this alone. Take it from someone who took years of abuse that way.” “No. If he deceived you into trusting him, it’s not your fault. ‘Fool me once’, right?”
