  1. "You did what you could. And here I am."
  2. "I guess I shouldn't have underestimated you."
  3. Eventually, his breathing slowed down. "Thank you."
  4. He walked through it and took in the scenery, taking deep, shaky breaths.
  5. "Somewhere quiet and far away, where I can think." He put his hands to his head, looking overwhelmed.
  6. "Can you make a gateway somewhere?"
  7. "I... think I need to get somewhere quieter."
  8. "They're... already dead." "Was she?"
  9. "Are you okay, Rue?" TAAron suddenly looked very worried. "You didn't give up something to bring me back, did you?"
  10. "I thought only idiots did that," TAAron said. "I'm glad not to be an inconvenience to you."
  11. "I'm alive. That's good. Why am I alive?"
  12. "I think so. I did just die, though..."
  13. "Am I... Is this..." TAAron looked very lost.
  14. TAAron was there, currently pushing Jar Man away as he tried to put him on an examination table. "How...?"
  15. Death vanished in his own eruption of gray flames. Behind her, there was a soft white glow. "Rue?"
  16. "...Then I suppose you can try." Death actually smiled, ever so slightly. It made him look like a kindly old man. He was blasted back in a torrent of cold, gray fire. Death paid him no mind.
  17. Each time, it felt a shock of pain and was unable to touch Death.
  18. It felt the pain anyway, and still could not physically touch Death.
  19. "I must tell you that this is also a... rather impossible task for you."
  20. "I'm saying I would rather see a few mortals happy than hold on to the souls of two gods for all eternity. However, this is not an inclination that I can act upon myself."
  21. "I believe you," he finally said. "You know, I never much cared for gods. People, despite their short lives, tend to be far more interesting, everything they do far more meaningful. I've grown rather fond of them in my time, perhaps because they all, eventually, become my subjects."
  22. Death seemed to examine her for a long while.
