I was rewatching episode seven and, when you really pay attention, it’s obvious that this is an adventure, especially with the context of episodes five and six.
In episode five, right before the infamous intermission, Caine comments on how everyone seems to like each other’s adventures more than his. We know making adventures is his whole purpose. In the next episode, the Favorite Character Awards happens. It’s never referenced before this. Also in the episode after never being mentioned before is the Committee, who all love Caine. And in the post credit scene, we see no one voted for Caine as favorite character.
Now put yourself in Caine’s shoes for a moment. Three episodes in a row, the cast requests suggestion box adventures, and no one voted him to be their favorite character. He probably felt neglected and unappreciated.
In episode seven, Abel brings up multiple times that if they leave, Caine won’t be able to come with them. Also, part of the adventure involves getting to know Caine, and hanging out with him, taking time to appreciate him. Caine also says that he wants the players to be happy, and he wants to give them what they want.
Caine knows everyone wants to leave. When Pomni first arrived in the pilot, Jax said that they all tried to take off the headset- they all tried to leave. They just eventually gave up.
Also in the pilot, Caine said he was trying to figure out how to make an adventure involving an exit. He just didn’t know what to put on the other side.
Caine knew everyone wanted to leave, and he wanted to make an adventure everyone liked. That being said, he also wanted validation for being ignored. He must have thought that making an adventure involving an escape, but also centered around realizing Caine is cool, would make everyone happy.
It… makes sense, and even before we got to the scene with the buttons, we should have known something was up.
