  1. hey guys. I've been busy recently so I haven't made it here in a while. I'd just like to say that while I am the initiator of this topic, I respect the views of all those who have made the effort to post here. My last post was poorly written. I simply wished to redirect the discussion away from religion in general. I believe those waters are ripe with the danger of unintentional offense. I meant no disrespect to either party and I can see both points of thee discussion.

Furthermore, I wish to apologize if my rash comments lead to any discomfort for those in this topic.

Also, when I originally asked the question "are keteks really "holy" as stated in the definition or just difficult to create and therefore admirable?" I was referring to within the Way of Kings.

  2. Might I comment on how ridiculous and petty it seem to be squabbling over what makes a ketek amazing rather than either:

    Appreciating it

    or

    Attempting to outdo it

In future I would appreciate you not to bring such foolishness into this topic.

  3. I think there should be some kind of differentiation between how strictly it follows the ketek form. (Sliding scale of Ketek hardness, anyone?)

    1. All the words are exactly the same.

    2. Changes in pluralization and verb tense.

    3. Swaps between the same root words (verbs vs. nouns vs. adjectives vs. adverbs; he hunts, the hunt, a hunting party could be used to switch)

    4. Small words and articles added for flow (a, an, of, the, and)

    5. Basic form is the same, though some larger words may appear unmirrored.

    6. A regular sentence.

So what truly qualifies as a ketek? I feel like the book would cut off at 2, maybe 3, though we only see two keteks and both qualify as 2. The note on keteks specifically says only verb tenses, not the same root word. I'd include 3 (I'm pretty sure my ketek is a 3) just because it lets the end of the ketek be very different from the beginning in meaning, which is cool. I don't even know if a 1 possible, and if it was, I don't know how creative or artistic you could really get. Quite a few of my favorites on here are 4s or 5s, but I definitely think that the higher keteks are impressive.

EDIT: Actually, looking back, I'd say that my ketek was a 2! Look at that! Though I do switch to possessives "stories" to "stories'" but it's the same letters so...

I think that if you are going to classify it as a true ketek, keep it 3 or above. If you state that it is your version of a ketek you can take it down to 5 if you wish.

I aggree that they can be good even if not true keteks.

    --------------

Memories of hope shattered, the dreams bitter and cold of glory fading, remembering faded glory, of cold and bitter dreams, the shattered hope of memory.

I was thinking up that one for around 40 minutes on the bus today. It has a certain poignancy to it I feel.

On another note I would like to suggest another addition to Featherwriter's criteria purely for fun - that is if the number of words is itself symmetrical (i.e. 11 words, or 22 words, 33 words etc). If someone can achieve that as well as forming a proper ketek then they are far better at it than I :D.

EDIT: Edited after Featherwriter's suggestion made me look again at the ketek and decide this time that "the shattered hope of memory" still got the message across. I had previously decided otherwise. (see Turos' quote if you want the previous version :D)

you have an amazing mind! great ketek and suggestion.

    ---------------

sorry ive been gone so long guys.

great to see so many people interested in keteks.

Wisdom, I accept your challenge. 121 word ketek coming up.

    Soon.

    Maybe.

  4. Some pretty damnation good keteks here.

I like this from Musicspren especially

    - Within the Spirit, motion halted by death - a city within a city - death halted by motion, the Spirit within

  5. I think that the Dalinar/Szeth (or the highly suspected Kaladin/Szeth) fight has to end in not-a-death. Which means

    1. Szeth won't attack. He decides not to do it. Whether to not kill, or not even make an attack, he sees the honor that these two have and doesn't take the final blow. He breaks his vow as a Truthless.

    OR

    2. Kaladin wins (unlikley but possible), but doesn't take the final blow, because he's tired of killing.

    OR

    3. Szeth can't attack. He looses his powers, whether through the little rock his owner has, or by loosing his cursed Shardblade, or something else.

    OR

    4. Someone orders Szeth not to attack. Someone get control of Szeth's rock, and commands him to not attack. This could be the King, changing his mind, or it could be a change in power.

So pretty much, with any of these, one of three things happens. One, Szeth crawls (or scurries) away in exile, whether in fear or embarassment, or as self-punishment. He may slink back to the King, but I don't think so.

Two, Szeth joins Team Dalinar/Kaladin and the Fight for Justice!

Three, Szeth joins a new team (only if someone new gets his rock)

I think there is a distinct possibility of Szeth being freed. Just my oppinion

  6. Does anyone remember when Adolin is dueling, and Dalinar is telling Elohkar and Sadeas about the Way of Kings and Elohkar starts being paranoid and tells them that he sees people with symbols? Shallan also sees symbols. Jasnah says they have something to do with natural Soulcasting. Does this mean that King Elohkar is actually good for something? Could he be a Soulcaster?

I have to agree with you. In fact, i wouldn't be surprised if book 3 or 4 was focussed on Elohkar.
